1. I'm not surprised
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah   (03.26.09)
B"H I'm not surpised, this is what happens when people ignore their tradition and vote for politicians and knesset. Jews voted for HaShem at Mt. Sinai for all generations and so that's exactly what modern-day Jews should be doing too.
2. it was the opposite
Danny   (03.26.09)
people switched into Kadima to see bibi defeated and right wingers switched out of Likud.
3. What Bibi won, he has trhown away.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (03.26.09)
4. Excellent column. And here's another one
Marcella   (03.26.09)
by the same author: "Land for Peace' a fantasy. http://www.ynet.co.il/english/articles/0,7340,L-3538451,00.html No Land for Peace anymore. Just Two States. And that's exactly what the right wing Netanyahu will be pursuing. What will the right wing Likud MKs do now? Just go along with Bibi, wherever he leads them? Shameful, indeed.
5. WRONG ARTICLE
FAD EGYPT   (03.26.09)
I KNOW THAT MANY PEOPLE DISGUSTED BY APPOITMENT OF BARAK AS A DEFENSE MINISTER BUT IN ORDER TO BE FAIR IT IS NOT BIBI FAULT LOOK TO WHAT THE NATIONAL UNION AND UTJ HAVE DONE TO BIBI THE NATIONAT UNION INSISTED ON THE HOUSING AND CONSTRUCTION MINISTRY DESPITE IT WAS PROMISED TO SHAS BEFORE THE ELECTION BY BIBI BUT THE NATIONAL UNION DIDNT RESPECT THAT AND DIDNT GIVE IN TO THE LIKUD AND INSISTED MORE AND MORE BUT NO WAY IT IS PROMISED TO SHAS AND IT IS OVER THE NATIONAL UNION REFUSED MANY LIKUD OFFERS MORE OVER THEY WENT TO ADD THE JEWISH HOME IN THEIR WAR IN ORDER TO GET THEIR PREFERED MINISTRY AND THE EDUCATION MINISTRY TO THE JEWISH HOME PARTY BUT THE JEWISH HOME REFUSED THIS GAME AND ACCEPT THE LIKUD OFFER SO THE PARTY ENTERED THE COALITION ON THE OTHER HAND THE UTJ AFTER MORE THAN A WEEK ON THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN LIKUD AND LIEBERMAN THEY REMEBER THAT THEY CANT ACCEPT THE COMPROMISES ON THE CONVERSION ISSUE AND THE TALKS BETWEEN LIKUD AND THEM ENTERED A VERY DIFFICULT TIME SO WHAT CAN BIBI DO WITH THEM WASTING TIME UNTIL HE SURPRISED THAT TIME IS OVER ON 3 APRIL WHICH WILL BE NEXT FRIDAY AND THE CHANCE LOST?? SO SAID FIRST FORM A COALITION AND THEN HE CAN CONTINUE TALKS WITH THE OTHER PARTIES AFTER COALITION FORMED AND THERE IS STILL CHANCE FOR UTJ AND NU TO ENTER THE COALITION I BELIEVE THAT LABOR SHOULD GIVE UP TWO MINISTERIES DOR THE LIKUD BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT NO MORE THAN SEVEN MEMBERS WILL SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT IN THE PARTY AND THE UTJ AND NU ENTER THE GOVERNMENT SO BIBI WILL HAVE COALITION OF 27 LIKUD 15 LIEBERMAN 11 SHAS 7 LABOR 5 UTJ 4 NU AND 3 JEWISH HOME SO THE TOTAL WILL BE 72 MEMBER OF KNESSET SHALOM
6. rubbish
Doron   (03.26.09)
how does misgav know who are netanyahu's voters? those who wanted a greater israel and no negotiations (like the national union) should have read the likud platform, which specifically says that they will be "willing to negotiate with the palestinian leadership which is not compromised by terror", and that they favor a "realistic solution to the peace-process". extremists should realize that they are called extreme for a reason. i think bibi's move was brilliant, and fits with the overall goals of the likud (a realistic, sober approach without big or crazy ideologies.)
7. Is that it? Got a cigarette?
Ypip ,   Canada   (03.26.09)
8. for me once.......
warren ,   atl bch, fl   (03.26.09)
how could any israeli vote for netantahu after his first disastrous term in office? here is what israel now has to look forward to; a divided jerusalem, lost west bank, samaria, judea. the idf will soon be cut in half as govt wants to spend more on the arabs in gaza and has no where else from which to pull the money. i can understand the need to survive when you are all alone in a foreign land, but this is your home. if you won't fight for it now all is lost. iran will not wait forever. if the obama bribes are not sufficient to stall their nuclear program your nation at best has 6 months. in 6 months iran will have the 12-15 nuclear warheads whe needs to destroy the nation. you know your neighbors. you know what they will do once your defenses are destroyed. is there is any doubt they won't kill every man, woman, and child among you? how can you let this happen?
