1. We Should Celebrate The Naqba
Yishai Kohen ,   YeShA, Israel   (05.25.09)
After all, had the Arabs not chosen war and then fled, we would not have liberated parts of OUR land in 1948, including half of Jerusalem, much of the Galil, the Negev, etc. And this set the stage for the next level of liberation- in 1967.
2. A new Ministry
Michael ,   Haifa   (05.25.09)
Instead of having so many Ministers without portfolios, we can now set up a "Ministry of Thought Control" and give one of the unportfolioed lads a proper job.
3. Dr. Gross - there are several similar laws around the world
Eric ,   Tel Aviv   (05.25.09)
Dr. Gross, consider the following examples where national pride or history are legislated: - Thailand: it is against the law to speak negatively of the monarchy. - Germany and most of Europe - it is against the law to deny the Holocaust. - Multiple countries - Laws that prohibit the burning of national flags. - Muslim law - it is against the law to speak or depict their prophet. In fact if the Muslims will allow negative things to be said about Mohamed then they should be allowed to celebrate the Nakba, but until then they should recognize the UN sanctioned and created country of Israel.
4. Can ie: Mexican American citizens swear allegience to.......
Sof Sof ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.25.09)
a Mexican state within the territories of CA & TX?? Openly revolt, refuse to serve in th US army, slam the US and swear they will fight to the death to see their "demand" without being stripped of their US citizenship.? Of course not. It's called treason. It's Israel, if your an Israeli you MUST SUPPORT your country or be deported.
5. What about if some truly do not
(05.25.09)
it is against the law to deny the Holocaust
6. If the Arab hate Israel so much let them move to the 22 Arab
Frank ,   USA   (05.25.09)
entities.
7. Go To Jordan For Nakba
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (05.25.09)
Daniel Edelson, you cite three lawyers against and one for. Why not two or three for? It is really spurious in this case to hold Israel up to US or other national standards even though this is what people seem to do....Israel is a nation-state of Jews. The fact that Arabs are here as well is a historical circumstance which those who do not have a deep or genuine or conscious allegiance to our country choose to turn into something it is not. No one expects many Arabs to like being here without actually "owning" the land and government but it is outrageous to give them license to publically protest the existence of our country. The Jewish state is not an entity where everything is up for negotiation. Also, as to copying the US, the US is a very large country which has always been able to absorb a percentage of freaks, nuts, and hostility, while Israel is a very small country that has to be very careful what is allowed to grow. The YNET editorial staff needs to reconsider its policy of constantly thrusting Arab demands in readers' faces as if these demands have large legitimacy, which they do not.
8. Question for Dr. Gross
(05.25.09)
How are you a constitutional law expert when in fact Israel does not have a constitution?
9. If anyone is against the founding of the state,
jason white ,   afula,israel   (05.25.09)
then leave! We can do without all elements that are anti Zionist. Those that support the enemy have no right to live here. Most countries call it treason and have the death penalty.
10. Civil Rights
Ricardo Macher ,   KarneiShomron-Israel   (05.25.09)
I really couldn't care less about what Dr. Gross thinks (if he does) It is easy to see through why our supreme court is always again any Zionist resolutions, they are enlightened and we are brutes, but in democracy, it's majority that decides.
11. Nakba Law
Nili ,   Jerusalem   (05.25.09)
I do not know many countries who allow their flags to be burned, their national anthem to be ignored and their Independence Day desecrated--so why the big fuss? The arabs started the war--left their homes willingly and when the Jews refused to die they start whining Nakba! Instead of rebuilding their lives they chose to build bombs--just another excuse to try and wear Israel down. They lost--get over it!
12. Nothing to do with freedom of speech - Just public expressio
rebecca ,   modiin   (05.25.09)
This law will only ban public events. You want to go celebrate the Necaba do it quietly. No-one will stop you. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech, just hate mongering. Like these lefty peace-now-at-any cost idiots encourage.
13. Unaceptable v Illegal
David Olesker ,   Jerusalem Israel   (05.25.09)
Dr. Shuchtman writes, "Imagine US Jews declaring a day of morning on July 4 - that would be unacceptable". Yes it would, but it would not be illegal. It would be constitutionally protected free speech. Proclaiming the creation of the Jewish State a "disaster" is certainly unacceptable, and should be met with concerted public opprobrium, but should it be a crime? If that can be made a crime, so could a day of mourning for the victims of the Gush Katif withdrawal.
