Do'nt cheer too soon.Manu, many more Spaniards are descended from Germanic tribes (especialy the aristocrats). In fact Spain well unto the Middle Ages (and Portugal) were Germanic kingdoms (remember the Goths, Vandals).Know your history.

34. Fascinating Stuff, From A Sociology Standpoint
David H ,   Marietta Georgia   (12.11.08)
I would love to see a similar study done here in the Southwestern Part of the US, especially New Mexico. A number of conversos or anusim became conquistadors, fled Spain, and never returned. There are descendants of these people who still maintain Jewish traditions, even though they are long standing Catholics. (Google the article in the NY Times). And for the record, Columbus was NOT Jewish, his navigator however WAS. A man by the name of Creskis (probably misspelled). I worked with one of his descendants many years ago, and the family traces their ancestry back all the way. Columbus selected a Jew to navigate, because even then, we were known for linguistic abilities-we traveled and traded widely, and it was presumed that a Jew would be able to communicate with the silk traders in China and India.
35. Columbus Jewish?
benedita, Portugal   (12.16.08)
Interesting stuff, but if you look deep enough you will find that Columbus was not Italian, but the illegitimate son of a Portuguese woman & a Jewish man. His mother the daughter of a Portuguese Naval Admiral & later Governor of Madeira, where he grew up.
36. re: It is good to know.....

I think if this information is being revealed publicly after being hidden for hundreds of years, it has to be the Providence of God. It helps me personally, comprehend why I am the person that I am. I have always fought for human rights and sought truth and freedom of choice--now I understand why. There is more than DNA flowing through our physical bodies, we carry our ancestors´ spirits also. They were valiant to flee a land where they were not alowed to worship God in the way that deemed reasonable to them, and yet they met obstacles even in the new lands that they sought. Sometimes the inquisitors rode in the same ships as they. Go to the genealogy centers and look at the passengers list and it is amazing who rode in the ships in the 15th, 16th, 17, and18th centuries. Life is amazing--it is an unending journey of discovery--if you like adventure.
37. "Anussim" in Brazil
Ivo Jacome ,   Ramat Gan   (12.06.12)
The same applys to Brazil. It's believed that a great percentage of Brazilians are "Anussim". One should consult the works and research of Prof. Anita Novinsky, a world authority in the matter.
38. Portugal
Carla Marques ,   Porto, Portugal   (12.07.12)
Please be careful with your writings. Portugal was never conquered by the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabel. They only ruled Spain. After the portuguese independence in 1128, Portugal only "belonged" to Spain for a short period of 60 years, between 1580-1640, under the rule of Filipe II, Filipe III and Filipe IV.
39. #38 you are wrong
Paulo Morgado ,   Portugal   (04.18.13)
Portugal never belonged to Spain. There was no "Spain" then, Spain is a modern thing, there was several kingdom. Hispania the latin word mean ALL of the Iberian Peninsula not just what is called Spain today. And the Filipes were kings in Castille and Portugal, they held the two crowns so portugal was never under the crown of Castille.
40. #38
Paulo ,   Portugal   (05.11.13)
Not even that, Portugal was never under the crown of the so called(wrongly) Spain, the Catholic kings held the Portuguese crown as others. If Portugal was under the castillian crown then we could say they had been one country once but that never happened. On the name of SPAIN: Hispania is all the peninsula just like Iberia not only what is called today Spain, that was wrong of them to usurp this name just for themselves.
41. Portugal was never conquered by the Catholic Monarchs
Maria Simões ,   Lisbon   (12.28.16)
There is a major mistake in your text as Portugal was never conquered by the Catholic Monarchs.
