3. What ceasefire.....why do you bother declaring a ceasefire.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (01.18.09)
.....Hamas isn't going to stop firing rockets into Israel. Finish the damn job and quit worrying about world opinion. I don't hear anyone screaming for peace with the Tamil Tigers getting whacked off left and right. No one gives a rats butt. But if a Jew is involved......the fighting must end immediately. Screw the United Nations. Hamas isn't going to respect any ceasefire. Keep killing the terrorists.
4. This is truly wonderful news - Israel is showing restraint.
Henny Penny ,   Amsterdam   (01.18.09)

6. of course this will not be a long lived truce, folks
amymarkell ,   usa   (01.18.09)
because hamas has no intention of honoring anything as they could not controll themselves for more than 5 minutes. but maybe ithis silly truce idea will look good in the world's eye of opinion of us anyways....i give this thing maybe half a day....what says any of you? wanna place some bets on here? the odds are pretty good it will not last longer than 1/2 to 1 day long if at all. such nonsense. done in time for obamas inaugraural and that is all. 10. Now that you have proven your ineptitude could you please
meir elazar   (01.18.09)
step aside and let someone run the country and prosecute the war who understand the evil of the HAMAS enemy and who can finish the job properly before we suffer another major failure like Lebanon 2. Please go directly to jail. Do no Pass Go. Do not collect $200. Do not bother running in the next elections. Kadima and the three stooges can retire from Israeli politics permanently.
11. Could we send a unit of Duvdevanim to Jerusalem and wipe out
meir elazar   (01.18.09)
The three stooges and the cabinet. These incompetent idiots pose a greater threat to Israel than HAMAS, PRC, IJ, and El Aqsa combined. Please can we have elections immediately before Israel unconditionally surrenders to HAMAS.
12. What?!!
avraham ,   los angeles   (01.18.09)
Did I read the article correctly? we've met our military objectives and are now holding our fire, but Hamas may fire at the forces and the home front. Hashem yishmor!
13. Are you stupid? This will hurt us
asaf Gola ,   Sugar Land   (01.18.09)
and when the filth of Gaza continue to fire rockets as they just have and we respond... what will we say? This gimmick confuses our friends and only emboldens our enemies. we need to continue the fight to the end. Stop being children. Grow eggs!

17. A new reality
Adam Eliyahu Berkowi   (01.18.09)
A unilateral ceasefire, while the enemy promises continued fighting(See Ali Waked's article) is blatantly absurd. It doesn't exist as a concept and poses basic linguistic difficulties. Ceasefire means no shooting. Theye had to invent this term because it has never existed until now. No was has ever included a unilateral ceasefire, unless you call it by its proper name; surrneder. But as low and disgusting as it is, it comes as no surprise. This left wing government has never worked for the good of its people. All those evil fools who voted for Olmert and before that for Barak; Shame on you. You should be forbidden from voting ever again.
18. If I was a fanatic religious nut I would say thank god
Ron Morrison   (01.18.09)
This is great leadership! It is absolutely brilliant to come up with this solution; A unilateral ceasefire. No one has ever done it before. I am sure that after this beating, Hamas will give up firing missiles. And it brought all of Europe onto our side. Germany, France,UK, and Spain, historically pro-Israel, are going to make sure that Hamas doesn't smuggle any more missiles. That takes a big load off the IDF. Finally, a solution to what those idiotic settlers started by stealing land way outside of Israel and dragging us into this. This is closure on leaving Gush Katif, which was a good start. I think it is mighty fine of Egypt not to take Gaza back. They are doing thier part in bringing a 2 state solution, the only real solution for peace. I wish I could personally thank Peres for bringing this about. It is the kind of thing he would do.
19. Pathetic!
Jjayfree ,   ISrael   (01.18.09)
What a pack of sniveling cowards. What was the point of going in if they think they would achieve nothing? We need leaders with batzim! Kadima are traitors to the state!
20. Ceasefire??
Madeleine ,   Israel   (01.18.09)
While I hate the thought of seeming to give in to these b***s, I think it's quite a clever ploy. Helps get world opinion on our side - as much as it ever can be, anyway - and gives us a legitimate green light to resume hitting them when they keep on shelling us. The world can then see that it's Hamas who is the aggressor. Oh, er, will it? Doesn't skewed world thinking always make US out to be the aggressorwhatever we do? Personally I'm all for finishing off every last Hamas member and their suporters, except that's also mission impossible. I trust the IDF to do what it has to .

