20 Talkbacks for this article
1. "Israeli Arabs systematically discriminated against"
Leftist Moonbats ,   Get real!   (12.07.08)
hmmmmmm... let me think....do you think there could be a reason for this?! like the fact that Arabs carry out and support constant terror against Israel? Lets see these Leftists hire convicts, rapists and murderers to clean their house watch their children manage their offices. Then we will see if they are "tolerant" for real or just "all talk". I think we know the answer.
2. Hey rightists: Take the ACRI report seriously
JPS ,   Efrat   (12.07.08)
Yea, read my talkback. I really am a settler in Judea (west bank for you neanderthals out there). Israel is a democracy with a 20% minority population that is indeed discriminated against. Most of that discrimination is NOT justified. For those of us Israelis who work with Israeli Arabs, who have taken the trouble to learn some Arabic, and who don't have our heads in a dark hole, we see our fellow citizens as fellow citizens. Yes, they are very different, and yes, they know they were on the losing side in a war 60 years ago. But they also know they live in a democracy, and they are not getting their fair share of the pie. The weak among us will post stupid talkbacks and justify the discrimination. The aware among us already realize that the vast majority of Israeli Arabs are citizens who need to be empowered and shown that Israel is indeed a fair democracy. If we keep making it unfair, then why shouldn't they complain? And if some of us feel so weak that we can't afford to offer democracy to all our citizens, well, too bad, because most of us are simply more capable than that and believe in our strengths. We're not afraid of democracy like rightist moonbats.
3. Israel is not a civilized country yet.
Israeli Refugee ,   Long Island, NY   (12.07.08)
It's a third-world hovel with shopping malls, 100 years behind the US, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Worst for handicapped people in the Western world. A few weeks ago it was worst salary discrepancies between men and women in the Western world. Before that it was most overcrowded schools in the Western world. What's next?
4. immigrant
gregg ,   haifa   (12.07.08)
I m non israeli. I m immigrant. I am not arab and still I'm confrontated to a lot of discrimination in my everyday life JUST because I m not Jewish !!! Is that normal in a democracy?
5. The vast majority of people on the entire planet ...
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (12.07.08)
Only WISH they lived in a country like Israel. This isn't Paradise, that's for sure, but this sure isn't Hell either.
6. 'Israeli'-Arabs.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (12.07.08)
Left-wing groups are to blame for spreading the lies that 'Israeli'-Arabs are victims of discrimination. The Arabs of Israel spit in the well from which they drink, and are a fifth column in Israel. No economic complaints on their part can justify the calls to 'Murder the Jews!' and the like. The police has been too lenient all these years - most of the property crimes in Israel are carried out by Arabs.
7. I am a woman, immigrant......
linda   (12.07.08)
Israel is far from being perfect, but lets take a look at the rest of the world..... Ow sure, the rest of the world is far from dicrimination, apartheid and wrong right? Jews are being discrimitated all over the world, also women and black people, so pleaseeeeee do me a fever. Lets work together for a better WORLD instead of pointing the finger only at Israel Arabs dicriminate not less than others, and also white and black etc
8. #2 all you said...it doesnt matter!
Amsellem P. ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.07.08)
I work with Arabs and know Arabic. My parents are from Muslim countries. Jews have almost zero rights in Muslim countries. The Arab Muslims have it a million times better in Israel than my parents and their parents had it there! Discrimination is not good! and I am against discrimination. BUT it is understandable why people would discriminate against them: because these Muslims do not speak up against terrorism and or the support, either in private or public their "brethren (Hamas terrorists) in Aza". Silence is complacence. They have to decide which side they are on They can't have their cake and eat it too
9. Wait a minute! Apartheid State?
David ex SA ,   Israel   (12.07.08)
I would like to know how many of the people involved in this report ever went to South Africa during the abominable Apartheid period. I was born, grew up and lived there for almost 40 years and I was one thousands of Witwatersrand University Students who protested, for what it was worth, against the abominations committed by the SA Government. In short, to compare Israel to Apartheid South Africa, where about 15 to 20 million people were controlled and suppressed by a White minority of 4 million or which about 2/3 of that group actually supported Apartheid is ludicrous and stupid Arab propaganda. Israel has a majority of Jews and the Arabs and Druze minorities have full and equal rights under the law and they are represented by the elected MK's in Knesset. This right was denied to Blacks, People of Mixed Race and Asians in South Africa. There was no Freedom of Speech in Apartheid South Africa and very little opportunity for the Courts to intervene. Proof of the opposite here in Israel are the vicious statements by some Israeli Muslim leaders which would be regarded as incitement, sedition and perhaps treason in many western countries and our High Court of Justice is quite vociferous when it some to Civil and Human Rights. Regarding the "discrimination and bias" mentioned in the report, well this is human nature and exists in some form of another in every country on this planet. An excellent of racial bias was the recent US Presidential Election where some quite bluntly expressed their hatred of Blacks and even used the word "Nigger"! Regarding the treatment and bias regarding the Ethiopians and other immigrant groups, much of the criticism is justified as Aliyah (Immigration to Israel) is encouraged and the rights of immigrants are entrenched in law. It is a pity that the plight of our Holocaust Survivors was not mentioned. As for the Palestinians, they ARE NOT Israeli Citizens and are thus not entitled to the same Civil Rights that Israelis have and they are outspoken in their hatred of ISRAEL AND ITS PEOPLE and spend all their resources in trying to destroy our country and the Jewish People! They have chosen the way they wish to follow and they must bear the consequences. Regarding the "Settlers", their behavior in Hebron is certainly a disgrace. They are behaving in exactly the same way that anti-Semites in Tsarist Russia and the USSR did and must be condemned. Daniela Weiss, a person I had the utmost respect for, has allowed herself and her followers to sink to the level of Hamas. Of course, while you cannot condone the actions of the Settlers in Hebron the Arabs have bought it upon themselves due to hatred and denial of our right to exist! Let's not forget that if the Arab World had accepted our Human Rights there would never have been a Six Day War nor would there have been an "Occupation" and Jews would visit the home of our Forefathers in peace.
