Halachic ruling forbids strawberries    Kobi Nahshoni
31. NO strawberries
We should have a halchic ruling that these people ought to mind their own business and stop bothering us with such nonsense. People have been eating microscopic insects without knowing it from before the torah was given on Mt Sinai. They all sinned?
Eli ,   Israel   (04.03.09)
32. Check your beards!
I'd hate to think how many microscopic insects are living in there and that you swallow.

True faith cannot be killed by external influences. Faith is of the heart and can be obtained only by a gift from G-d. What you have lost is things of your own imagination, not true faith. If you guard your faith, nothing in this world can destroy it. Perhaps if you seek to recover your faith by the proper means in Torah, you will find the gift of faith given only by El Shaddai, blessed be He.

Which do you love more? G-d and His Torah, or strawberries? The solution is simple, don't eat strawberries.
David ,   USA, exile   (04.03.09)
35. Good news
I now know not to buy any food from the PA. We have the same problem in the US, we buy food from Mexico, and in ignorance people eat the stuff not knowing the conditions it was grown in. I have drove the roads in Mexico and had my eys burn form the pesticides, fungesides, and herbicides sprayed on the fields. Oh not to mention the same, crap,e-coli saturated watter used. Next to the border in San Diego we can't use the beach because of the bacteral soup in the water. Ray

36. Get a life!
What happened to rabbis like those who wrote the Talmud who were doctors,m shoemakers, and otherwise real people who worked for a living and therefore had time for arguments with a little more substance. It should be a Halachic rule that rabbis work real jobs for a living and deal with silly matters on a part-time basis.
Stuart Wilder ,   Doylestown, USA   (04.03.09)
37. I love strawberries
and will continue to eat them when they are fresh. In the states, no bugs are permitted. However, in NYC; the rabbis discovered there are bugs in the water; sooo; to make the water kosher, you boil it and the bugs you will never see are gone. However, if you want to drink it, put it in the fridge first. Tastes better when cold. Solution, when boiling the water, place eggs in it; ergo hard bopiled eggs. In addition, the water now can be used with sweet-touch-ne-tea bags and you can have all the tea you want, or just use it for bathing; or even for a mikvah. Don't waste water; especially sans bugs. To return to strawberries, ask that rabbinical authority has anybody had health problems as a result of eating those bug infested strawberries? Misplaced zeal ?? To those who feel they must obey whatever their rabbi tells them, go for it. DON"T EAT STRAWBERRIES. Also, don't visit NYC; you will be very thirsty.
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (04.03.09)
38. I'm confused...
I can puree the bugs with a blender but not with my teeth?
L ,   USA   (04.03.09)
39. Religion Gone Mad!
You can't eat them because there are bugs on them BUT if you puree them with the bugs on them then you can eat them because the bugs are digestible. Is this a joke? No wonder Israel society is so screwed up.
World Citizen ,   the world   (04.03.09)
40. Rabbis should wear face masks
These guys should wear face masks like Jain monks and nuns in India who wear masks to avoid inhaling small organisms. This is what Charedi Judaism has come to!! Handouts from the government, not serving in the Army and making a living by searching for more things we can't do.
Jay ,   Washington DC   (04.03.09)
41. palestinians are to be blamed for the insects, nooot!!
JayZ ,   Jerusalem   (04.03.09)
42. Who wan't to eat insects??? Anyone???
PS The insects do not require microscopes to see. If the bug is not visible to the naked eye, then the halacha is that you are permitted to eat it. btw, I was eating many bugs for years, before my Mom decided to wash romaine lettuce, and to do that twice. You can see the bugs floating on the top of the water, moving their legs, if you have decent eyesight (if you are under 40, sorry to be agist.)

