west world Israel doesn't fall behind. she joined west stupidity circle.
2. solution
D.... ,   haifa   (04.27.09)
israel should start spending its money on education , health , and helping the poor , instead of spending it on wars and the war hungry governments like the one we already have . and this iam sure will solve everyones problems including israeli students....
3. It was Golda Meir, the one with the black patch over one eye

itzik ,   modiin   (04.27.09)
throwing money at a problem rarely solves it. The problem stems from the fact that the ministry of education has been run by shulamit aloni, yuli tamir and the like. when zionism, judaism and national pride are viewed as illnesses you cannot expect more from the youth.
5. #2 - "D" in Haifa: You apparently mean the "Final Solution"
5th generation ,   Israel   (04.27.09)
What planet are you on? The war-hungry Arabs in this country don't run the education system. Without defense, the Jews who are the subject of this article would be singing HaTikva from some other continent altogether. But maybe that's what you want...?
6. Interesting study but...
Takan ,   Elat Israel   (04.27.09)
But who came with the conclusion to blame Elat and TV? These are things students should learn at school and not during their free time. TV programs can be very educative if you watch the right ones. The blame here falls on the teachers and the parents who do not hold their kids to high standards.
7. Some school boards did that here too.
Ypip ,   Canada   (04.27.09)
Thinking that your country can get by without any sort of pre-requisite towards its history is an idea of bad bricks short of the road.
8. you think thats bad...
jerusalem   (04.27.09)
my sister didnt even know (at the time) Arafat died and Abbas had been taking over (for then) i think 5 or 6 months. She was like "I wondered who was that guy, hes on tv more often lately"....
9. teaching
colin   (04.27.09)
Finding the student stupid is the result of the useless education ministry.Stop wasting time on BIBLICAL STUDIES AND UTILISE THE TIME FOR MODERN HISTORY OR MATHAMATICS WHICH A STUDENT WILL UTILISE ALL HIS LIFE. The bible is outdated and useless for modern living.Teachers are also a low standerd as the salaryis minimum. The education must be totally revised to fit the modern word and times.
10. Dumbing down the populations is certainly working.
Rivkah   (04.27.09)
What are some of the techniques by which that is being accomplished? Fluoride in water and toothpaste and mouthwash and other products lowers the I.Q. Thiomerosol mercury presevative in most vaccines affects brain function and in 1 in 100 children results in autism which Dr. Hulda Clark of Canada says is damage to the brain pathways caused by parasites that got into the body through perforations in the intestinal wall caused by mercury. She says it takes seven years to reverse the damage in children with a dropperful of tincture of green hulls of black walnuts extra strength twice daily in water or juice. There is less hope for reversing brain pathway damage in adults (called schizophrenia). Allowing children to watch and hear and do things that incite license and rebellion against Yah also dumbs down the brain. Feeding children junk food instead of a pure balanced diet of foods the Bible says are clean also dumbs down children. Discouraging reading by letting children play to many video games and watch too much tv also dulls the mind because reading activates an alpha level of brain activity. TV and video games activate a beta level of brain activity which is a lower level, almost a sleep or hypnosis. A neighbor boy in Tucson wanted an old Encyclopedia Britannica set I had so he could READ the books! So I gave them to him and he did read them! He did not live in Israel, but he could have told you who the first Prime Minister of Israel was, along with a lot of things children should know but don't if they don't have access to books with encouragements to read them. World Book Encyclopedia is more oriented toward young people, but Encyclopedia Britannica has a lot to offer in information schools may miss teaching. King Solomon said much study is a weariness of the flesh. It is, but the Bible also says to study to show yourself approved of God. That study should include the Tanakh in a daily reading to renew the spirit in children and grownups.
11. This is the road to disaster
Global Citizen ,   Israel & USA   (04.27.09)
If the coming generations of Israelis don't understand how they got the life of privilege they have now, the State is doomed to failure. Spoiled kids = spoiled everything. And boy, are Israeli kids spoiled because of everything these forgotten leaders did for them.
12. they confused president with prime minister because they did
(04.27.09)
not take survey seriuosly, and put down the first thing that sprang to mind
13. Educating the Israeli youth
muriel ,   israel   (04.27.09)
If it is a known fact that children do not know the correct answers to these queries, it is obvious that they are not being properly educated. The fault lies with the teachers.
14. Stop blaming teachers
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (04.27.09)
Teachers teach the curriuclum they are presented with. If the curriculum minimizes Israeli history than the teacher will not teach it. If kids learn information for a test and promptly forget it--because in their mind it is not important you can NOT blame a teacher. In today's society EVERYTHING seems to be more important than education. Teachers fight for children to behave properly in class. Frequently there is no support from home. Teachers can not do it all. They are not with kids 24/7. I wonder what the answers would be from kids in modern orthodox schools. I wonder if they would know more--That is the community that is still nationalistic and still has parents that by and large hold education to be important.
15. a requast...

