1. not Hamas
Miriam ,   Canada   (01.27.09)
so now Hamas can say: 'we didn't do it'? Either the group did it with Hamas' knowledge or Hamas is not in control, what is it going to be?
2. DON'T YOU WISH ARAFAT WAS STILL ALIVE?
Arik Silverman ,   Milwaukee USA   (01.27.09)
Of course, Arafat's death is still clouded in mystery, and many believe Israel assassinated him with poison, but he would be able to control all these people, including Hamas. "that surpasses even Hamas' positions in its opposition to Israel. " Although Arafat is no longer around, Israel has a chance with Hamas. If it screws up again, worse groups like this new one will take over.
3. There is no Al Qaeda
Wanda ,   Montreal   (01.27.09)
Al Qaeda is an invention for the US to attempt to extend RICO trial-type methods to terrorism.. it is unfortunately a false model.
4. Good for You Israel
Sally ,   Edinburgh   (01.27.09)
At last you are responding like any country in the world would do. Hamas are in control Hamas are responsible its simple. Hit them hard for every violation of the Ceasefire maybe then they will learn that violence only encourages more violence.
5. please explain
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.27.09)
Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel and extermination of the Jews. How can the "Jihad and Tawhid brigades" ideology surpass Hamas in its opposition to Israel?
6. Can someone please explain this.
John lette   (01.27.09)
Reuters reports that the attack occured near the Kisufim (sp) crossing. Why are the militants targeting soldiers near the crossings? On one hand Hamas wants the borders to be opened, and on the other, they are forcing Israel to temporarily shut it and maintain rigid controls. It doesn't make sense unless their objective is to keep the borders sealed.
7. ISRAEL SHOULD MAKE THE LEADERS OF HAMAS PAY
HAL; TRIPP ,   LA PAZ, BOLIVIA   (01.27.09)
THE HAMAS LEADER WHO HASN'T BEEN SEEN IN PUBLIC FOR WEEKS DOESN'T SLEEP WELL AT NIGHT FEARING FOR HIS LIFE , THE IDF NEVER SLEEPS.THE MURDERED ISRAELI BEDOUIN SOLDIER WILL HAVE HIS VENGEANCE THANKS TO YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN OF THE IDF, GOD BLESS THESE YOUNG SOULS, AM YISROEL CHAI
8. Bomb the Philadelphi Route in response

Arie ,   BaGolan   (01.27.09)
"Arafat's death is still clouded in mystery, and many believe Israel assassinated him with poison": It was arafat's wife from her mansion in Paris (bought with stolen pali funds) that forbade an autopsy/ Was SHE afraid the truth of his AIDs would be proven? "Although Arafat is no longer around, Israel has a chance with Hamas.": Wake up AS*- NOTHING happens in hamastan without PA/hamass knowledge. Anyone claiming otherwise is delusional or reading too much gideon levy or both (well, they are the same so...) BY THE WAY: WHAT IS YOUR REL NAME? Mahmood ibn shiite?
12. philadelphia and barak
iraj   (01.27.09)
Ehud, quit screwing around with deliberations and conferences, retake philadelphia and finished. Livni runs around with her law degree saying she signed a document with rice that impedes smuggling. She is kind of dumb. Her brotherr is voting for netanyahu who is no great shakes as well. But Likud is better than kadima with olmert. US inspection is worthless as is Egyptian. Do it yourself as shteinitz advised. And don't take forever to decide.

POPPY   (01.27.09)
HAMAS LEADERS ARE COWARDS THEY SHOULD COME OUT OF THEIR HOLES AND FIGHT LIKE MEN. ONLY COWARDS USE THEIR WOMAN AND CHILDREN AS HUMAN SHIELDS COME OUT A FIGHT AND THEN YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU WILL GET.. EVERYONE SHOULD SHOUT OUT LOUD FOR THE COWARDS TO COME OUT OF THE HOLES AND UNMASK THEMSELVES AND STAND UP AND FIGHT COWARDS COWARDS COWARDS

The name Al-Qaeda 'the base' - or as some have maintained is used as slang for 'the toilet' - is only a legal designation. The name was created by Western intelligence syndicates in order to properly recognize and prosecute terrorist organizations. What this means is that organizations that do NOT have any affiliation with one another are now seen as a giant network, if only to be rendered "understandable" by the US system of jurisprudence. That said, Al Qaeda is left neither a physical nor organizational entity: it's a chimera. More can be found in the fascinating 3 part series found on google videos... direct references found in the 3rd part: "The shadows in the cave" - I presume a nod to Plato's famed allegory? but the first 2 are important in order to understand why... The series is called "The Power of Nightmares" and I'd reckon is crucial viewing for anyone committed to making sense of the contemporary politics of power.

