In what way is he deviating from standard, mainstream Islamic teaching? The answer is none at all - this is standard, mainstream Islamic teaching. It is Islam that is radical. The tone of the article suggests that Jihad is not an intrinsic teaching of Islam, that only ''radicals'' espouse this belief. This is completely false. If anyone is ''radical'' it is those Muslims who DON'T advocate Jihad. Left unsaid in this article is, of course, how the statements of this cleric are exactly the same as the statements of literally hundreds of other Islamic scholars, clerics, & spokesmen. It is also much the same rhetoric as the supposed ''moderates'' differing little in essence from groups such as Hamas or Hezbollah. But the article tries to show this cleric as perhaps an exception when in fact, he represents the generality.