9. A deeply flawed perspective.
Bob ,   Windsor - Canada   (03.26.09)
Netanyahu didn't betray anyone by inviting labor into the coalition. It was the only way to get the Obama administration to relax a little. If anything, it gave him the breathing room he needs to implement many of the policies his voters want. Let's remember, Netanyahu didn't exactly win an overwhelmingly clear mandate, so this was a good move on his part.
10. I am a NU voter and I want a nationa unity government
Golan ,   SL   (03.26.09)
We need a national unity government because we are going into war. The world economy is headed toward a depression, and a clash of civilizations of a decadent liberal and lazy westerners on one hand and an active violent and motivated Islamic movement is descending on our heads. And for that Netenyahu needs the lefties as a fig leaf.
11. Be careful what you wish for...
Josh ,   San Jose, USA   (03.26.09)
Just imagine for a moment what a government consisting of Bibi's 65 endorsers would look like. 1. Lieberman sitting across the cabinet table with Yishai. 2. Seven different dinky parties - every one of whom has the power to being down the government the moment their demands aren't met. Many of these parties have contradictory demands. This government would have been a fiasco and would have fallen quickly. The ideological purists on the right like #1 need to realize that unless they are more united, a simple majority in the Kennesset will never be enough for them to stay in power. Bibi did what he had to do in order to govern. Given the election results, I'd love to see some of his critics do any better.
12. Perspective
Sagi ,   Israel   (03.26.09)
Bibi betrayed and defrauded those who voted for him and proposed him to the President. Barak betrayed those who voted for him and defrauded the Party delegates. That is what the author stated and I just happen to agree with him. Conclusion. With two brigands like this running the country we are in for a very rough ride. Folks, make sure your boots are firmly in the stirrups and both hands on the reins.
13. Bottom line - the country is a shambles
Talula ,   Israel   (03.26.09)
and we cannot trust ANYONE who runs for Knesset. How sad.
14. israeli politicians
sas ,   israel   (03.26.09)
i do not believe in any of them. they are all the same liars. for that reason - MY grandchildren will NOT serve in he army. I do not trust their decision making nor the actions they take. they only worry about themselves and the $$ they make. Ohlmert was the master - barak is not far behind. Mofaz is an idiot and boogie is crazy. Do you want these people to tell your children where to go when??????????? I certainly do not want to be in such a position. They also are only interested in getting back dead bodies. Live soldiers are not of any interest to them. Rabin was not willing to pay a million dollars for Ron Arad and the discussions concerning Shalit are not in place and are disgusting. I am under the impresion they want more tragic stories for memorial day and more people at the cemetaries. that's my explanantion. Carnit Goldwasser's story really does not interest me anymore. She is living her life. what about the Shalits???????? Where are our values - Mrs. Livni????????????? In the shop in Kikar Hamedina??????? Why do you never answer - livni??????? You have nothing to say of any importance.
15. Exactly what Bib promised
Jack ,   Tel Aviv   (03.26.09)
Bibi said the whole time that he first and foremost wanted a national unity government. So anybody who voted for him and thought they were getting a rightist government is only deluding themselves.
16. be realistic.....Natanyahu = politician
moshe ,   Tivon, Israel   (03.26.09)
Lets be realistic Netanyahu is a politician, NOT a prophet. Of course he will work to increase HIS prestige and image ! Perhaps that is HIS 1st priority, but Israeli economy, and Israeli interests are at least HIS 2nd priority. The question at hand is WHO can be PM of Israel that is any better , somebody closer to Ben Gurion or Begin ? Those days are GONE. moshe
17. Bibi betrays ...(again)
DT ,   TA Israel   (03.26.09)
Most people who know Bibi knew he would betray his voters and that is why I never voted for him .This will be the last time he is PM though
18. Beeb's earned the disdain of millions before even starting
Hologdal   (03.26.09)
Shoulda woulda coulda voted for IHud Leumi... Now we have another unprincipled person in charge, hopefully he won't be as hapless as the previous gang (can anyone be a worse performer than the clowns?)
19. i do not agree
JO   (03.26.09)
I voted for Bibi and I do not agree. I would have liked a Labour, Likud and Kadima coalition with Bibi as head as I count him as the most able of the three to lead. I was disappointed with Livni and I hail Barak's courage. Politics has to be above small petty issues at times. Most parties agree to the peace process , they only difffer on how they plan to get there. Livni would have lost us a great deal, and Barak is weak in this area. Bibi is as tough as we can get, and that , in the light of who we are dealing with, is what we need. He is also great on economics. He is pragmatic too. For the record, I do not like Lieberman, he is no democracy's friend but he can be reined. My only consern for Bibi is that he would give in to Shas and give back these unfair child allowances.
