1. Excellent article - many points liberals should internalize
William ,   Israel   (01.04.09)
I've said it many times in the past, liberals are the biggest racists of all times as they insist the Pals are too stupid or weak to do for themselves what others have done for themselves. As a result, it keeps them feeding off of the Intl community, the UN, and each other - a persistent "basket case" that needs help. This approach is parallel to a person creating problems in order to swoop in and be the victor - and is considered a major emotional flaw among psychologists. The Pals have been the darling victims starting from 1920 when suddenly Jews were trying to kill according to Al-Husseini (and to much surprise to Jews and Arab neighbors). Until today, those with agenda, even liberals, have hijacked them and continue to keep them from doing the basic thing - standing up for themselves and building an economy, not bombs.
2. So to get their own country,Pal must be slaves of Zionists!!
Moise   (01.04.09)
and serve their new masters. I don't think so!!!
3. shame on you
Maisa ,   Jerusalem   (01.04.09)
the unethical and immoral is to attack children, women and civilians in Gaza, to bomb universities and mosques in Gaza, just a kind reminder that 1.6 Million in Gaza lived and still live under seige for 18 months, no food , no health, no electricity and no life! Shame on Israel
4. no pity
dave s. ,   novato, ca   (01.04.09)
Pity the Germans for electing HItler? No way. The Japanese public for supporting the Tojo expansionists? No way. The arabs in Gaza for supporting the genocidist islamo-fascists? No way. There is no difference in attitude toward the three, nor should there be, logically speaking. Murdering Jews is not a legitimate foreign policy.
5. Shame on who???? (#3)
Leo King ,   Perth, Australia   (01.04.09)
Shame on Hamas for refusing to recognise Israel, stop terror attacks on Israeli civilians and accept prior agreements between Israel and the PA. These are the three conditions of the UN, Quartet and international community which Hamas refused to accept. Had they done so, they could have ended their political isolation. Instead, they continue to inflict misery on their own people. Yet, the greatest shame is on the Palestinians themselves for supporting Hamas and thus missing yet another historic opportunity for peaceful coexistence.
6. #3 Shame on who?
Murray of Montreal   (01.04.09)
Is it OK for Hamas to target women and children with missiles? In your simple mind that is perfectly fine.
7. Avi, would you please shut up
Terry ,   Chicago, IL   (01.04.09)
Need I remind you that the only reason your cancer of a state exists is because it used unabated terrorism against civilian populations using state-of-the-art weaponry from western nations to achieve its goal? Somehow, when people praise what an "oasis" Israel is, they seem to forget that this "oasis" has cost the US (and Germany) an estimated trillions in today's dollars. You are a malignant entity that has been subsidized time and time again by a corrupt oncologist. You bank off of the "Holocaust Industry" and yet criticize others for evoking pity. I guess "God's chosen people" have double-standards.
8. #7 Actually chum, take your own advice.
Australian Guy   (01.04.09)
What a ranter.Twisted, incoherent ramblings of a Jew-hater that masks his prejudice with an apparent legitimate concern for a bunch of barbaric losers whose, endless bleating has secured them massive donations that have been siphoned off to buy weapons or into the Swiss bank accounts of a few, whose professed purpose in life is to kill and maim others, calling foul when retribution is served. What a worthy cause. I think you have some *major problems* with your view of the situation. :-)
9. Not to worry, Dvir.
Cameron ,   USA   (01.04.09)
Absolutely no pity at all for the Gaza folk. Sorry at the small children being between the hammer & the anvil, but their parents bear the blame for that, and must answer to their own conscience for bringing this about.
10. #3 Shame on Israel?? Who the hell voted in hamass as their
leaders?Oh yeah,that ,   would be you! IDIOT!   (01.04.09)
11. gazans be honest
iraj   (01.04.09)
Gazans, admit it, you supported hamas, you elected them.. But they took advantage of you, stole your business, your money, and ruined your lives. It's not israel,it's hamas who ruined your lives. You could have beirut by the sea, instead you have shit. Blame hamas not israel. Gazans rise up and destroy hamas. Tell israel by e-mail where they are hiding and get your rewards. Don't be misled. Help israel or flee your homes. Hamas will kill you anyways. They are working for the shiite infidels, the shitty ahmadinejad and shite persian non arabs.
12. Pity
Enrique Bava ,   Portland, OR, USA   (01.04.09)
This I sent to Haaretz in response to an article about a group of "anarchists" blocking an IDF base in protest for the disproportionate use of force by Israel in Gaza. May those sparse souls continue to uphold the moral honesty that the overwhelming majority of the Israeli population seems to have lost. Would Israelis endure 40 years of occupation, apartheid-like conditions, dispossession of property and water rights passively? Yes, I know, that has been the lot of the Jewish people along most of recorded history so perhaps now it is the time to get even? Victims become victimizers? Please take the long view of history. In addition to that, such carnage is being perpetrated with American dollars through foreign aid and American-supplied weapons.
13. As a gay Irish Catholic I protest israel bombrgment
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (01.04.09)
my husband has lots of relatives in Gaza and we are worried. Please make peace ASAP.
14. So, this is your cause and effect analysis:
GUH   (01.04.09)
Cause: Israel bombs just about every time of infrastructure for seven days and kills 420 Palestinians in Gaza using airstrikes, artillery shellings, and other weapons. Effect: The Palestinians of Gaza will do Israel's will by deposing Hamas... and God knows who Israel will accept as the new leader and change its policy (blockade). And since they are suffering to such an extent as a result of the cause, but not carrying out the effect part, we must not have any pity for them, right? First you say, "Let's pity them: Hamas is holding them hostage," then you revert back to, "Let's not pity them, let's crush and dehumanize them." Is this truly the opinion of the state of Israel? I'm not surprised if it is, to tell you the truth.
15. #14 "GUH" (what is that?..pronounced as GOO?)
"Shoot and Cry" ,   Palliwood Studios   (01.04.09)

