31. God bless the Jewish state of Israel
Keyser ,   Nigeria   (05.08.09)
I am from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria and it is known by the state of israel that we are one tribe that believes in the jewish people/Israel and we are ready to do anything to ensure its survival even if it means taking up arms. But I am disgusted to note that hate mongers are abusing this term "anti semitism". This and lots of other similarly irresponsible articles are a slap on the face of christians and the catholics in particular. You must respect other religions for your own religion to be repected. The pope is our head and must be respected if you want to be respected. And remember that the support of the christians is vital for the survival of the jewish state of istrael. God bless Israel.
32. Who cares of Ben XVI
Frank ,   Canada   (05.08.09)
The Catholic Church will always be an ennemy of Israel because their long term goal is to have a Christian state in Fakestine and because they are appeasing Arabs in the vane hope of keeping alive a Christian presence in the region. They should have ask local Christians to join Israel. Christian anti-Semitism has destroyed the possibility of a Christian presence in the long run.
33. According to our Jewish Law
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim,   (05.08.09)
B"H According to halacha, our Jewish Law, the pop (I don't want to sin by naming him) is an idol worshipper, the lesser of his crimes. Then he is an idol worshipper in public, an act of Chillul Hashem. Then he is a public istigator of idol worship in public, a crime that carries the death penalty. Whoever closes an eye and says nothing renders himself guilty of the same crimes. The fact that Israel welcomes such a figure appears to be an anti-Jewish act on the part of the State, an entity that more often then not shows itself as anti-Jewish .
34. What choice is there?
Steven K.   (05.08.09)
The pope expressed interest in coming to Israel. We have only two choices: to let him come or to not let him come. This article talks about all of the negatives of the former, but let us think about the latter. Say that Israel refuses the Pope to visit. Do you have any idea how bad that would make us look? If Israel coughs, it gets media attention. If we were to refuse the Pope's visit, we would lose whatever support we have from countries with a large catholic population (i.e. a majority of the world). It would look terrible. Considering the alternative, I would say let him come.
35. to the author of this article
exsupporter ofIsrael ,   Milano, Italy   (05.08.09)
your techics in research in this article is disterbingly similar to those used by antisemites. Today it the Jews who owe Catholics an appology for the lies and hate articles that had been published without limit. And the worst of all was the TV program that defamed christianity in ways that not even Osama BinLaden dreamed of doing.
36. answer to 35
Gil F ,   Rehovot - Israel   (05.09.09)
Most of the Nazis that arrived to Latin America after Holocaust were helped by the active action of the Church. Those are registered facts of life, and even you may like or not, cannot call it "defamation". Just in case you do not know these facts, look at "ratlines" , ask how Ante Pavelic arrived to America, same as Priebke, and thousand others.... Sorry to tell you, Roman Catholic Church did almost nothing to save Jews before and during, did almost all to save the Ustachas and Nazis.

Ben ,   Monroe USA   (05.09.09)
For 2000 years Christianity led by the papacy has preached hatred of the Jew. Now you have the unmitigated gall and stupidity to state we have defamed Christianity. Methinks your brain has turned to mush after reading and believing all that the New Testament says. Yes, exsupporter of Israel; you better read up on the crusades, the spanish inquisition, and lets not overlook the Shoah. Of course we speak about the Russians and her pogroms, the Poles and their anti-semitic actions; etc. We will apologize the same day your pope tells the world that he and his predecessors have preached lies re the Jew. Until then, go kiss the ring of the Pope.

