Visitors 'appalled' by exhibit on haredi world     Michel Dor
1. The donkey looks happy to me!
Plus he has that cool hat on... What is the big deal?
Daniel ,   San Diego, CA   (02.07.09)
2. You're shocked and surprised?
Why? You see the same personality type (obsessive/compulsive, magical, ritualistic. sado-masochistic and anal retentive) everywhere organized religion exists...they are (unfortunately) becoming more and more frequent as their breeding is state supported and protected by the military service of others. They are actually allowed to have political parties. Wake up. You'll not have a civilized society until they are made to share the same risks the same way as the other segments of your society. It is only reasonable that since they share the benefits they share the risk. I need no one "to preserve Judaism" for me. Like any other person on this planet, I can pray however and whenever I wish. Nobody has a lock on G-d's Name, address and zip code. Therefore, nobody needs them to do the talking for him/her.
Shimon ,   Cincinnati, USA   (02.07.09)
3. i agree
the donkey looks really happy and is sporting new clothes, if it were my donkey id feed it beer and get it high lol whats the problem???? there is nothing in those pics that you dont see on the news everyday.
m ,   jerusalem   (02.07.09)
4. As a photographer, I applaud him.
It isn't photos of boring everyday things that capture people, but rather a peep at the extraordinary subject or something familiar caught in a new way. I, for one, would love to see the exhibit. The quality of the shots appears excellent. I hope a book follows. Good luck and keep going.
Mea ,   Alaska and Israel   (02.07.09)
5. Kahana's Images
The images, from what i have seen, certainly fulfill Gary Winogrand's dictum, "a photograph must be more interesting than the thing photographed." Hooray for Menachem.
Bill ,   Los Angeles, USA   (02.07.09)
6. What's so shocking?
Let's see, what's so shocking 1. Haredi kids playing around a geniza drop off dumpster...nothing new. 2. Redeeming a first-born male donkey as commanded by G-d in Exodus 13:13 3. Redeeming the first-born child by giving 5 silver shekels to the cohen-priest? Even modern orthodox jews do this as commanded by G-d in Exodus 13:1-2. 4. Dipping in the mikvah (which a river can function as) before Rosh Hashanna is a very common custom among observant jews. I doubt they knew there was a camera man spying on them. Seriously, anyone who thinks these are idol worship is nothing but a complete ignoramus. Don't blame the haredim for lack of a jewish education.
A ,   Jerusalem   (02.07.09)
7. "haredim"
I think Kahana made one BIG mistake: calling Neturei Kartei "haredim"! I seriously question if they're even Jews!
bear ,   zefat   (02.07.09)
8. just another day at the game
take a snap shot of some of the hooliganisim that takes place at any Israeli soccer match and that looks normal to you? How about a what a non chareidi public park, or beach looks like after a day of R&R. I can get you the same "shocking" reaction with photos of Macahne Yehudah market on any given Friday.
motti ,   bet shemesh   (02.07.09)
9. Idol woship? Where was Rabin in photos?
Seriously, kettle calling the pot black.
Ilan ,   Ariel   (02.07.09)
10. Progressive, self righteous, hateful and stupid
This article and the visiting citizens comments show the chasm that divides Israeli society. Hate what you don't know anything about, love the enemy, they are "ethnic". Of course Neturei Karta represent in their eyes all the haredim. This is the product of Israeli secular school system for the past 3 generations.

11. Aw! Poor babies.
The illegal magic star of David mentioned in Obediah being burnt by the very magic toting Torah desecrating people who helped indoctrinate illegal magic and talismans into the tents of Jaacob. No more obvious than the Jainism hamsa and swastika once painted on syngaggue floors nor the third eye headgear of Egyptian book of the dead. Israel was hijaacked by Arab Babylon. Now it behaves as Babylon conspired. Cults torpedoing the people Israel from within with spiritually degradation and soul injuring pratices. Radical Muslims dream of this spiritual war and winning it. Chose it and you get it. Will your pagan symobls of our chosing rise over the gates of our historical hell? Swallow good from the cup of bewilderment. Friars one and all. Sages? Ha! Read your prophets on how Sage like they really were?! Oh yeah, you never really read Torah for yourself, have you? Tisk Tisk.

