1. Danny is a guy who likes hockey can't he be religious too?
Tal ,   LA and Toronto   (02.22.09)
It is funny to hear Danny described as Ultra Orthodox. Or anyone for that matter. Why does one's refusal to 'mechalel Shabbat" desecrate the Sabbath make them "ultra...... So he or I or others like Hockey, can that not be hand in hand with religion? I had a few shabbat meals with Danny in Toronto, years ago and he is a wonderful person who likes Hockey and who is religious. Should we call those playing hockey the "ultra reformists or Desecrators" Can't we get past this simplistic way of looking at the world? Israel is full of people, a beautiful rainbow,, why can't you accept this and move on without labels? Is it shocking that people who collect stamps or coins may be both religious and not? Hey get over it, people have so much in common and obviously the author has a hard time with this. Hi Danny, have fun playing!

4. Great Article
Yehosh ,   Ra'anana   (02.23.09)
Great article and there should be mover coverage of Hockey in Israel, including the league on Fridays, which currently is in the playoffs. One corrrection though, the games on thursday nights aren't just for the religous and/or Ultra-Orthodox but for anyone that wants to play hockey.
5. missing talkback

6. All players are welcome, not just religious
Paul S ,   Efrat   (02.24.09)
We actually have all flavors of people who play with us: religious, secular, immigrants and native born Israelis, men and women. Anybody looking for friendly, non-contact hockey is welcome to join us. We have native Israelis including some of the original rink rats who started playing hockey on the first rink in Kiryat Motzkin 22 years ago, and current and former members of the current national team. If you're interested, join the Yahoo group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/israelcanuckhockey/ Hockey ends with jacuzzi and/or pool for those who want, then davening Maariv followed by an optional trip to the shawarma place in Kiryat Shemona that stays open specifically for our group.
7. It's rare to read positive news in the paper.

8. not only hockey...
yair ,   jerusalem   (02.24.09)
... there's even a tackle football league in Israel! at the moment there are 5 teams: Haifa, Modi'in, Tel Aviv, and 2 in Jerusalem. games are never held on shabbat, as there are enough observant players in the league... www.ifl.co.il
9. Hockey In Israel
Ron ,   Beit Shemesh   (02.24.09)
As a regular player in the league I can say it is a huge relief to be able to play hockey here in Israel. It is my only form of exercise, and if it wasn't for hockey every couple of weeks who know what would have become of my waist line. All we need is a rink in the Mercaz and we are all set. The 3.5 hours there 2.5 hours back are killer!
10. In order to be more competitive...
shmulke ,   w coast, USA   (02.25.09)
...we need to recruit Rabbi Wayne Gretzky from the Phoenix Coyotes as player/coach.