10. breath deeply
i ,   jerusalem   (12.07.08)
and smell the heathy dose of B. S. in every paragraph.
11. #3
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (12.07.08)
Funny you live in the United States and still dare to list Japan as an advanced country on December 7. Read some history, talk to some Chinese about Japanese civlization, and talk to some of the heros who fought the Japanese. hint: December 7, 1941
12. This reports one-sidedness is a danger.
Matt C ,   Canada   (12.07.08)
You should not talk only of human rights for others, but also human rights for Jews. Of course, Arabs should have their rights respected, but not at the expense of Jews, as this release suggests. It exclusively blames Jews for the riots in Acre, demands unlimited non-Jewish immigration to Israel (refugees, etc) and claims that the very nature of the Jewish state is racist. Effectively, if Israel where to adopt the views this report demands, Jews would have to give up their self-determination and likely accept "positive" discrimination laws to help Arabs and maybe some other groups. To be blunt, this report goes too far and ends up violating Jewish rights to advance its agenda.
13. do you people live in the same country that I do?
randi ,   Jerusalem   (12.07.08)
I live in Jerusalem, and wherever I go I see Arabs walking around freely and unafraid, spending lots of money in shops all over town. While they earn good money and walk freely in our neighborhoods, we cannot go to theirs for fear of death. 5 times a day i am disturbed by the muezin, while Jews cannot blow the shofar at the Kotel for fear of bothering them. any discrimination i see is against jews, not Arabs.
14. This applies to everybody...
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.07.08)
My mother, bless her soul, used to tell us this: Just remember that as long as you have one foot on somebody else’s neck to hold him down, you, yourself, won’t go anywhere, either.
15. Arab states are fighting discrimination
Raphael ,   Netanya   (12.07.08)
That is why Sudan, Libya, Syria are heading the UN Human Rights Commission. Remember how many Jews are civil servants in these countries? How many get access to University, army? How many can purchase properties (or even keep their family house)? Of course, they have a chance if they convert to Islam. Maybe Olmert is targeting a jobnik position in Ramallah.
16. To # 11
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.07.08)
Maybe #3 has the somewhat typical American attitude -except, of course, for the South where everybody knows that it will rise again :-) - of "That was then and this is now," especially after 67 years. I certainly was thankful for that outlook when the son of staunch Southern Baptists brought home a half-baked, excommunicated Catholic from a country where two of their relatives had been killed barely 17 years before. As if that hadn't been bad enough, it turned out that there was a Jew in the woodpile, to boot, making their grandson heaven only knows what, Sweet Jesus. So, they did the only thing that let them sleep at night: They gave me a chance which I used to convince them that to know me was to love me for which they fell hook, line and sinker :-) When I kept pointing out how idiotic it was to expect their own "Coloreds" to be happy to come home and be again sent to the back of the bus after they had been to foreign countries where they had more rights than at home and that I, a foreigner, was “more equal” than they were, the good people, though reluctantly and not too loudly, admitted that they, themselves might not be too happy with that situation and maybe, just maybe, could be talked into raising a little hell. But all of that was then and this is now. Besides, the Japanese have had and still have their revenge: Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Suzuki, etc. not to mention that sushi stuff…..
17. discrimination
Mike ,   Carmel, CA   (12.07.08)
You are right Israel is better than most countries in the world, if you are JEWISH. If not then it is Hell.
18. #11
US American ,   USA   (12.07.08)
Perhaps you should read some history. HINT: June 8, 1967 UNPROVOKED ATTACK BY ISRAEL on the USS LIBERTY
19. #15
Mike ,   California   (12.07.08)
You cannot defend discrimination by saying that others are worse. Human rights need to be improved in all countries. But we should clean our own house before pointing fingers at others.
20. maybe u should take ur head out of a dark hole
josh ,   montreal, Canada   (12.08.08)
im sorry but when u have arab israeli's who prefer to be recognized as Palestinians, when u have a minority demanding majority rights, when u have a ethnic group not only moraly supporting Hezbollah, but aiding them with logistics and intel, and strapping bombs to their chests , u must expect some sort of resentment from any countrymen with any national pride, which in israel, is the majority of them. its these actions why there *rightfully* discriminated against. and to insist that the whole country turn a blind eye to these traitorous actions is just completly ignorant. try sending your own son to war to protect your country, well your neighbor helps the enemy attack your countrymen and then come talk to me, until then i dont see any of us in any posistion to judge them
