Assad senior was one of the most respect leaders in the region in the arab world because he wasn't afraid to attack Israel. Junior is terrified of Israel and wouldn't dare start a war he knows he would loose. Instead of being the conquering arab hero his father was seen as he was forced out of Lebanon which he is still isn't happy about which is why he continues intefere in Lebanon via Hezbullah. He is rightly seen as Irans puppet becase they arm him and pay his bills. He talks alot about wars with Israel even puts on a show of strengh now and again but the last thing he wants is a war He knows he will loose and if he is seen to have humiliated Syria he will be overthrown or killed by his own people. He is desperate to get the world to push Israel into a negotiated solution because he knows Israel is run by a bunch of fools most the time and its controled by the US and today the dominant way of thinking is a treaty for the sake of a treaty is the only option.
