1. As the bottom of the article says...
Daniel Breslauer ,   Jerusalem   (02.18.09)
Even worse, images of a married woman without a head covering, on streets in a chareidi neighborhood, just 30 meters from the house of the Gavad (chief rabbi) of the Edah HaChareidis ("Edah Haredit")! (He lives on Rechov Ezrat Torah, I think it is called, in Gush 80, right next to Sderot Golda Meir, opposite the road to Sanhedria / Ramat Eshkol there.)
2. Jerusalem streets to put a face to name

JUST ANOTHER WASTE OF EVERYONES' MONEY.
3. whose name will be on the sign saying this is a waste of mon
zionist forever   (02.18.09)
How much is it going to cost to replace these signs ? Do they really think people are going to stop in the street to read the history of this person the street is named after ? Yes I sometimes wonder who these people the street is named after are but if I was busy I wouldn't stop to read the life history of the individual. Its a nice idea but if its going to be paid for by the municipality then its wasted money. Jerusalem is not a rich municiplaity in general and there is much more useful things this money can be spent on other than replacing perfectly good street signs.
4. signs
Dan ,   jerusalem   (02.18.09)
lets spend the money on fixing the roads instead. Call 106 if you feel your road has become dangerous in jerusalem and they will investigate and hopefully fix it.
5. The height of stupidity
The Alef ,   Israel   (02.18.09)
The height of stupidity comes at different heights depending on which street your at. It all depends on where the accompanying picture and infomation related to the regular street signs are placed. Some could be turned into shrines or altars, with the lamposts decorated with fancy ribbons with some candles and insence below, while others could be used for target practice or stone throwing. No doubt all will sooner or later be vandalised-what a big waste of money. Jerusalem municipality does it again. Let East Jerusalem if they want to, name their streets after bus or suicide bombers if they want to, for all the world to see. For Israel, it is not the best way to honour our dead.
6. Isn' there something better to waste our money on?
JayZ ,   Jerusalem   (02.18.09)
Jerusalem Municipality, and Mr. Barakat, Why are you investing our money on such useless things?? If i'm very interested in knowing who that person is, i would look him out on wikipedia. We worked hard to earn the money, which you are willing to waste. God knows how hard it was to save money from here and there to pay for the taxes "Arnona", which you insist on raising higher and higher. One more thing, do you think while we are driving around, we'll be able to read throughout details? Wouldn't that distract drivers, and add another reason to making accidents, and increasing traffic jams which are horrendous in jerusalem.
7. Good Luck! 0% of Jerusalem's signs are missing anyway
dr. john ,   nyc   (02.18.09)
Anyone who visits Jerusalem knows that, like a 3rd world country, there are practically no street signs. And if they exist the lettering is minuscule due to political correctness as they cram in Arabic. On top of that an eighth of a mile street can have seven or eight different names. On top of THAT the signs that have English can spell the same name 4 different ways. So now on top of the sign insanity and confusion they're putting up pictures. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT ONE!
8. street signs or finishing the light rail?
Joe ,   afula   (02.18.09)
Will tyhe city hire one guy to change all the street signs in the city as 100 managers check his work, just like the light rail project?
9. Most crooked street to be named after olmert.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (02.19.09)
10. great idea
leslie ,   australia   (02.18.09)
i think this is a great idea both for the residents of jerusalem as well as all of jerusalems diverse range of visitors and as someone said the current signage isn't too great and an upgrade would be welcome
11. Its a nice idea but......
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (02.19.09)
Its a nice idea but the money could be spent on other things for example more traffic lights, have you ever tried to cross Bazalel Street in Jerusalem opposite ACE its murder cars continue while your on the crossing.
12. can we expect the ultra orthdox to riot
avi ,   ramat gan   (02.19.09)
Surely this will give the ultra orthadox an exscuse to case a riot , or at least set fire to a few trash cans and throw stones at traffic, i mean the picture of a womans face could appear on a street name. Maybe if she wore a veil and just here eyes were showing ?
13. Lack pictures for many persons/streets, e.g. Shimon HaTzadik
Shimon ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.19.09)
In Jerusalem, we don't have any pictures of the person the street is named after in many cases. Moreover, in many areas of Jerusalem it goes against the culture living in that neighborhood to plant a tall pole with a picture of a person or an artist's rendition of a person at the top on every street corner (the religious aren't allowed to have graven images in their midst). I think it would be better not to print a mere picture, and instead write *2 different "quotes"* (one quote on each side of the street-sign) by that person where the picture would have been, because a quotation says far more than a picture (or even statistics like a date of birth, or resume of achievements) about why the person is memorialized on the street corners of the Holy City of Jerusalem. Before any new street signs are made, this is the right time to rename some of the street-names left over from the British Mandate period and the Ottoman period. I don't know why one of the main streets is still named after "King George", who was a monarch of the the British, when it could be named after Anne Frank, who's a daughter of Israel, and her "quotes" prove it! Visitors to Jerusalem learn our nature by walking through the streets.
14. How do you provide a true image of
Avraham ,   Los Angeles   (02.19.09)
David Hamelech or Shlomo Hamelech on streets named after them? Or will they be removed? How about Rehov Yaffo or streets without names of people? Will they be removed? I think they want to erase Israel's biblical connection.
15. #9 Bunnie Meyer Street
Avi ,   Ramat Gan   (02.19.09)
How about naming the street that leads out of Jeruaslem Bunnie Mayer St to signify that there are some jews who prefer to live in the holy city of Los Angeles over Jerusalem! Or traitors way maybe ?
16. get the train mess straightened out first!
mol   (02.19.09)
17. Jerusalem loves wasting money
zionist forever   (02.19.09)
THE STRINGS BRIDGE One of the most hated sights in Jerusalem today an eyesore on the horizon of an old city. THE LIGHT RAIL Thats yet to proove if its going to make any real difference or even if its going to be used if its ever finished. THE PLANNED POLITICAL COMPLEX THAT LOOKS LIKE ITS OUT OF STAR TREK There is no need for an ugly compound which will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Designed to replace the supreme court building, the Knesset and PM's residence. STREET SIGNS Who the hell wants to pay taxes to finance street signs with pictures half of which will probably end up covered in graffiti. The city has so many real needs but billions is spent on things that are either not needed or don't fit in with their suroundings.
18. What a frekin' WASTE of money!
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (02.19.09)
19. #7 - Dr. Moron....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (02.19.09)
You see, the signs are for the people who actually see them - like those of us who live here. Tell your tour guide to tell you what street you are on.
20. COMPLETE Stupidity...
Mikhail ,   Melbourne   (02.19.09)
COMPLETE Stupidity... So much for Ner Berkat improving the city! Money would be better spent on trash cans and cleaner Jerusalem campaign!
21. interactive...microchip
Steven Karmi ,   Pisa, Italy   (02.20.09)
How about placing a microchip in each sign...so that a person can download the "Jerusalem Municipality Tour" on their cell phone. Then, they can point their phone at the sign...and information about the person will appear on their screen. with musicians, also music...etc.
22. greeeeeaaaat (sarcastic)
jerusalem   (02.21.09)
A word of advice: It would be a waste of money to put them up in the arab populated towns. not to mention a waste of money. arab residents dont care about (no offense to ya'll patroitic israelis out there)these people. just give us our share of clean streets, enough schools, up to date schools, regular trash collecting days, developed places, normally working street lights just like in every other israeli town in israel. what is so hard about these simple tasks to actually get done? there are already signs, and they are enough, stop wasting money; is it that hard for people to pick up a book or surf the net for info?
