The only VIABLE solution is for Jordan to be the palestinian state as it was originaly envisioned to be by the British. Dividing tbe land based on the 1967 borders makes the arab state not viable. WATER - They have no Kineret just a few aquifers some of them will as part of any deal either go to Israel or be shared with Israel. You won't have enough water. FOOD - you will have limited crop growing land to provide for all the residents of this state now + all the arabs who will come from other parts of the arab world, Israel will try off load some of its arabs. Israel will trade large patrts of the Negev desert land for parts of the Jordan Valley. BORDER - this state will be in 2 parts conected probably by a tunnel that Israel will insist on having sovergnty over. SECURITY - the arab state will not be permited to have a miltary just a security force and coastgaurd, AIRSPACE - for the first few years at least until they can be proben trustworthy Israel will insist on sovergnty over its airspace. EXPORTS - there won't be much in the way of food to export, there is no defense industry which meas any sort of hi-tec will be limited as these things usualy develop out of defense, there is a small oil field off the coast of Gaza now controled or owned by British Gas but but its notihing special. Other than tourism there will be little else in the way of income. The idea works great in theory of 2 states living side by side in peace and happiness but when you start looking at the realiy you see its not all smiles. As for a single state that involves Israel & Judea and Samaria thats not an option either overnight Israel will become an arab majority state. There are already around 1.2 million add to that another 5 million palestinians, at least 1 million jews who came from the west for idealistc reasons of living in a jewsh state will decide I can earn more money back in the west and this isnt a jewish state anymore. Currently there are around 5 million jews so you add an extra 6.2 million arabs and you take away around 1 million jews the demogrpahics will be 6.2 - 4 in the arab favour, Arabs also generaly have more children than jews so the arab majorty will also reproduce at a faster rate to the jews. Thats not an option the Middle East doesn't need another arab state but it does need a jewish one. The only viable soilution for both sides is Jordan being the palestinian state, already most the population describe themselves as palestinians. If we have a palestinian state already why make another one that isnt vable or one that would exist ay the expense of the jewish state?

You are wrong, we are reading Ynet just to know what your coalition partners(Cairo traitors) say, we dont have another place to read.

Nili ,   Jerusalem   (01.01.09)
Thank you Mr. Basyouni for having the courage to speak out against terror. Perhaps with a few more strong men we can find a path to peace to let both Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in peace.

Look at Saddam Hussain the great hero of the palestinian cause who they all loved. Where was he found .. in a little hole in the groound with 2 kalashnikovs unwilling to martyr himself or fight the US soilders. His sons and the rest of the senior members of his cabinet either ran for it tried to get out of Iraq, or hid and only shot it out when their hiding place was discovered 1991 in Desert Storm Saddam and his cabinet hid away in nuclear bunkers while thousands of Iraqi soilders and civilians were being killed. I wonder what Haniyeh would have to say if the palestinian public asked to be a martyr? Would he have the courage he tells everybody else to havr?
35. But isn't it Egypt that allows the smuggling of weapons to
AB ,   TheRock   (01.01.09)
Gaza via tunnels? This sounds like hypocrisy to me. They have a big part in the firing of rockets and stockpiling of weaponry.

A human being ,   Detroit, MI   (01.01.09)
I would not expect anything different from those who do not learn lessons from their past (example: Lebanon); keep up the "good" work and your end and the "bassiounis" of the world will be closer.
37. signatory or not of agreement; Egypt is breaching int'l law
observer   (01.01.09)
Basyouni!, Egypt has never been a signatory of the Rafah Crossing Agreement. It was Israel, P.A. and EU who signed the agreement. Not objecting to the agreement, does not mean the Egypt endorses the agreement. So,the excuse of blocking humanitarian aid for more than two years at Rafah crossing has no basis. On the other-hand Egypt has been hindering the efforts in preventing genocide & delivery of humanitarian aid; against the "jus cogens" status which supersedes the international law. It's flagrant case of breaching the peremptory norms. The number of peremptory norms is considered limited but not exclusively catalogued. They are not listed or defined by any authoritative body, but arise out of case law and changing social and political attitudes. Generally included are prohibitions on waging aggressive war, crimes against humanity, war crimes, maritime piracy, genocide, apartheid, slavery, and torture. Israel war on Gaza is no less than a genocide against 1.5 million civilians. Had Egypt even signed the crossing agreement, it would still have been beaching the "jus cogens" law: "A treaty is void if, at the time of its conclusion, it conflicts with a peremptory norm of general international law. For the purposes of the present Convention, a peremptory norm of general international law is a norm accepted and recognized by the international community of states as a whole as a norm from which no derogation is permitted and which can be modified only by a subsequent norm of general international law having the same character." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peremptory_norm

Bandar ,   Beirut, Lebanon.   (01.01.09)
When an intelectually challenged person like Basyoni criticizes Hamas, its a sign that Hamas is doing something right. We are all for Hamas. Hamas will outlive Basooni and his poor excuse of a president Mubarak.

until Gaza is clean from the terror gang of hamas and its criminal elements... In 2006 Israel failed to do so in Lebanon with the gang of ali baba nasrallah, aka hizbollah, and now Lebanon is lost to them... Israel do not make the same mistake twice...

