2. inviting the family adds to the problem not the solution
zionist forever   (03.17.09)
Whatever decision is made must be made by the cabinet based on what is or is not in Israels interests. The family would naturaly say give them the whole country if they demand ir just get our son home so bringing them in the decision making process It i isn't going to help anything but their emotions may affect the decision making but do you want to look a parent in straight in the eye and say we havn't reached an agrement. Noam Shalit would say no price is to high give away the entire country if that will get my son back. Keep emotional parents out of this.
3. Olmert is playing a dirty political Game...
Rami Abu Ghalyion ,   Tulkarem-palestine   (03.17.09)
Let me Clarify a few important points which its Unknown to alot of israelis 1:Israel was Expecting That Hamas Would agree about This Deal on basis of That the new Israeli government will not provide more than by the current government There was a feeling of satisfaction For Olmert,s government that hamas would agree about israeli demands which it means There was no real desire to Release the Kidnapped soilder and the efforts that made by the israeli delegation in Cairo its just a public Relations Campaign and trying from olmert to polish his Image in israel... Another Reason ..Kadima wants to convert file of the captured soilder to netanyahu In order to gain Partisan interests
4. It's about time they get their own medicine!
EST ,   Miami USA   (03.17.09)
Take the list of names Hamas wants released and keep them incommunicado ... without word about them, their fate or whether they have turned ... Accept Rd Cross letters with a nod and say they might or might not get the letter as their fate is in the hands of those who bomb Israel.and the casualties caused by the rockets may or may not be those on the list. As far as lawyers are concerned. if they want to see their "clients" they need to bring Shalit to the table! and @@@ the human right groups, etc., etc.
5. Time to Give HAMAS "THE ULTIMATUM"
meir elazar   (03.17.09)
Release SHALIT or we will convert Gaza to a parking lot. EVERYTHING WILL BE DESTROYED!!!!! They might understand that message and not be able to twist it into a "victory"
6. STop Visits To Hamas prisoners
Prince ,   Netanya   (03.17.09)
At least once a week busloads of Palastinians arrive fom gaza and the west bank to visit palastinians incarcerated for various terror related activities.Shalit does not receive any such privelage . Stop These Visits Immediately until the palastinians are willing to negotiate in good faith.
7. You may be right, but who are the dirty ones here?
#3 ,   Los Angeles   (03.17.09)
It may be true that Olmert thought Hamas would agree because they would get less from a Netanyahu government. But so what? Israel is already being blackmailed to exchange too many prisoners in exchange for just one. The fact that Israel doesn't just agree to whatever the Hamas scumbags demand does not make them dirty. The dirty ones are the blackmailers.
8. Rami-Please dont talk about "Dirty Game".Hamas cant think
Alan ,   SA   (03.17.09)
that because they grabbed some youngster ,they can get the whole of Israel to commit suicide . I wish I was the PM-then the only dirty game in town would be to clean the remains of Hamas off the face of the Earth! Otherwise Salaam
9. Who's idea was it to distribute Shalit letter to attendees?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (03.17.09)
Many will call me cold and callous, but I for one am sick of the emotional manipulation coming from the Shalit family and their proxies. And, yes, I've heard all the "if it was your son" and "if you weren't sitting safely outside the country" arguments; they don't wash. I was browsing the Maariv (Hebrew) site yesterday, and one would think Israel has no other pressing matter than one prisoner. Article after article covering the deal, the family's pain, the political implications, etc. For the media, this is better than Reality TV, so they're piling it on. It's not as if the country and its leaders aren't aware of the family's circumstances. Distributing that letter to Cabinet attendees was nothing less than emotional blackmail. Yaalon was right when he asked if people were ready to lose the state of Israel for one soldier. The country is losing all perspective.
10. No negotiations! There is no proof he is alive!
ROSENVALD ,   BRASIL   (03.17.09)
No red cross, put the murders palestinias in some prision bunker, until Shallit back home. Close the borders whit Gaza. Is the language that palestinians understand.
11. #5
Isa ,   Miami, USA   (03.17.09)
Finally someone who uses it's brain! The government of Israel is dumb for thinking about a deal with Hamas.. Since when can you trust terrorist organizations? Shalit isn't worth the release of terrorists.. Those terrorist will kill more people, it's not worth it. I hope the Israeli government will soon realise that. The best thing the government can say is indeed: release Shalit, or we are going to start up a new operation in Gaza, and then we will get you all. And the rest of the world won't stop the IDF. Hamas will get what it deserves, finally!
12. We are to blame for putting ourseleves
Eric.... ,   Israel...   (03.17.09)
in this situation. We should be calling the shots,Close the borders nothing comes in and nothing goes out .Arabs know how we feel about our people and how sensitive we are. They dont give a damn what happens to there people.
13. Find out how to deal with mad dogs and do it already!
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (03.17.09)
These people are not regular human beings.Haven't Israel understood it yet? Excuse me ,but I must say:the only remedy to mad dogs is to be killed in order to stop biting and contaminating healthy people. Israel MUST understand that THESE ARE NOT NORMAL,REGULAR HUMAN BEINGS!
