For most Israelis, "personal computer" is synonymous with "Windows". That's understandable, but unfortunate. Microsoft, of course, has invested significantly in Israel, offering versions in Hebrew as a matter of course. And with an extensive Windows ecosystem, there are opportunities galore, and many fortunes have been made from that foundation. And Windows systems are relatively cheap (but you get what you pay for.) Devir, of course, is having none of this, and challenged the very practice of "bundling" that brought Microsoft its predominance. I say good for him. I worked as a computer specialist for years, working with UNIX, Linux, Mac, and every version of Windows going back to the beginning. Over time I've developed a low opinion of Windows and the company behind it, but prefer Mac over Linux as the more viable alternative. Just be aware that your country's enemies know Israel is a "Windows shop", and are developing cyber strategies that will target those systems.
3. UMMM why are you showing a Mac pic
Elokim ,   Israel   (12.04.08)
If this article is about Dell and MS...then why are you showing a Mac that runs OS X? The iBook shown in the middle of this article could be looked at and defamation of character on the part of YNET. If Apple's legal dept saw this I'm sure they'd be all over YNET to put up a crappy PC/Dell pic immediately. As #2 says...'one israeli who refused to drink the Kool-Aid' I can attest that Macs are the better of the three main OS's and Windows is only dominate in this jewish land because of it's $...both investing and cheap crap they put out. Anyway...once you go Mac you won't go back!!! Drink Apple juice instead of Kool-Aid..it's better for ya!!!
4. Bad for him...and us
Eyal ,   Rehovot   (12.04.08)
By settling out of court, Devir allowed Dell to get away without setting a legal precedent. Which means that this doesn't settle any legal question of culpability, and Dell now can still fight the next time and will have this experience under their belt to learn from. Devir should have taken them all the way through the court system, and set a precedent.
5. Response to Eyal
DavidE   (12.04.08)
And you were going to help him pay for this legal challenge. Look, this sets a precedent. Maybe its good for Dell and the pc business if customers can get out from having to use Microsoft.
6. Excellent
Drake Justice ,   Anderson, USA   (12.04.08)
This gives me hope for the public to control distributors microsoft pre-shipping.
7. Eyal-its enough that you and I found out about Dell's 'tude
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (12.04.08)
These are hard times for Dell to behave in such an insensitive way toward's its customer. To have bad press on service performance is devastating for sales. I for one own 2 dells, but after hearing this, I wont buy anymore. Hope the 137.00 was worth it. If you cant get them to listen to you on a brand new product. How are they going to behave when you have a real problem.
8. Windows or not
micil   (12.04.08)
I have seen Dell laptops advertised here in Israel with FreeDos installed ie, no OS. maybe dell forgot they have a SKU like that.
9. Microsux
Petra ,   usa   (12.05.08)
Good for him there is no feedom form Microsux unless you sue. They are a corrupted monopoly. I'm thrilled that the EU sued and won over a billion from them. They suck.
10. the stores where i live give you no choice
yahn goodey   (12.06.08)
it doesn't seem to matter who makes the computers ---they all come with windows already installed. all i want is my firefox web-browser and avg security virus protection with which to surf the web for news. i tried to delete windows explorer out of this acer computer given to us as a gift but you can't get rid of either it or the chinese acer company that keeps tabs on me everyday to see what i am looking at by means of a back door into this computer.
11. Dell Computer
Kim~ ,   Philadelphia   (01.13.09)
For such a big company you would think that Dell would have settle that miner case. When I say miner I mean to them. Now they've lost a customer and a lot of furture customers. Dell charged me a restocking fee for a computer I returned in 3 days.
