5. In the 1800's, the retirement in the US Military was
Rivkah   (05.14.09)
after thirty years of service, but even people who lost an arm or an eye were allowed to continue in service. But life was hard and only one per cent of those who started a military career, got a retirement income from it by finishing 30 years service. President Eisenhower changed that to a twenty year retirement and an up or out requirement to stay after a certain number of years at each rate (enlisted) or rank (officers). You would think people would be thankful for a shorted career requirement for a retirement income, but that was not the case with the dedicated mindset of the old US military, unlike a lot of folks today. There were a lot of objections since that was a forced retirement for a lot of people when they needed to income for children going to college, etc. Some people, even E-2's, liked to stay E-2 for thirty years without advancing, like tailors. But now it is up or out (get promoted or be forced out). The US Navy lost a lot of good tailors and other specialties that were needed but people who were promotion minded were not interested in. So a lot of work got changed to civilian helpers, like tailor shops. No longer are their leaders of the likes of Douglas MacArthur and David Eisenhower who spent many years in service stuck at one rank because of slow promotions between wars. They would have been forced out instead of being there with the knowledge and expertise of many decades of service to help in wars that the US won back then, but now does not seem to have as much success in battles and wars. Short military careers can be hindering in some ways for the entire services.

12. 3 Giora: I see you like "yes men". It takes courage to

oppose a policy by speaking out since most politicians like to hear "fantastic" instead of "baloney" to their bum ideas as well as the good ideas. Learning how to say "fantastic" is critical to keeping a job with most bosses, so Prime Minister Netanyahu has the strength of courage to listen to a strong objection and not take it personally.

A question to you, "giora, london uk": How much control of yourself do y o u think you have had when writing this? You do not do justice to this great man, a role model far beyond Israel! I await your apology.

chances are that both bibi and gabi agree that there's no reason for a contract officer who's actually a computer maintenance person in the kiryah with a rather large salary to get pension at 45, then hit the private market (ok, nowadays that's no big glik, either); i'm sure they're both more worried about the ones who actually put their necks on the line. as for giora in london - if you're who i think you are, irony abounds; if not, then you really gotta stop breathing that london air.

20. Israel is very fortunate to have Gabi A running the army
Al   (05.14.09)
He is an officer and a gentleman. He knows full well his conduct as COS has to be above reproach. He knows that he has to lead Israe's army in these most difficult ttimes. Israel today is facing times akin to the very early years of the state. Lack of money, no real friends and a vcious enemy waiting to pounce. We are indeed fortunate to have GABI A running the show. I wish him and you all g-d speed.
21. #20 Al...

I bet you kick yourself each day because you weren't born looking like our Gabi. He's so HOT!! I bet your wife wouldn't have run off and left you if you did look like him or had half of his integrity and a quarter of that attitude. OH YUMMY!