39. Sheer ignorance
Faraz ,   Meldreth, UK   (05.09.09)
Giora Eiland might want to resit some history classes. At the time this Pope was a boy, it was mandatory for children his age to join the Hitler youth. So the "significant stain" was unavoidable. What was he supposed do do, upset his tray of baked beans in the canteen hall to show he did not support Nazism? And why should he not show that he does not support the occupation - there are few in the world that do?
40. Pope's visit
Richard Ruhling, MD ,   Washington DC, USA   (05.09.09)
I appreciate your insights and want to affirm them. More than have jurisdiction over a few sites, the pope wants to move there as Daniel 11:45 suggests. This is supported by testimony of a former Jesuit priest who paid the ultimate price for sharing information in The Godfathers by Jack Chick (you may read if you Google). My info is much more concise at www.PopesVisit.net Shalom, but I'm afraid not!
41. #28, Cornwell
Giovanni ,   Milan, Italy   (05.09.09)
The Cornwell book was rightfully criticized as it was written to preach a thesis but sloppily researched. Even the cover was an image photoshopped to make it seem shot some years later than it actually was.
42. We should care what the murdering Catholics say?
Yosi M. ,   Gilo-Jerusalem   (05.09.09)
For 2,000 years, 1st as the Roman empire then changing names to Roman Catholic church, they have been killing our people and teaching their people lies about us. Why is the Cardinal of the Inquisition from WWII still on the list of wanted war criminals that were in Yugoslavia? Vicar of what? He represents the ultimate evil! Neither does Ynet or do ANY Jews owe the head of this criminal organization any sort of apology. Mr #35 never supporter of Israel, we will not apologize to this pagan, idoletrous, murderous pretender.
43. The Pope
Luiz Haddad ,   Rio, Brazil   (05.10.09)
I deeply regret the article above. I am Catholic and friend of the Jewish people. Past errors and sins can not justify so heavy words. We must work together for a better world. Our God is unique. Please, Giora, thinck about it. Shalom. Luiz Haddad.

To #1: you are wrong ,   Frank   (05.10.09)
Refusing entry may be bad PR once but on the long run it will prove useful because the Catholic Church would have to respect Israelis.
45. Eiland is right
Brod ,   USA   (05.10.09)
The visit will only be used as a propaganda tool by Israel's enemy. Israel should cancel it.

Walter ,   Portland, USA   (05.10.09)
The article or opinion piece was quite poor and less than factual. For one thing, as you have said, joining the Hitler Youth was mandated by the state, and was not a personal choice. Also, Ratzinger was drafted at 16 years of age into army. Who would expect a 16 year old draftee to basically commit suicide in an effort to desert? Eiland is either very ignorant or worse by asserting that Ratzinger had real choices here. I think many of the hostile posters here are just a bit too self-righteous, and set up standards of conduct they they themselves would not even attempt to meet in the real world.

Suggestion, don't take this gentelman as a son in law,i am sure the Pope too, wouldn't want to meshadach himself with you, besides, according to the pope's halacha, you are a idol worshiper too,so,don't mix dogma with matters of state.Israel doesn't have many friends, may be this visit will turn the pope into a friend,Remember what the Talmud says about Hananya ben Avkilas at kamtsa-Bar kamtsa ?.
48. Bitter comments on papal visit hurt Israel
Ted ,   Surrey, Canada   (05.10.09)
It is sad to read some of the comments on this page. So much bitterness! One can well understand the resentment of Jews who have been persecuted in the past, but the obvious inaccuracies of this article and the bitterness of many comments that follow it do nothing fof the Jews' cause, which so many Christians today care deeply about. I am not a Catholic, and make no excuse for the antisemtism of either Catholics or Protestants in the past or today. I am one who wants the Jews to be fairly treated and who finds the media bias against them today a painful thing. But then I read some of the comments in support of this article and I fear that some Jews are the worst enemies of Israel because of the resentment they are bound to create by their comments.

50. 40 Richard Ruhling: With the Roman Catholics now
Rivkah   (05.10.09)
controlling the US Congress and US Senate, and Catholic members on the US Supreme Court increasing, and the CIA and FBI and many state governments and even EX (formerly Blackwater) controlled by the Roman Catholics and you living in the USA, it is surprising you are not afraid. Perfect love casts out fear, but the kind of power to attack a person the Roman Catholics have is awe inspiring. I am convinced that when I was targeted, GPS tracking devices showed Catholics where I was and calls would be made to restaurants I entered with instructions for poisoning me. Or there are a lot of rogue poisoners in America attacking people. When a female attorney and I were both poisoned at a Starbucks restaurant in Hanford, California, when we went there, it was shocking but revealing. Friday evening, I ate a small piece of bread from a communal loag after a Judaic religious service at B'Nai David Congregation and my tongue burned from something in the piece of bread for hours. I chelated out heavy metals as soon as I got home in case it was radioactive or a toxic heavy metal. It was a small amount that did not cause pain in my liver, so little was absorbed. A heavy metals and toxins test will tell me what it was, but that takes a month to get the results back. Since that is how I was poisoned at a Roman Catholic church a few years ago when I wore a Magen David necklace, it is a familiar M.O. When you are poisoned, the police will not investigate and do not care if it is the Catholic church that is behind it. They control police departments, too, and district attorneys and judges. The judiciary in America is now like the Spanish Inquisition, except there is a higher conviction rate of 95 per cent instead of 90 per cent under Spain's Inquisition centuries ago when Jews were dug up from graves and put on trial for the church to steal their properties. You say you are not afraid. I hope that does not mean you are not on guard.

