Israel mulls releasing Barghouti     Reuters
1. Kadima having a fire sale yet kadima got most mandates
I was in israel on vacation and had to leave the country after kadima got the most mandates. Kadima every day for over three years has been harming israel's security and when i saw the exit polls giving livni and kadima the most mandates i left the vacation early.

2. Will Abbas give up up on Temple Mount claims in exchange
for this gesture and to bolster Kadima chances to form a new government? We have to stop making gestures to Arabs in exchange for nothing. Everything has a price. We give you something tangible, you give us something tangible in return. It is as simple as that.
Genuine Tosefta ,   Tveria   (02.15.09)
3. Barghouti
Barghouti should sit in jail for the rest of his life. He should never see the light of day. The man is a terrorist plain and simple and hasn't shown any remorse for his actions.
jeremy ,   hula valley kibbutz   (02.15.09)
4. IF They Release Him They Violate Israeli & International Law
Let us get this straight - in order to bolster the 'moderate' terrorist faction of Fatah, Israel's VERY sick leaders are going to release a MASS Jewish murderer. On top of that, they are contemplating releasing scores of Hamas terrorists AFTER their 'mission was accomplished' in Gaza. You got that??
Adina Kutnicki ,   Israel,new olah   (02.15.09)
5. Totally psychotic!! What other country would even think....
of turning loose a serial killer like Barghouti? Would giving him a few jars full of anthrax or a few hundred bomb belts strengthen Abbas? Yes, according to this logic. Maybe Israeli and her Jews are too psychotic (or too stupid) to have our own country.
Bennie ,   Jerusalem   (02.15.09)
6. Barghouti is vile but not a threat
Normally I would like it if someone is convicted of a crime that they serve their sentence, but such a concept is a joke in Israel. That being said I do not have a problem freeing Barghouti, for a price. He will not be any worse or better than Abbas. Better someone like him than a man that will go out and fight.
David G   (02.15.09)
7. Right wing voters splitting vote has empowered kadima
If the right hadn't split the vote bibi would be the clear prime ministier and kadima wouldn't be able to get away with selling israel's security out right now. But the right voters had to split the vote all over the place even though they knew it would give livni and kadima the most mandates. How after three years did the right not unite behind bibi to defeat livni. If Bibi had the most mandates right now he could call out olmert and kadima for doing this. By sending a message to bibi the right weakened him and empowered kadima. Kadima took away the message that the public voted for them. The voters on the right are their own worst enemy. The left rallied behind livni while the right was more angry at bibi than Kadima who has hurt israel's security. Kadima is going to allow the smuggling to continue from iran to hamas and bring in long range rockets. Best of all Olmert gets to keep being prime minister because the voters on the right couldn't see the big picture. If you aren't 100 percent perfect pure the voters on the right say what is the difference between you and livni. So a mistake in demoting moshe feiglin was worth the right sending a message which results in kadima staying in power and israel's security being harmed. Thanks to the right sending bibi a message olmert and kadima can now free hundreds of hard core israelis. In the past terrorists freed by israel have come back and killed 180 israelis. But that wasn't important the right was more into that bibi wasn't better than livni because of moshe feiglin. Who cares if bibi wouldn't release these terrorists because he did what he did to feiglin we are better having livni release every terrorist. Some logic from the right.
seth ,   ashkelon israel   (02.15.09)
8. Olmert now gets to stay on because the right couldn't unite
Yeah thanks for the message you sent to bibi now in this stalemate olmert gets to stay on for months maybe. Yeah way to send bibi a message. Instead of caring about the security of israel the voters on the right were focused on getting back at bibi.
lisa ,   tel aviv israel   (02.15.09)
9. iam sorry israel , but you have got it all wrong
its not bargouti , and its not abbas , and its not arafat nor suha !!!! it is the palestinian people under the occupation who started the intifada, and it was all spontanios and without any plans , this is what happens when people are persecuted and humiliated by a foreign force , and i wouldnt nor should you be surprised if it happens again with or without all those mentioned above ....
(02.15.09)
10. You are only fooling yourselves
If Barghouti gets released at anytime it will not be attributed to anyone other than Hamas and our failure to eliminate them when we had the chance. Because of this weak government, we had to put our soldiers in harms way and did bot achieve one goal, but instead we are releasing this murderer who had five life sentences. There was no way he would've seen the light if it wasn't for Hamas. Kadima stop treating people like idiots, because you are the biggest idiots.
Ron ,   WI, USA   (02.15.09)
11. Might as well put a bulls-eye on every IDF uniform
If Israel gives up 1000 senior terrorists for one soldier, you can be sure that capturing Israelis for ransom will become the number 1 priority for evey Arab group in the ME. Please hurry up and form a new government before Olmet can do any more damage.
Josh   (02.15.09)
12. Why strengthen a corrupt and incompetent Fatah?
Egads! Why is everybody still playing the pretend game? They are pretending that Fatah could actually rule an independent Palestinian state, yet they can't even run their own organization. They're pretending that Barghoutti would "strengthen" Abbas, who is so unpopular that only the western powers and Israel see him and treat him as some real head of state - while the Palestinians themselves see him as a corrupt puppet. It's time to stop the charade of Fatah over Hamas. It's time to let Fatah die and do what we can to create new Palestinian organizations that actually want to serve the Palestinian people, and not simply line their bank accounts. Yea, it's mission impossible, but it's a better choice than letter the crooks run the show.
JPS ,   Efrat   (02.15.09)
13. Agree with #11
I was thinking the exact same thing, but also where would it stop? 1:1000 ratio is bad enough but what if they started to demand other things such as supplies or arms? How about some money? If you give in to demands just once your settings yourself up for more of the same kind of actions, thats why countries like america dont give in no matter the cost of the loss.