22. Humanity goes a long way .part 1
Takan ,   Eilat Israel   (01.18.09)
I remember watching Olmert on TV the evening before the PA elections and warning the Palestinians (As They Got To Call Themselves) against voting for Hamas, reminding them that Hamas is considered a terrorist organization in the US, EU and Israel. He spoke gravely but without any tone of hate. He sounded almost like a father warning his children against the big bad wolf. He was direct but honest. He warned them then of the grave consequences a vote for Hamas would bring upon them. History as gone by and the Palestinians (atgtcts) did vote for Hamas. Not only Olmert was right about the consequences (as the world watched Hamas clean out the Gaza strip from all Fattah activists and supporters in a barbaric way, not worth of Islam nor humanity), Olmert kept his word, and after years of restraint, he (painfully I am persuaded) took the decision to act on Hamas, even at the cost of, again, many civilian life. It might have been a dream team with Livni on the PR getting not only the right things done, but shown on global TV, and Ehud Barak, who didn't disappoint (even though too many people still compare this war to the last Lebanon War), and for who the succession to Amir Peretz was an easy one for a man of his stature and intellect. But Olmert? Ehud had nothing to gain from this. He will not even be part of the next elections. We hear a lot of bad tongues arguing all politicians are in or against this operation for political gain mostly, and it might be arguable for some of them, but why did Olmert do this? For the personal satisfaction of killing 1200 or so Palestinians (atgtcts) before leaving office like the world opinion seems to believe? I doubt it. I doubt that the same guy who talked like a father to the Palestinians (atgtcts) would today be a blood-thirsty monster? Olmert not only was right, he kept his words and showed humanity all the way. He is leaving office and terminating his political career (this operation, no matter how successful it will turn out to have been, will not save him from his political misdeeds in a civilized country like Israel) but I will always remember him as the father speaking to his children.
23. Humanity goes a long way .part2
Takan ,   Eilat IL   (01.18.09)
The Gaza operation was not a war like the Lebanon war. The Lebanon war was a war against Lebanon and not only against Hezbollah. The Gaza operation was a war on terror. A war on a gang of radical extremist brutes who took control of the people’s minds. The Palestinians (atgtcts) are blinded and brainwashed from kindergarten to adulthood by mind controlling thugs. The story of Wako, Texas, where a sect took control of hundreds of people through brainwashing sessions is very similar to the situation in Gaza, just on a smaller scale. The Palestinians are part of us and we do have to care for them. They are neither Lebanese nor Jordanians nor Egyptians, and therefore we have to stop the brainwashing so they can keep on living their life without hating us. We have to find a way to stop all those gangs dedicated to Israel’s destruction in the name of Allah. We have to go and teach their kids about our humanity, even if this means “occupy” them for another 20 or 50 years. In the end, it will be clear to them they’re no more “occupied”, but assimilated (unlike the Palestinians who tried their luck in an Arab country and will probably never be assimilated). Olmert has shown us the humanity in ourselves, and that we care for the Palestinians (atgtcts), or that we should. A father doesn’t turn his back on a tough kid; he raises him to understand better. We have to teach the Palestinians to accept us and this will take many years and many confrontations, but it has to start at the roots of their education and for the time being, occupation is the only way to control what is being taught in schools and mosques. We can only win in the long term as long as we remember why we should be doing this, for the sake of the children, theirs and ours.
24. News Wire!
Jewish Refugee ,   U.S.A.   (01.18.09)
Ceasefire in the making while Hamas is getting ready to throw a victory party. Iran is preparing another shipment of weapons for Hamas. European Union and U.N. are preparing humanitarian aid a.k.a. lift Gaza Siege by Israel, thus Israel lost the war because Hamas got what it wanted. In other developments Anti-Semitism around the world is spreading. For more please visit: http://israelactnow.blogspot.com/
25. This ceasefire is stristly for the Obama Inoguration.
(01.18.09)
26. the real pathetic reasons:
Lior ,   Israel   (01.18.09)
If Israel did not leave Gaza UN would vote again AND....... U.S would vote to condemn Israel. If Israel did not leave Gaza that shipment of arms waiting to arrive would return to U.S. If Israel did not leave Gaza U.S would cut in half $$to buy aircraft. BUT......not long range aircraft promised so we could hit Iran. -->That already was denied. The biggest reason of all: Drum roll please........ Israel is owned by a world who hates us, who Israel cares more for than her own people. The white flag has been raised. Shalit our beloved son continues left to rot due in part to Hamas and the other because this is a weak self-serving knee jerk government which needs to BE THROWN OUT!! The supposed military objective was realized. (BS!!!)
27. To #20 on the subject of world opinion
Joel ,   Israel   (01.18.09)
Get this straight please. Any world who sides with terrorists against Israel was never and will never be on our side. This is the plain and simple truth. The world wanted us to cease fire unilaterally for Hamas not for us!! The world choose Egypt who allowed thousands of weapons tunnels dug to act as supreme statesman spewing orders to Israel. The world over years of intifada's turned Israel the victims into the explicit victimizers........THE PARIAH'S OF THE WORLD. All happening I might add while genocide rages in Africa. While other certifiable atrocities happen across the world. Remember, a Jew splattered on a pizza parlor wall does not matter!!
28. No! to the truce
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.18.09)
Hamas should be beaten to the ground and, as the PLO was evacuated from Beirouth after the 1st Lebanon war, Hamas should be evacuated from the Gaza Strip to Iran, Sudan or Tunisia. That is the only chance, to be cleared from the Qassams. Consult : http://xrl.us/bechf2
29. the news
Amazed ,   Lebanon .   (01.18.09)
when the Egyptians failed to deliver a Truce to their israeli friends ..they went to Washington to get a non valid piece of Paper issued from a departing administration in 24 hours ..she asked her for a paper to show it to the Israeli Public that they achieved something in this war .... yes they bombed the hell out of us but on the ground it was a different story ...not even passed the Olive quarter in Gaza city . for the resistance ..the war just started ..
30. It will be disastrous to Israel
Daniel ,   Israel   (01.18.09)
Another half hearted job, why do you start it if you do not want to complete it? Keep the pressure on and dictate the terms. Gilad Shelit should be Within our boarders even before you start the talks.
