1. Misdirected aggression
USA   (12.04.08)
I'm bewildered as to why the settlers are taking out their angst over the State's eviction laws on their neighbors. Are the neighbors also living in illegal outposts, or are they just convenient scapegoats? I don't really know the ins and outs of Israeli politics because I don't live there, but this just seems out of control.
2. Hooligans
eytan ,   NY-Jerusalem   (12.05.08)
Almost all of the settlers i have met in Hebron are a bunch of delusional extremists who think that they are above the law.
3. #1 The government calls it disputed land
jayfree ,   Israel   (12.05.08)
But not if you are an Arab. Isnt that hypocrisy? Most of the Arab housing in West bank is without planning or permits. But the government allows them to get away with it.
4. #2 That is why you have to start meeting Jewish Hebronites.
Etoile ,   Montreal, Canada   (12.05.08)
5. Israel Will Suffer
lior ,   nyc   (12.05.08)
Letting these delinquents run wild and allowing them to attack innocent people is morally and logically wrong. Talk radio in the US has already compared them to the Taliban in Pakistan.
6. 1&3
Wanda ,   Montreal   (12.05.08)
Kind of hard to obtain planning permission for buildings that were there before a foreign government was formed underneath them and deemed them illegal...
7. Settler extremist need to have patience
Galut ,   Selah   (12.05.08)
And the Goverment needs to have an even handed approach when ivestegating and handling problems of this nature ...the settlers are not above the LAW.
8. #3 Thanks for explaining, so...
USA   (12.05.08)
The settlers are just indulging in vigilante justice because the government is dysfunctional and won't enforce its laws fairly. Still, it hardly seems fair to pick on the Arab neighbors. Not to be overdramatic, but If the government doesn't fix this problem soon, this might go beyond rioting and spark a civil uprising.
9. Settlers are left with no choice...
Mark ,   New York   (12.05.08)
the israeli gov't encouraged the settlors to move and establish jewish communities in Hebron in the late 60s and 70s for political reasons. Now they want to force them from their homes for political reasons. . .the settlors are the victims
10. #3 jayfree: No need to distract from the Shame of Hebron
Realist ,   Israel   (12.05.08)
We are already beyond the point of denial and distraction.
11. Disgraceful (+ responses: #1-3)
Avinoam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (12.05.08)
The worst part is: "...and despite our plea not one police or army patrol arrived..." You cannot control the hooliganism of the settlers, but you can control the institutions created to protect people. #1 - I hope you don't take these settlers as being representative of Israelis in general. They are extremists and hooligans. I think in many cases the neighbours also live in illegal settlements, but I don't think that is the real reason why they are targeted. You are right, it is out of control. Although it's not at all simple. It's difficult to come to terms with our inability to defend ourselves against terrorism. I can understand why some may become frustrated and cling to ridiculous ideologies. #2 looks like it #3 very childish argument. they get away with it so let's throw a tantrum to get away with it too? wouldn't it be more productive to get the government to look into other illegal settlements, rather than try to get them to overlook these as well?
12. We fought and died for this land
Lion of Zion   (12.05.08)
This is Jewish soil, This land is the land of the Hebrews, this is Jewish land!! We will not allow this government or any other toi throw us out of our homes. We have already as a Jewish people been thrown out to many times, to be mrdered by Killers NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!! THIS IS OUR HOME LAND- This is not Arabia
13. Isnt it time .....
yehud ,   US   (12.05.08)
... to remove these evil settlers from the streets of Hebron once and for all ? I suggest that they be rounded up and re-located in some remote, fenced off area where they can do no harm to others. Guantanamo Bay perhaps ?
14. A thought
(12.05.08)
This is why others call us dirty jews....We must always hold ourselves to a higher standard. Do these hooligans know the damage they are causing for world Jewry right now? DO they care? The retaliation won't be against an Israeli target, wait till a synagogue explodes in South America or Australia......
15. Deja Vu - a repeat of 1929
Bernie ,   formerly of Seattle   (12.05.08)
except this time what went around came around This time the arabs were on the receiving end but they fared better! They had Jewish Police to protect them, a lot more than the Jews had in 1929
16. The title of this news item is wrong
Varda Kaplan ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (12.05.08)
The people who did this are not Jews - by definition.
17. foreign government?
Anon   (12.05.08)
And befor Israel who was the foreign gov? England. And befor England? Ottomans! And before Turkey? Mamalukes. Before them, arab armies from surrounding countries, before them? The Romans took over calledit a province and had Jewish kings rule it for 700 years-because there were always Jews there... Then it was ruled by Jews then by Alexander the Great then before him Bablonians. Before them Assyrians, before them Kind David-Jews. Before them Philistines before them Israelites and before them Canaanites as you can read in history or the bible.
18. To # 16 Varda
Ricardo Macher ,   KarneiShomron Israel   (12.05.08)
OK Varda, so what is your definition of a Jew? In order to write what you write, you for sure are well versed in Jewish religion, tradition and history! Is it so? What would define a Jew for you? A law abiding citizen, ashamed to wear external signals of his Jewish identity, trying to be circumspect so nobody will spot him and still living in a mental galuth?
19. Some compromise must be made
Petra ,   usa   (12.05.08)
This is Jewish land that has been allowed to be built by Arabs. Seems the arabs have more rights than Jews to Jewish land. THAT"S what's pissing off the 'Settlers". If they can't live where they choose, who's in charge? Didn't they buy this 'disputed' house? There seems no logical conclusion. Israel has allowed this to happen through neglect or, so it seems to me. Your next generation may fight more for what's theirs than the current 'leadership', if you can call it that.
20. Ro Ricardo
Gábor Fränkl ,   Budapest, Hungary   (12.05.08)
Ricardo, I think your mockery of Wanda fits perfectly characterization of the folks of elite Tel-Aviv and surroundings is quite correct. I believe they have nothing - no morals, no principles, no beliefs, no convictions no anything - just money probably. By the way I think the whole Sharon plain, Tel-Aviv and its 20 km surroundings is rather ugly, what's more very ugly in terms of landscape and aesthetics. Qarnei Shomron? An excellent choice! I fervently hope I won't be censored here!
21. Jews keep your animals on a leash
Zoo Keeper   (12.05.08)
If you don't want wilder animals unleashed on you. Logic 101.
22. 19 If 2000 years doesn't make it Arab 60years of illegal
lydia ,   Brisbane, Australia   (12.05.08)
occupation isn't going to make it jewish occupation isn't going to make it jewish. The settlers waited until the house was completed then they invaded, before the rightful owners could occupy it.. Why didn't they make a claim before the house was completed. Yes, even in a Jewish Court the claim that the house belongs to the settler(s) was debunked. The logical conclusion is that if they could prove ownership the Court would have said so. "Covet not thy neighbors land covet not they neighbors goods...
23. #21 - what size is your leash?
Hinda ,   SF Bay Area   (12.05.08)
If you look at the photo - it looks not like settlers but by your friendly neighborhood terrorists who do the rock throwing, the molotav cocktails tossing. Who took the photo? Or is this another Reuter's original photoshoot a la Al Jazeera?
24. Present/Future
Hinda ,   SF Bay Area   (12.05.08)
With the appeasement of the Kadima government and the parliament I wonder if Israel will be existing or will it be a footnote in history? To placate the true terrorists, Israel will once again hand over land that is not theirs to hand over. It belongs to the Israelis, the decendants of the original settlers not the Kadmah (thank you for the beating, may I have more sir) party and their ilk. Maybe Israel needs an awakening. Enough giving in!!!!