44. I love strawberries, but...
What kind of bugs are these? Agronomists can't figure out how to get rid of them? In the States, I used to grow strawberries. When I tried growing them here, though, they didn't do too well and a moshavnik friend told me I just *had* to start spraying them with chemical poisons. Reluctantly, I pretty much stopped eating them. More recently, I've been very happy to find organically-grown strawberries in the stores, We'd just gotten used to eating them again. Now this...
Joan ,   Haifa   (04.04.09)
45. Are these the same Rabbis....
Who banned water, after discovering it contained non-kosher microscopic organisms? Bloody Hashem and his bloody creations, they get everywhere!!
Adam ,   Israel   (04.04.09)
46. No. 39 World Citizen
You obviously don't know much about Israeli society. In fact, it isn't screwed up, since the overwhelming majority of Israelis don't give a rat's ass about this sort of nonsense.

Not that you care, but regardless of how tongue in cheek you mean it, blasphemy is still sin. Not only is the content of your post offensive but you actually insult El Shaddai, blessed be He, by calling Him Hashem instead of by the Name He gave to Moshe to give the people because your rabbis says that is the thing to do. You put your takanot above the Word of YHVH! Now, I know many will say I am sinning by using the Name, but Torah (the only one) says differently.
David ,   USA, exile   (04.04.09)
50. Gnats and Camels
Matthew 23:24 (New International Version) You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
Martin ,   Killeen, TX, USA   (04.04.09)
51. Forensics determines the time of death according to the
insects and parasites that have left a body. There is a time order factor. The good rabbis will make the police work more difficult if people don't have the insects leaving their bodies to make such determinations.
Rivkah   (04.04.09)
52. 44 Joan: There are GMO fruits that have moth and fly
DNA to make them insect resistant. But GMO's (genetically modified organisms) upset the digestive system and make me sick.
Rivkah   (04.04.09)
53. Genetically engineer strawberries
I recall being told by a food tech student Jellyfish genes were put into strawberries for some reason. I'm curious. Would this affect allowance of eating genetically modified foods because of Jewish/Islamic food laws
Kyle ,   Obamastan   (04.04.09)
54. When I was a child and there were insects in the cookies or
oatmeal or other packages in the house, including instant potato flakes with weevils, the food was given to us to eat, anyway. The insects were protein and were cooked. That is not ideal, but my mother was not going to throw away food because there were insects in it. Now the foods are often irradiated which is worse than insects because cooked insects are sterile, but ionizing radiation causes cancer and is difficult to chelate out of the body.
Rivkah   (04.04.09)
55. #1 - killing the bugs doesn't make them kosher
david ,   new york   (04.05.09)
56. #54 - what are you talking about?
if food is irradiated, it is not going to cause you cancer. irradiated food does not GIVE OFF radiation. its like saying that you'll get burned if you eat food that had been cooked previously.
david ,   new york   (04.05.09)
57. How about medicines made from pork, like Armour's Thyroid?
Is that allowed? I had doubts, so I switched to a synthetic thyroid supplement. What about heart valve replacements from pigs? Since so many verses in the Tanak and Prophets say the Messiah does not protect swine eaters or those who eat anything unclean, this is a concern. Falling under the promises of Psalms 91 is a worthy goal where one is protected from plagues.
Rivkah   (04.05.09)
58. Tutim
Tutim, tutim, boi nikneh rak tutim, Bimkom od mechonot shel milchama! More strawberries for us then.
Talula ,   Israel   (04.05.09)
59. Israel's strawberries are the LEAST of her problems
make a list of Israel's serious sins and bugs on strawberries is so far down it hardly matters. I suggest taking care of the most obviously serious issues first, and when the house is coming into order, worry about strawberries.
Steve   (04.05.09)
60. 56 David: Microwave radiation destroys the nutrient value of
food and puts free radicals and ionizing radiation into the food that is then eaten. Try having fecal and hair heavy metals tests on yourself through kits that can be obtained on prescriptions to Doctors Data, Inc. in Illinois. Find out how radioactive YOU are from eating irradiated foods and microwaved foods, etc. Then pay for chelating out the radiation which is costly and takes quite a while. You may be spared from the cancer causing effects of ionizing radiation if you have it chelated out, but the cost will prevent you from wanting to get radioactive again. Your post reflects a lack of study on this subject. The Bible says, "My people perish for lack of knowledge." I try to prevent that and you mock the knowledge I share.