20. Bibi is loyal only to Bibi! Barak is loyal to Barak!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (03.26.09)
They are politicians not leaders. They say there are miracles. Well, it will be a real miracle if this government lasts 6 months. Lieberman with Shas, Labor with Bibi - ha, ha ,ha. Get ready for the 19th Knesset! The best thing for th Likud is to throw Bibi out and elect Silvan Shalom as head of the party.
21. Let us deal with Iran first !!!!!!!!!!!
Trumpeldor   (03.26.09)
Political discussions later !
22. Is this America?
Adam ,   Raanana   (03.26.09)
Do we vote someone in and complain about them during their entire term? What people don't understand is that a far right government is not credible on a global level nor does it provide reasonable checks and balances. With Labor in government, we have those checks and balances to keep the government from going totally overboard. What would you rather have? Bibi, unable to form a narrow right government, throwing the opportunity allowing Livni to take control and form a left wing government. Or Bibi sacrificing a little to achieve a government that he can actually run? With Iran inching closer to a nuclear bomb and the world inching closer to a major war with Israel as the main event, I would rather have Bibi at the helm than Livni.
23. You vote for BB and get Sh-ass
Avi ,   Rannana   (03.26.09)
Which is a bit like drinking a glass of wine only to discover its paint stripper.
24. To: #3: Actually Bunny, Bibi didn't win anything
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (03.26.09)
The only winner in the election was the right wing which was driven by hatred. No hatred by Israelis but hatred by Arabs, within ans without, of our way of life, our freedom and democracy and a desire to wipe Israel off the map. Regrettably, Israelis fell into the Netanyahu trap and his ability to sell ice to an Eskimo. However, Obama is no an Eskimo and they only thing he will achieve are frozen relations with the only "ally" we have the USA. Some may say "so what". Others will say that without the USA veto in the UN Sec Council we would be in very big trouble. Just look what the "abstention" did a few months ago on the Gaza vote. In the end Bibi will do what the Americans tell him to do just as he did with the Wye Plantation Agreement and the "rightees" will walk out and low and behold we will have another general election!
25. Politicians are better than prostitutes
Ilan ,   Ariel   (03.26.09)
They can continue working when they are so unattractive you rather vomit than look at them.
26. Who would think? Likud'sw history of disenfranchisment
Kerwood Derby ,   Frostbite Falls, MN   (03.26.09)
Bibi gleefully shook the bloody paw of one of the enemy and gave away the first land owned by the first Jew. Sharon/Scheinerman disavowed the Likud charter too, ignored his sworn oath, by his lips, to abide by the Likud referendum against the oppostion (Mitzna) keroush Katif , Jewish cleansing , Judenrein, unilateral ransom to the mass-murdering extortionist plan. This is why Feiglin is spinning his wheels tilting at windmills. The Likud will allow its leaders to subvert its own charter and referndum without sanction. The likud "justice" is wholly to be condemned for not expelling its own, for not expelling those that come to kill you instead of the Jews who love the land. You know what Bibi did, and will do again-G-d forbid because the Likud won't enforce its own laws.
27. Time to replace Bibi.
Wise Saba ,   Netivot   (03.26.09)
28. No he did not
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.26.09)
What is the point of this article? Or did the author just get back from vacation? Every single Zionist voter new exactly what Netanyahu would do, be it from the National Union, Feiglin, Makor Rishon or Arutz 7. Every single Zionist voter made a rational decision based on that knowledge. This is an entirely different situation when previous Prime Ministers (for example, Barak or Sharon) lied and betrayed their voters.
29. Better Labor than Kadima
Leonid ,   Israel   (03.26.09)
Due to the Labor's presence, the government will not look extreme right. At any rate, it's better than M-me Livny whose intentions are to desintegrate Israel starting from her capital. As to M-r Netanyahu, his past activity (Hebron, Gaza) does not make us trust him much. So, I'd ask Dr. Haim Misgav: Who instead?
30. Israel Israeli #28: You are in denial
Steve   (03.26.09)
You are right about Netanyahu. Every Jew who voted for Likud knew exactly what they would get; a turncoat. But you are wrong about Sharon. After the 9/11Muslim-terror atrocities, Bush unveiled his vision for a Muslim-terror state in Israel. Sharon protested with his "Israel will not be Czechoslovakia" speech but quickly retreated and got with the Bush plan for Israel's destruction. Sharon accepted the Bush / Saudi road map; Sharon ignored his party's referendum against "disengagement" from Gaza; Sharon fired cabinet ministers who disagreed with him; Sharon campaigned on the theme that "a Palestinian state is inevitable" and "we will will make painful concessions." Apparently you voted to re-elect this war hero turned traitor in 2003 and now you complain that you were betrayed and you angrily denounce Haim Misgav asking "what is the point of this article?"
