No Israelis want to kill innocent children. The problem is that Hamas DOES. They want to kill Israeli children, and they want to kill their own children for the propaganda value. Instead of sending their precious children to bomb shelters when the alarm sounds, as Israelis do, they send them up to the roof! If you had to choose between your own 3-year-old or a Hamas child, which one would you choose?

After 6,000 rockets, the only reason numerous Israelis haven't been killed is because bomb shelters have been built and people take precautions. The Gov't tries to protect its citizens. The reverse of this is that while Hamas knew they were going to war by targeting Israel, they built tunnels for smuggling rockets and ammunition, but didn't built shelters for the citizens. The citizens are in the midst of the fighting with no protection, they are even put in harms way.

The seeming callousness of many of the posters here disgusts me. For obvious reasons, our leaders cannot follow the authors' plea literally: there are balances to be struck. But it is more likely that the overall balance will be struck appropriately if the message underlying the article is heard loud and clear. On the basis of the information available at this point, one cannot tell whether the balance is being struck appropriately. But I am certainly glad to live in a country where the issue can be publicly raised. And I am grateful to the authors for giving voice to the pain and horror that is felt by, among others, those (like me) who are both parents and loyal supporters of the IDF.

Israel's IDF is well aware of the risks to civilians, including children, so calls to take care not to harm them - whether by naive authors or by US Presidents - is both redundant and arrogant. If some talkbacks seem cold it is not that they don't care; they do. But they recognize that Israel is fighting an enemy whose cruelty knows no bounds, who are not beyond rigging schools with explosives, putting their own children at risk for propaganda purposes. Keret and Geffen envisage a pure, clean war in which the "innocent" are untouched. It's not possible, especially when confronting an insurgent enemy. Get over it.
