1. shalit should not be part of the truce.
normal ,   beersheva, israel   (02.19.09)
but so does the border crossing, truce is one deal, shalit for the borders open and prisoners are another. plain and simple.
2. Egypt: wrong to tie Shalit to Gaza truce
(02.19.09)
That is if you ever want to see him again.
3. Gilad Shalit
devorah ,   jerusalem, israel   (02.19.09)
So what if it hinders ceasefire. I though Israel had the upper hand. since when is Hamas calling the shots?? Truthfully no prisoners of ours should have to be released. Giladf Shalit or nothing!!!! Hamas is the one who stands to lose not us. Personally I think we should go back in and finish the job anyway. Let Hamas have to beg to get us out of there.
4. So Egypt is our friend !!!!
Norman   (02.19.09)
5. That if you have control over youe own destiny
2nd observer ,   worldwide   (02.19.09)
which you do not. Isreal been created by the west and can not syrvive without it, 23 days and you did not accomplish any thing....
6. Egypt is wrong
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.19.09)
Hamas hinders peace by not freeing Shalit , is'nt that simple ? They want open crossings ? , they have to free Shalit .
7. Egypt has no problem
Arie ,   BaGolan   (02.19.09)
with turning Gilad Shalit into the new Ron Arad. Any Israeli administration that does not link Shalit to any deal is engaging in political suicide and will see the citizens of this State take retaliatory action unprecedented in the Jewish State
8. I am starting to Like Olmert. Why he was NOT like this befor
Asher ,   NY,USA   (02.19.09)
9. Egypt
Ricardo Macher ,   KarneiShomron-Israel   (02.19.09)
Egypt and Mubarak show their real face with this. They are no friends of Israel. They are not in war with us because that is good for their interests, but they want us out same that all the other arabs. Let's for once kick the table and explain to them that now we have changed our mind. Or it is by our terms or it is not.
10. NO shalit- NO truce .. Egypt is dreaming
scott ,   chicago   (02.19.09)
Israel made enough exchanges for living terrorists, and mistakes doing so motivated more kidnappings. Imagine what this will show the world, if Israel turns its back AGAIN on one of their warriors. Finish the Job in Gaza.... missiles keep flying.. and we are not doing anything right!
11. Boo hoo! Egypt is irate! Oh my!
David ,   Hartford USA   (02.19.09)
If the Egyptians didn't let Hamas did 1000 tunnels under their big noses and wink at the terrorists moving weaponry into Gaza, maybe someone would listen to them. But they did and the world knows Egypt's word is close to worthless. Who cares if Egypt put this deal together? It does nothing for Israel and everything for Hamas- so exactly why should Israel give a horse's patoot that Egypt is upset? Egypt, if it was an honest broker, should be demanding Hamas return Shalit before anything else is done. But it won't, It's kissing Hamas' ass while telling Israel, "trust us, we're your friend!" I will say this: if Shalit is dead, the corridor will be a flaming death trap for years to come. And if Gaza thinks the blockade is severe now, you haven't seen anything yet.
12. Maybe Gilad is in Egypt...
(02.19.09)
13. Shalit is wanted but an agreed cease fire is not needed!
redbourn ,   tel aviv   (02.19.09)
Now that Israel has got rid of the left wing wimps it can use deterrence and doesn't need to agree anything with Hamas. Hamas will simply be hit hard for every attack and will decide that the attacks are not worth making. The above was Sharon's idea but Olmert and company whistled and smiled whilst Hamas built tunnels and brought in weapons. Mike
14. DeAaling with Hamas
Nissim Elbaz ,   San Antonio   (02.19.09)
The reason we Israel is moving toward the right of the political spectrum, is precisely because of our ridicules dealing’ with Hamas as if they were a responsible government. With terrorists you don’t play, you knock out before they do it to you. Israel’s willingness to free hundreds and thousands terrorists, apparently serves nothing for Israel only to increase Hamas appetite for more demands. Israel should tell Egypt we value every soul and will not rest until Shalit is home! Freedom of Gilad Shalit, is not to be negotiated, it is a must!