Israel is more interested in pleasing her false god ,the nations than Hashem.

53. #44 you have a strange idea about respect
Eitan ,   Israel   (05.10.09)
If you refuse entry to somebody you gain his respect? How does that work? What behavior seems more noble to you: if we are able to open our doors to people despite our differences and maintain the air of confidence, decency and maturity, or if we use every opportunity to be spiteful and vendictive ? If we always act offended and express it through little meaningless barking, we are not going to gain respect of anybody. Refusing him entry is not going to scare the Pope or the Christian world, it's just going to show us as immature unreasonable angry people, and tint all our actions with this light. We are not going to be to get people's ear and establish a dialogue, if we every time get angry and slam the door. Jewish people are supposed to be the wise, calm, rational thinkers, not like some impulsive careless teenagers.
54. #9 is 100% right
avi ,   gaza   (05.10.09)
The Catholic church directly or indirectly has tortured and ripped off our people more than any other nation/power. They currently have in their possession countless treasures that rightfully belong to our people and should be returned to us even without any concessions on our part. This man is coming here empty-handed, and as an added Chutzpah will surely issue damning criticism of Israel. The only way this will stop is when we steadfastly show our pride for our people and nation.

Mari   (05.12.09)
2000 years, Yosi? don't you think that is a bit much? the Christians were persecuted and slaughtered in Roman coliseums at that time- hardly in a position to murder Jews.... history was not your strong point- just guessing. If you are referring to the Crusades against Islam- the first one in 1095- the Jews were victims there, I agree- so- that now leaves us with 1000 years- do you feel cheated? just for you: the Roman empire and the Roman Catholic church are not exactly the same- your ignorance is amazing. The cardinal of the Inquisition from WWII- wow, who is that, pray tell? You call the Pope evil? 'pork-eating idol- worshiper? you people are outdoing each other in insults- sounds more like your Arab brothers- they use the same kind of language....good thing we Europeans show a bit more restraint when talking about other human beings. Unlike you, we have learned a few things over the years-
56. Pope abandons morality for politics
david singer ,   sydney   (05.16.09)
Pope Abandons Morality For Politics Pope Benedict’s political comments during his visit to the Holyland have given Jews and Catholics all over the world every reason to believe that if you can’t trust the Pope to keep an agreement then who can you trust? The Pope’s political remarks were a cardinal breach of Clause 11(2) of the Agreement signed between Israel and the Holy See in 1993 which states: “The Holy See while maintaining in every case the right to exercise its moral and spiritual teaching-office, deems it opportune to recall that owing to its own character, it is solemnly committed to remaining a stranger to all merely temporal conflicts, which principle applies specifically to disputed territories and unsettled borders.” There is no ambiguity in these clear and precise words. The inexcusable breach of these terms by the Pope signifies the ease with which agreements can be abandoned - even by one recognised as occupying a position among the most moral held by any human being. The Pope had properly told both his Arab and Jewish hosts that his visit was intended as a pilgrimage. He may well have been able to inspire them had he stuck firmly to that agenda and not plunged headlong into a minefield that continues to claim as victims the most powerful politicians on this planet. His attempt to play the base political game and emulate the long line of politicians who have traced the same path in the Middle East speaking with forked tongues was a disaster. Papal intrusion into politics is most unwise especially where the Pope in this case has made a specific commitment to remain detached from the current conflict. In breaching rather than observing that commitment the Pope has failed the most basic of tests that human beings are asked to respect and observe - sticking to an agreement. His failure to do so is a matter of great regret.