14. Drop progressively the number of Hamas to be let free
Joe ,   Canada   (03.17.09)
Send to Hamas the message that the number of prisonners to be released will be progressively decreased the longer the negociations last. And let the Gaza population know that Hamas does not really care about its own people on orders from Iran. The IDF was able to reach the population with leaflet drops & cell phone warnings during the fighting. This can be used again to try puting internal pressure on the Hamas bosses. There not much hope in getting a deal from them in contineously ceeding ground which only results in bigger demands.
15. stop family visits for hamas tprisoners
Ari   (03.17.09)
let the hamas families start complaining in gaza. go into gaza and round up 10 or 20 random hamas people, and do that every few weeks or so. the 'price' for shalit will then include them.
16. The Tent STANDS upon
(03.17.09)
Bringing Shalit back alive. There is no deal. Israel is fed up with excuses for any sort of cushy journalism. You've been summoned. Not invited.
17. WHy isnt Olmert targetting the Hamass leadership?
freejay ,   Israel   (03.17.09)
Isnt taht the main question that should be asked? Surely that would make them release Shallits body ...without releasing any prisoners!
18. I agree with #6 and #7....
Aaron ,   SF, USA   (03.17.09)
and Israel's post-gaza war conscientious governing body could probably do no more without having the international bigots scream some form of human rights violation at them.
19. NEGOTIATE WHAT?
Arie ,   BaGolan   (03.17.09)
First, is he alive? NO ONE seems able to answer that! The Swiss ICRC doesn't care refusing to make waves with the islamonazis but demanding full access to the terrorists. Let us imagine how, if he is alive, the nazis treat him: he is tortured;he is deprived proper nutrition; he is deprived any decent standard of captivity;he has no access to the outside world;probably in a dingy hot confine crawling with roaches (must be muslims). That is how the islamonazis should be kept (including the muslim roaches and rats)
20. No visits, no parcels, no medicines to jailed terrorists!!!
Shoter Yehudi ,   Lod, Israel   (03.17.09)
Less exercises, more searches, more lockdowns, no calls of any kind. Grab more Hamasnicks as hostages. Plan military op to free Shalit.
21. So sad that Noam Schalit cares so little for others
Ariel ,   Judea   (03.17.09)
How many Jewish lives would be lost if Noam Schalit were to have his way? What about the soldiers who risked their lives to capture these two-legged animals?
22. #21-your pathetic
Ypip ,   Canada   (03.18.09)
23. #5......again
Leonard ,   LA usa   (03.18.09)
I was thinking the same thing. Give them an ultimatum and start a new offensive and clean house. When they give Shalit back then stop. When is this guy Olmert leaving?????? He seem to stay around forever. Like a pimple that keeps coming back.
24. #6 re: stopping pal visits
Malone ,   Hfx   (03.18.09)
This is what should happen, something has to be done, since nothing else is working.
25. Hamas makes high demands for a reason
William ,   Israel   (03.18.09)
Can you imagine is the spineless Israeli govt gives in to pressure and gives Hamas what they want - even the most ridiculous demands?? It will suddenly be a free for all among terrorists. They can demand anything they want and expect to get it. And Hamas will be seen as a god among terrorists. Then again, if Israel doesn't agree to their demands, Hamas has a reason to continue fighting and blaming it on Israel. It's a double-edge sword of terror on Israel. Not that Arabs value life, but if suddenly ALL visits, rights, etc. are taken from prisoners and they're thrown in some dungeon in the Negev, under 100 feet of dirt.... for sure the pressure would be on Hamas to compromise. But to Arabs - a dead Jew is always better than a live relative, so the negotiations continue.
26. #9 - Raymond - I agree full with your point
William ,   Israel   (03.18.09)
The very openness of Israeli society and their "privilege" to over-exaggerate and emotionalize everything is the very fodder terrorist use against us. Knowing how easy it is to twist heart strings in the country, they realize they don't need to kill hundreds of soldiers - just kidnap a few then launch a PR campaign telling Israelis their govt is killing these boys. I mean look at how cold and collected the Arabs are when they demand their prisoners back. They act as if they couldn't care if it were tomorrow or 20 years from now. Now, for sure the family wants them back, but those outpourings of emotion are strictly prohibited on Arab TV. Israel needs to stop being the neighborhood wuss and show a stronger face.
27. Bare Minimum
Cynthia ,   USA   (03.18.09)
Give Palestinian prisoners the absolute bare minimum. This includes women and children in custody and no family visits. Gilad Shalit has not had one single visit from the Red Cross. This is ridiculous!! Where's proof Gilad is alive? No prisoner exchange without this proof.
28. to #17
ghostq   (03.18.09)
that cause Hamas leadership act one day as the palestinians chosen leaders and in another day they act like underground movment, they cant be in both places yet they try, there is no one to talk to, the so call leadership of the palestinians don't even care for the mass palestinians in gaza as long it's serve their fanatic goals.