12. Why should it bother them?
ARen't they proud of the way they live? Why wouldn't they want it shown to the world? They always like to present their way of life as being the right one -- and now it's being shown for the world to see. What's wrong with that?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (02.08.09)
13. Avi Chai - Fooled? ripped off? or...
How is it that the Avi Chai sponsored this? They give out Jewish books to young Jews without... 14. Two questions for Shimon
Shimon, you said "You see the same personality type(obsessive/compulsive, magical, ritualistic. sado-masochistic and anal retentive) everywhere" . Were you talking about religion or Israeli Soccer fans? Also, you said "their breeding is state supported " I was just curious which type of "pest disposal" method you thought would be the most effective at getting rid of the unwanted "breeders". By the way, you can say "God" without the dash (G-d). putting in the dash is just one of those "obsessive/compulsive, magical, ritualistic. sado-masochistic and anal retentive" rituals from our old friends the moral absolutists. :)

15. haredi world
It's a shame you didn't get the pictures of all the religious soldiers defending their troops while bullets were passing over them, protecting the none religious from getting killed. This photographer while has the right to display his work has a real self hatred for himself and is obviously very proud to show it.
sherry ,   Bklyn, ny   (02.09.09)
16. Neturei Karta aren't Jewish
People who work so hard to harm the Jewish community can't be allowed to call themselves Jewish. There have been times in history where there has been a difference in opinion that is so great the larger Jewish community said Good Bye to them and they ceased to be Jewish, as in they were no longer members of our common Jewish community. Samaritans, Karaites the very early Jewish Christians....and now Neturei Karta
ben yaacov ,   herzliya   (02.09.09)
17. #16 Army service
I know that the Karaites serve in the army (studied with some in Beer Sheva) -- don't some of the Samaritans also serve? Neturei Karta, who don't ,are Jewish for every purpose in Israel -- unlike the Karaites, they didn't have to fight for the right to be considered so.
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.09.09)
18. 2 -Shimon
The neturai karta take nothing from the government. They are adamantly against taking from the Zionists and in return wish to live by their own standard of living. I don't agree with all they do, but I respect their right.
Citizen   (02.09.09)
19. 10 , you are wrong
For most of the Israelis there are Charidim , with whom we do not agree , but who have some very positive points . The netoure karta , lehavdil , don't have ANY good point , nothing . Those are two different worlds .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.09.09)
20. NK != "haredim"
There was a "Free Philistia" rally here recently on Shabbat. I saw the TV news report the following night and there were a few NK guys in the crowd. They were dressed in full Bekishe and Shtriemel regalia and carrying signs in a public square in a part of town with no eiruv. In other words, these "haredim" were violating Shabbat in public and had no shame. The NK cannot be considered Orthodox. Full! Stop!
CR ,   Boston, MA, USA   (02.09.09)
21. I have not been to the exhibit, nor seen all of the photos
...so I cannot comment on the whole feel of the collection. Photos, like words, can be taken out of context too and given the right spin/caption can send a different message than the artist may have intended. HOWEVER, given the photos chosen for the article and mention of "flag burning" (no need to say "flag burning down" - burning DOWN is only for solid structures like a house, Ynet editors), I would say that the feel of the exhibit PROBABLY follows suit, especially if Ynet, with its usual virulent anti-Haredi articles, is promoting it (ooh, controversy and Haredi-bashing all rolled into one! Let's go see it!). For the commentator who accuses Haredim or "Pagan" or "idol worship", I must say that she does need considerably more education on her Judaism. Judaism is full of ritual and symbolism, but NEVER paganism -- it has always been the pronouncer of the Shema: "Listen, Israel, the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is ONE" (worshiping G-d does NOT allow for other gods: not the worship of donkeys, bread, materialism, fame, power, etc). If the artist DID intend people to come away from the exhibit with a further distaste for Haredim, (although his quote at the end would seem to refute that) then he would have been abusing a trust -- they wouldn't have allowed the photos to be taken or welcomed him to private domains if they didn't trust him. That would be a breach of ethics.