18. Re: #6 (John)
icanseeclearly ,   Canada   (01.28.09)
Easy to explain, my friend. Hamas wants the borders open, Israel does not. Israeli soldiers are "attacked" by "Hamas" or their "cohorts" and voila, border resealed. Israel keeps telling us that nothing happens in Gaza without Hamas approval, but yet, events that help Israeli interests, and only Israeli interests, keep happening. Kinda odd, dontcha think? When looking for the truth, always ask "Qui bono?" and the simplest answer is usually correct, no matter how loudly the culprit screams "Anti-Semite"!

21. Something is fishy here
era ,   Jlem, Israel   (01.28.09)
An Al Quaeda affiliated group supported by the Iranians? Sounds like a fairytale. Al Qaeda HATES Shiites, they have been killing their leaders in Iraq. In his last "out of some cave"-video, Zawahiri slammed both the Iranian government and the Hezbollah. I am very sure that there are some radical fractions in Gaza that even surpass Hamas in stupidity. And they may be linked to Iran OR to whatever is left of Al Qaeda. But these things don't go together. That would be like Ovadia Yosef eating a cheeseburger in public. The link between Iran and Al Qaeda is an American invention, like WMDs in Iraq or the gigantic Cave-Fortress of Tora Bora. But even the Americans (like John McCain during his election campain) had to draw back on that. Please don't hop on that train of stupidity, there are no sane passengers left onboard. What will be next? A news report saying that Saddam Hussein had a secret homosexual relationship with Khomeini? Come on guys...
22. John, #6
Elad Lending ,   Israel   (01.28.09)
It's only hard to understand because you're mistakenly assuming that HAMAS has Gazans' best interests at heart. In fact there goal is the destruction of Israel; Gaza's welfare is secondary. Anything that hurts Israel is good. The only thing that HAMAS likes more than dead Israelis is dead and suffering Palestinians, if it can be made to look like Israel is responsible, because it places Israel in a lose-lose situation.
23. GOTTA HAVE A MEET TO RESPOND..AMAZING,I'M STAYIN IN BROOKLYN

OVER HERE IN BROOKLYN NY... WE DONT WAIT WE DONT HAVE MEETINGS ACTUALLY ANYPLACE IN THE WORLD DOESNT WAIT ONLY IN ISRAEL
24. Its a question of will
Petero ,   Toronto Canada   (01.28.09)
Isnt it remarkable that Hamas can be as efficient as anything in crushing dissent amongst Fatah in Gaza but they seem unable to reign in those who share their own ideology. It is a sheer lack of will to do so. Regrettably, once again Hamas must be shown that it is in their interests to police even those groups with whom they agree. Pount the philadelphi route and dig a moat across the entire stretch of it.

We are neither related, nor chemically altered. Will you be addressing facts, or simply name calling? Turn off Fox News, buddy. Look beyond the borders of Amerika once in a while and some of life's truth may become self-evident.
27. the killings continue.
Captain Zen ,   Philipsburg, Dutch W   (01.28.09)
One country for all is the only way. Cant you see how you, Israel, make more terrorists by harming the locals? For one killed, two will rise. You will have to kill them all. What would you do when strangers came to live on your land and chased you away? What would you do???????
28. What to write?
JDT ,   Pittsburgh, USA   (01.28.09)
Perhaps I just won't write anything because any comments criticizing Israel will probably be considered as containing incitement, slander, racist slurs or inappropriate language.
29. A Simple Solution
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (01.28.09)
Destroy 20% of their tunnels for each and every breach of the ceasefire. That should work.
30. Hamas is being responsible for everything that goes on in...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.28.09)
Hamas is being responsible for everything that goes on in the Gaza area. The responsibility for the casualties among Palestinian civilians rests upon the shoulders of Hamas, which operates under cover of the civilian population while endangering it by holding bomb-making and explosive materials in its midst, Hamas is being responsible for everything that goes on in the Gaza area, for all of the casualties. Hamas is also responsible for the civilians who are not involved in the fighting, who are hurt in the course of these operations as a result of the fact that it operates from within civilian concentrations, and by planting and holding explosive charges among the civilian population as described at : http://xrl.us/bi9r6