17. Great article my sentiments exactly
Bigtalk behind ,   Computers   (01.04.09)
To all those who sit behind their computers spewing criticism about things they know little of..u are invited to spend time in the south. No one wants to be the masters of the Palestinians we want them to be the masters of themselves, sitting around mass producing and playing action video games is not a life. If they were really striving for peace, then they would have it, they could work in Israel, egypt etc., and live their lives, but they prefer to do nothing, and take handouts. You guys have no idea what u are talking about, listening to biased TV stations, who are funded totally by Petro money. This is just another excuse for u guys to blame us for all that ails the world.
18. All of you leftist bleeding heart useful idiots here
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (01.04.09)
Listen to number 11 - Iraj.
19. Don't pity the Palestinians
Satmari, Robert ,   Australia   (01.04.09)
Most will not pity the Palestinian men and certainly not Hamas men. But I do pity their children and also their women. So should all Israeli's and Jews! What is being done to protect the children and care for them as they suffer without knowing why they are suffering?
20. Harsh Words
Ally ,   Haifa   (01.04.09)
"To pity the people of Gaza is to patronize them, in essence implying that they do not control their fate, the state of their government, or their own actions. It is to assume one of two things: Either that Gazans are too stupid to oust the cancerous Hamas presence in their midst, or that they are unable to do so. " These are harsh words, and the word fear is left out. The Hamas as we all saw came into power by force, many people don't volunteer to help them, but they do out of fear for their families. Hamas power is gained by feeding off this fear. And you can't deny that so many people are now trapped, with no where to go and hide on the strip right now. How can you not show compassion for the good people trapped in an awful situation.
21. Hamas prefers the deaths of Israelis over the lives of ...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.04.09)
Hamas prefers the deaths of Israelis over the lives of Palestinians. Hamas, the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, sees the struggle for Palestine as neither an ordinary political dispute between two contending nations (Israelis and Palestinians), nor even as a struggle for national self-determination by an indigenous population against a foreign occupier. Rather, it sees Palestine as but one battle in a worldwide holy war to prevent the fall of a part of the House of Islam to infidels. Hamas tends to prefer the deaths of Israelis over the lives of Palestinians as described at : http://xrl.us/kkxrc
22. hate and love
Chaim ,   Brooklyn, N.Y.   (01.04.09)
Those who hate us (the Jews) will always hate us (they need no excuse) and those who love us will always love us. We have to do what we have to do (to protect ourselves). Who care what all these people who hate us anyways think? If they were called to help (even) their "friends" the Hamas and the Pla's would they pack their bags and go? Have they (with their strong opinion) even sent a dollar to their "brothers" in suffering/occupation etc...? "Those who kind to the cruel will end up being cruel to the kind"
23. stop the occupation!
tom ,   toronto, canada   (01.04.09)
gaza and the west bank, under the terms of the misbegotten oslo accords, are under occupation by terrorist gangs. (yes, over 90% of arab palestinians live in areas controlled by the PA. and 100% of the PA is run by terrorists, whether they wear business suits or balaclavas.) what kind of "democracy" is it when only card-carrying terrorists are allowed to run in the "elections"? when was the last (or first) time that a non-terrorist contested a palestinian election, and lived? save the palestinians and stop the terrorist occupation now!
24. to #2: ???
tom ,   toronto, canada   (01.04.09)
so you feel that the only alternative to the hatred and violence of hamas is to be "slaves to the zionists"? in your demented mind, it is impossible to live in peace and prosperity on your own land, doing honets work, without murdering your neighbours for what they have built? you, who have built NOTHING and lived on united nations handouts for 60 years, think that this misery and hatred which you whip up for yourselves will feed you? the simple fact is that you could wish for nothing better than to be "slaves to the zionists": under israeli rule from 1967 to 1987, you could work with dignity, feed yourselves, and raise your families in peace. it's only since israel withdrew from gaza that these terrorist "heroes" of yours have destroyed your economy, and force-fed you a pack of lies and hatred. israel WAS NEVER your land, and the jews bought and built it. no matter what lies you fill your heads with, it was never yours. and it was the plo, not israel, that used your children for "martyrdom operations", and it is now hamas, and not israel, that now fights its battles from behind your women and children. you *are* slaves, to terrorism. and that is why you will either rid yourselves of hamas, or rot.
25. EXCELLENT ARTICLE

28. pity on you

you are not even a human being , pity on you as you don't understand even the world u live in, but u'll soon see.
29. Take responsibility for which leader to choose
Takashi ,   Japan   (01.04.09)
Who in the first place chose Hamas for govening Gaza? - people in Gaza. I understant that many Palestinians live under the poverty there, but do you really believe that Hamas makes any political / economical / social efforts what so ever to gain sustainabilities there? The reason why they stay as a terrorist group and cannot have international political voice is the clear fact that they do not make proper efforts to build a legitimate state, collaborating with their own people, and with their neighboring countries. Anyways, to my Japanese eyes, I don't know what Hamas wants, practically speaking - to provide better life to their people?