Ahmed ,   Palestine!   (01.01.09)
This clearly shows that the former ambassador had been into what is known brain-washed, all I can say that we the Palestinians don't need such an official like Basyouni to speak about the Palestinians whether they are from Hamas nor Fatah!
45. ultimate WMD: $$
(01.01.09)
To expect otherwise from the corrupt Arab leadership is the same as believing Israel is a democracy. Remember!! so long as we're attached to our "Coca Cola", "MacDonald", "Levi's", "Star Bucks" or "Diamonds".... we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Bandar WHEN AN INTILECTUALY CHALLENGED PERSON LIKE BASYONI CRITICIZES HAMAS, ITS A SIGN HAMAS ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. If Hamas are so clever and doing the right thing then can you please explain why thanks to their policies ot terrorism Hamastan is now a pile of rubble over 1000 people injured, 400 dead mainly Hamas and thousands homeless. Now I would have thought that even a fool could work out that these Hamas terrorist policies are not helping the citizens of Hamastan.

Egypt allows the smuggling to go on yes but what about us and our part in letting the smuggling continue? We constanty say we can't stop the smuggling we don't know where all the tunnels are etc. As soon as the government decides to carry out air strikes they know exactly where to drop their bombs with pin point precision to destroy the tunnel. If we know exactly where the tunnels are to bomb them then why don't we know where they are the rest of the time? We shouldn't expect an arab state to do what they promised to do especialy if breaking that promise hurts Israel but we expect our government to do something not to allow the tunnel network to be dug and they every now and again anounce we found a tunnel and blow up the entrance. I think our government are the hypocrites not the arabs who you expect no better from.

What did Hamas accomplish? So far 1200 Lebanese and 400 Palestinians have died because of your jihad. Was this loss of life justified? Do you think other Arab countries in the ME are naive and blind to the fact that they are next?

as an israeli who DOES CARE ABOUT THE PALESTINIANS AND DOES WANT FOR THEM TO HAVE THEIR OWN COUNTRY IN PEACE AND PROSPERITY....i think that your talkback does make a lot of sense and the jist of it is so very true. many people in the world, many nations and many races suffered many naqbahs in their history. all have been resettled, all have been integrated into other communities and all have been successful and productive oeaceful citizens of the world community. one milion jews living for centuries (even befire islam reached the middle east) have been uprooted, tortured, opressed and finally thrown out of all arab lands after the birth of israel. these one million were innocent. the arab regimes stole everything from them and kicked them out ofter centuries of torturing them, discriminating against them, repressing them, killing them and rioting against them, hanging them and finally stealing everything from them and kicking them out. these jewish refugees lost EVERYTHING and a lot lost their lives in the terror campaigns the arab mobs incited by arab governments poured on these people's heads throughout the centuries. this was the arab jewish naqbah!!!!! they ran to israel in the 50's because they were left without anything and no home. israel accepted them asap, gave them hope, gave them shelter, gave them food, gave them pride, gave them a place to call home and belong to, gave them assistance and aid and the knowledge that they are not alone, that they will be integrated into the society, given citizenship and be involved with israel and all its peoole. believe me, it was not easy for israel in the 50's to absorbe one milion people. israel has no resources then, no money and nothing. they were building the country from stones and sand and deadly malaria swamps. but, still, they didn't scream naqbah, naqbah. they settled these refugees and gave them honor, respect and a chance for a future and a good decent life. the arab regimes did the exact opposit. they used and abused the palestinians as a kalashnikov and a katyousha against israel and hoped that by making terrorists of the palestinians and by making killers out of them through starving them, putting them in poor camps, not giving them citizenships and inciting them to murder....then they can finally have a proxy war tool against israel which the arabs knew that they can never defeat in a military war. so, they chose the palestinians to kill for them. how very sad that it is not the israelis, but the arabs in middle east that have never given the palestinians a chance for a good honorable life. the blood is on arab regimes' hands, not on israel's hands. the situation on the ground today was brought about by the un accepting and encouraging yasser arafat and the plo, making them legitimate and the constant support and incitement you arabs gave the terrorist organization. you have sacrified the palestinians, your arab brothers for vengeance and hate, for a dream that can never be acheived...the destruction of israel and jews.