You, who apparently want good for the Palestinians, should hope that your prophecy is wrong. They will pay very, very dearly for an uprising. If you do not want them to live in misery, pray that they choose peace and abandon terror as a negotiating tool. Otherwise, they are destined to live forever as they do- or worse.

16. #6 David: When does a serial killer become a threat?
Barghouti has been convicted of murdering 5 people. When does a serial killer become a threat? After he murders 10? 15? 20? Or is he no threat as long as he is only murdering Jews?
Bennie ,   Jerusalem   (02.16.09)

But then again, Israel never learn Not even Kunta's declaration to destroy Israel again
Zohan ,   Tel Aviv   (02.16.09)
19. Has the govt total lost its mind?
Releasing Barghouti is a deal with Hamas will only show how powerless Fatah is. The humiliation of needing Hamas to secure his release will certainly weaken Fatah - probably fatally. The gov't is deluded if they think "Palestinian unity" will paper over such a gross insult.
TK ,   USA   (02.16.09)
20. "bolstering abbas"????
now here is anew concept we never heard before... bolstering abbas wil not bring any cal m ,not to mention peace, with the arabs any time soon.au contraire, it will show how quickly israel capitultes , and changes its mind about the murderer barghouti!
oded   (02.16.09)
21. A bad idea from the inventors of bad ideas!
Not a single 'gesture' to Abbas has improved his standing. He's still the guy that approves the sociopathic indoctrination of Arab kids via the PA's 'educational' system. He's still the guy that signs off on the PA's 'educational' television that demonizes Israel and exhorts CHILDREN to become martyrs against Israel. He's the same two-faced liar that takes American and israeli money and hands it over to Hamas. Bargouti can NEVER be released. And if Shalit turns out to be dead, which seems to be the case with all hamas's procrastination, Barghouti should be dragged out to a parking lot and run over by a tank. Any more deals like Kuntars will signify the moral defeat of Israel. And if that happens, the end of the state can't be far behind. (and Hamas and Hizbollah KNOW that.) Olmert/Bibi/Barak- in a place where there are NO MEN, BE A MAN!!! ARE THERE NO MEN IN ISRAEL??? EITHER LEAD THE COUNTRY TO VICTORY AND PEACE OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY.
David ,   Hartford USA   (02.16.09)
22. That would be one of the most immoral acts ever.
Would you release Nasrallah if you cought him? Bargouhti is the head of a terror group. He should have been put to death.

25. To Oshmar 13 NZ
Most if not all palestinians(12,000) jailed in israeli captives canps are resistance fighters against israeli occupation and suppression. Israel at any time can release and recapture any number of the occupied people. In fact all palestinian people in the occupied territories are prisoners in an open air large prison.
S Awaad ,   rafah   (02.16.09)
26. Terrorists are not entitled to the protected status of POWs.
The behavior of the terrorist organizations has two implications for the law applying to prisoners taken in Arab-Israeli conflicts. On the one hand, the organizations themselves illegally defy the laws of war by depriving Israeli POWs of their protected rights such as the right to contact Red Cross representatives and communicate with their families. On the other hand, the terrorists are not entitled to the protected status of POWs, and are subject to prosecution as war criminals. Indeed, these organizations fall under the definition of terrorist groups under such instruments as the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings, and Israel – like other states – is legally obliged to take a variety of steps to foil the terrorists’ activities and bring them to justice. 27. Barghouti
After the corrupt midgets that run Israel sent Kuntar home to a "hero's" welcome, you think releasing Barghouti is far fetched. I say, if you really wanted to prop up Abbas, why not make him Netanyahu's coalition partner! Give him the Defense portfolio. Why not also make Barghouti Foreign Minister. He does a better job for the PA from jail than Livni has ever done for Israel. The Arabs will rejoice. The Europeans will love you. Obama will kiss you. The Jews....well...the Jews....Jews, what Jews?

Be A MAN !! and come here to the battle field instead of being free in USA. We are very eager to confront you and your alikes. During the last israeli invasion we were accostomed to see how the coward soldiers use civilan peoples as ashield and how they cannot dare to leave their tanks. Most of our causualities were caused by Jet planes made in USA and the time will come when we are able to nutralise both tanks and F16......

the israeli courts found nothing on barghouti, and even if he is freed, its not like hes going anywhere and israel can always pick him up at anytime. eventually marwan barghouti will be the top diplomat for the palestinians and we will be negotiating with him because abbas is weak. sad but true.
M ,   JERUSALEM   (02.16.09)
30. Absolute rubbish! This will boost Hamass!
Releasing this monster will only boost hamass! Abass does not want him released because he knows that baghouti will replace him and join up in a coalition with Hamass. Dont believe me? Go read the PA press!