15. President Mubarak !
(02.19.09)
Understand that Israel and the majority of Israelis see Shalit's return home as number one priority, NOT OPENING BORDERS FOR HAMAS ARMS SMUGGLERS !!! For us Hamas is a terrorist organization proxied by Iran and promised by you who knows what. Sorry, but this is not our deal. The moment you show that you are irate we understand you cannot deliver your promises YOU made to Hamas. We do not recognize Hamas and will not until they renounce guns and explosion and join peacefully the Fatah leaders or simply disappear and resettle in Iran or Sudan or Afganistan. So, for the time being opening the border crossings and releasing Hamas prisoners is premature.
16. Shut down the talks until Shalit is home. Period-who cares
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (02.20.09)
what th f... Egypt thinks? Let them shove their trade up their unwashed asses.
17. Negotiate
PW ,   Virginia USA   (02.20.09)
Go tell Hamas to negotiate with themselves...If they are ready to make compromises return to the table. To observer. Israel survived without western help to defeat the entire Arab world in 1948 and 1967...the truth is that the Arabs need the west to keep from being totally destroyed in a war. In economics Israel has so far passed the Arabs it's not even close...Egypt needs to look closely at who She wants to do business with...Hamas? Iran? or Israel....
18. Keep the border shut...stick to your principles.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (02.20.09)
It's called negotiating. If they can't stand the thought of not eating.....then they will come around. They chose to elect a terrorist government. Let them wallow in their decision.
19. Egypt
NYC Girl   (02.20.09)
Now that the US economy has gone down the crapper, perhaps it's time to re-think Egypt's $3 billion a year welfare payments. All we've ever gotten from them is a virulently anti-American government-controlled media...and some of the 9/11 hijackers.
20. Hope Olmert is replaced quickly
Howard Immanuelson ,   US   (02.20.09)
So Israel is going to turn loose hundreds of heavyweight prisoners for planning and executing of terror attacks in exchange for Shalit? This is totally nuts. Hopefully Olmert will be replaced before this deal is finalized so a more responsible government can do better.
21. speaking from both sides of mouth
observer   (02.20.09)
In a rare public outburst, Israeli negotiator Amos Gilad complained to Maariv that he received one set of instructions before flying to Cairo and another upon returning. Gilad implied that he received his original instructions for negotiating with Hamas from Barak, but that Olmert changed Israel’s stance later specifically to frame his defense minister. In 2008, Barak pushed for a truce with Hamas despite Olmert’s opposition. By tying the truce to the problematic prisoner exchange, Olmert subverts Barak’s rapprochement with Hamas.
22. #17 Egypt
observer   (02.20.09)
the Egyptian army almost destroyed Israel in 1948 and defeated it in 1973
23. Egypt is the real enemy...
Robert ,   italy   (02.20.09)
Egypt is responsable for not eliminate the tunnel in Rafah... Egypt is tollerating the the Hamas Egyptian connection Brotherhood Egypt are permitting the passage of arm in Gaza Egypt forbid deployment in Rafah of international observers Egypt forbid naval deploymento in front of Gaza Egyptian years of mediations with palestinian terrorist has never produce any results if not to detriment of israel interest
24. #22, observer
Michael C. ,   Los Angeles, USA   (02.20.09)
1. Almost doesn't count. 2. Egypt got its ass kicked in 1973, just like in 1948. 3. You're either high, or stupid; possibly both.
25. Stop buying Egyptian oil!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (02.20.09)
26. Make the Jews Release the thousands of Palestians Kidnapped.
RJBH ,   Methil   (02.20.09)
27. Egypt is your friend but
(02.20.09)
Egypt is not part of your government or your IDF , the Israeli leaders has no respect to their promisses , they are not to trust and Egypt is last friend you have after the USA you lose it you lose alot .... the truce will be done without shalit and Shalit will be part of the exchanging prisoners if Olmert want or if he doesn't want he has no chaoice ... and this political show he makes has no space anymore ... the wise people in Israel knows this well ... Olmert has nothing to lose anymore he almost lost everything the worst comes later ... so better for Israel to FOLLOW Egypt or ........ yes .
28. #22
PW ,   Virginia USA   (02.20.09)
The Egyptian 10th army was surrounded ...ready to be reduced, that means eliminated, the USA and Europe stepped in the talk to the Israelis to not do it....there was nothing between the IDF and Cairo... this is what you call victory? You probably think the Germans won the Battle of the Bulge because of an initial success...remember its how it ends and not just the opening phases...
29. #24, he is stupid...
Danny   (02.20.09)
30. Israel does right in this matter.
Cameron ,   USA   (02.20.09)