someone have Rivkah English, English Rivkah dictionary I lost her after toothpaste and Fluoride in the drinking water, what the hell thos got to do with education.
16. No wonder.....
FO ,   Belgium   (04.27.09)
This is exactly what leftist leadership wanted to achieve. An ignorant youth, easy to handle, unaware of its recent history, just to dissimulate in the fog of ignorance the total misconduct of leftist management after WW I. An example: Why should students know what happened on November 1947? Some intelligent students could, god forbid, discover that the resolution voted that day by the UN General Assembly was in fact a faulty drafting. Why? Because on the 24th of July 1922, the League of Nations, in a unanimous vote by all its 51 members and joined by the United States of America, who wasn't a member of the League, adopted the "Mandate for Palestine". This Mandate recognized in its Preamble "the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country". (In clear, A State). The Mandate survived the demise of the League of Nations. Article 80 of the UN Charter implicitly recognizes the "Mandate for Palestine", which gave the Jews the irrevocable right to settle anywhere in Palestine, the area between the Mediterranean Sea and the River Jordan, including the Golan Heights. Britain, the Mandatory, whas ordered by the League to "facilitate Jewish immigration... in co-operation with the Jewish agency". This was in contradiction of leftist ideology, no to a Jewish State, and no to jewish middle-class immigrations. As wrote Moshe Shertock (Sharett), "Give me the good, not the rabble". (Tom Segev: "The seventh Million"). The left was interested in Marxist educated youth, with the aim to bring progress to the Arab masses, and possibly the creation of an Arab-Jewish State.(Hashomer Hatsair). In short, the implementation of the League's decisions in the years twenty, could have avoided the Shoah, partially, or who knows perhaps totally. So the left tried, with a certain success by the way, to sweep al recent history under the carpet. The results became evident to-day.
17. Similar issues, same problems here
eh-oop ,   UK   (04.27.09)
Not just ignorance of historical fact, but an education system that does not give children the tools to critically evaluate evidence and different approaches and which encourages a primarily emotional response when having to make a choice. It leaves children open to indoctrination by the left which makes its initial impact by calling for an emotional response to "victims", however worthy or unworthy of the term these may be. It reinforces this with the thrill of subversion and reassures its own victims that they're doing fine, because they have the moral highground. There is an utterly cynical manipulation of the educational system going on for the purpose of engineering social and political change.
18. #10 - PLEASE!It starts at home
M. ,   Israel   (04.27.09)
I have 2 teenage kids and I asked them these questions just now over lunch and they knew the answers. I agree that our school system lacks more than it doesn't. Sadly so. We need it to be rejuvenited, and bettered in all areas, and urgently so. But PELASE Rivkah, come on.....did you get all of tose chemicals maybe? Fluoride in water and toothpaste and mouthwash that lowers I.Q.? Seems that is what triggered this raved reply from you maybe? Too much moutwash for you? :-) Come on, get real.....a proper diet is always preferable to junk food, but some junk won't kill anyone. Only TV and PC and no reading is of course not good, I agree, but my kids also read and use the pc and facebook and icq and all of that, and they still keep on reading as well. Because I make sure they do! Most of it is how we raise our kids. It starts at home people. Too easy to always blame everyone else....why not look in the mirror once in a while???
19. The students aren't ignorant; they aren't taught!
(04.27.09)
The problem isn't the students! The problem is the educational system and the teachers in that system! Remember a mind is a terrible thing to waste!
20. # 15 :-)
M ,   Israel   (04.27.09)
You want a Rivkah dictionary? Honey, seems you got too much fluoride in your toothpaste or was it in the drinking water? You lost the last of your I.Q. when you brushed your teeth this morning, or was it when you gurgeled and drank water, or.....I am so confused after brushing my teeth :-), no use trying to expalin anymore, you are doomed to Rivdumbnes...:-), we all are....

24. Complaining about the youth...
eras ,   Jlem, Israel   (04.27.09)
...is a phenomenon that exists in any society and goes way back in human history. And it was never true. The benchmark for education is usually set by older generations on the background of what was valuable to them. But times are changing, the teenagers of today live in a rapidly changing world of expanding complexity. They have to be fluent in the languages of electronic communication. Their set of skills changes, including knowledge the older generations don't hold and their perspective becomes more and more global. Besides, history has never been a favored topic amongst youngsters, no matter which country they come from. As an outsider in this society, I am really surprised about the rant. I have met a lot of Israeli teens that speak two, three, or more languages. A lot of them have a good musical and in many cases an impressive general education. They go to theater classes and show a great interest in other cultures. And they hold a good knowledge of Jewish history. But yeah, they mix up the first prime minister for the first president and they don't know his nickname. That spoils it all, doesn't it? Be proud of your kids. If the youth of Israel would be the youth of my country, I would be.
25.  Students: Ben-Gurion was Israel's 1st president
marss ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (04.16.11)
Who said it. "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." No it isn't the minister of Education. It is attributed to Socrates by Plato", and might come from Plato's Republic Book 4., written almost 2,500 years ago.