14. this is about as intelligent as...
(05.25.09)
deciding that a law is needed to keep people off the roads on Yom Kippur! Because if a law were passed regarding driving on Yom Kippur we all know that the "Dafka effect" would hit us full force in the face and people who have never driven on Yom Kippur would suddenly decide to start driving on Yom Kippur
15. Nakba Sameach!! Let's pass candies on the streets!!
Arthur ,   SF, CA   (05.25.09)
Let's drop tons of candies over their heads!! Let's cheer! It's sweet indeed! It's the celebration of our victory! It's the celebration of Israel withstanding arab agression, it's the celebration of life over evil murderers! NAQBA SAMEACH, cousins!!! Enjoy it to the fullest!
16. Constitutional law expert
Mati ,   kiryat moshe   (05.25.09)
Tel Aviv U are experts in trying to apply US constitutional law to Israelis. We don't need a constitution of our own since we are not actually a sovereign country :/
17. No one is banning u from remembering The Holocaust
Omar ,   Haifa   (05.25.09)
why cant we remember our own, did our people get killed in sabra and shatila, kofor kasem etc, 100000+ palestinians fled their homes because they were afraid they would get killed, your state isn't a democracy no more
18. Nakba Law
riki ,   us   (05.25.09)
Wake up Palestinians...if you want a state you need to go past history and make your own future. You don't see Great Britain, rance or Spain crying over the inception of the United States of America. They are partners of peace and democracy. Proclaiming that the Israeli State is a catastrophe is "crying over spilled milk". YOU should be the one to "ban nakba day" and not the State of Israel. Then for sure you would make a statement that you want to live side by side in security, democratic independence and enjoy the economic wealth with your neighbors. G-d Bless the State of Israel.
19. #17 - How about celebrating bravery of 600,000+
Arthur ,   SF, CA   (05.25.09)
Jews who had no place to run in face of the arab onslaught with the only goal - to exterminate the Jewish Yishuv? You are a double faced coward - if you don't like living in the Land - move! It's out, out, out....
20. to 18, imagine this,
Omar ,   haifa   (05.25.09)
if the german goverment denied the holocaust and jailed everyone who mentioned it in public, would this be acceptable to you as a jew living in germany? i think not but as you being on the other side (the regular german citizen) you would say the same stuff you just said, which it disturbing to me..
21. Palestinians have the right
(05.25.09)
to remember the injustice and the Nakba. No body is stopping jews form remebering what ever they want to remember.
22. I Love Israel; I Love Erez Yisrael
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (05.25.09)
1)I want to hear the sound of the shofar. If I hear the sounds of any other religion, I only want to hear them after profound respect is given to our people. 2)Omar, you can stay here as long as you follow our laws and our major ways. When you depart from them you do not belong here. Respect is a major factor in remaining here. 3)BTW, and this is directed to YNET staff, even though many haredim do not recognize the government of Israel as legitimate, you don't see them holding counter-festivals on Yom Haazma'ut, Yom Yerushalayim etc, do you? They certainly don't hold Holocaust remembrance counter-festivals or even mourning services, do they? 4) The Jews are a nation with a specific land; the Jews follow the law of the torat Moshe and beyond; it is this law that has kept us a people for 3500+ years; from before the concepts of democracy, republicanism, or communism, or anything that the Europeans have thought of. Certain foreigners have always since biblical days been accepted in our country and others not, but even with the ones accepted, they have had to follow our laws and major rules. We only need to slightly modify at times the laws we received originally and sometimes modify them based on best practices from other countries, but we do not need to adopt these countries' ill-fitting practices because they are the norms of others. 5) I ask you, other posters, if you had your druthers, would you buy a suit or dress that did not fit just because someone was selling it to you and told you that it was the current style? I think not. Then why buy these ill-fitting opinions that various of you have already poked clear holes in?
23. Nakba Day
SMelmoth   (05.25.09)
Anyone who celebrates Nakba Day should have his bituah leumi and kupat holim rights revoked. Let the Arab states support them and deal with their health problems. No money for children, no money for the aged, let them pay full price for drugs and then see how much they hate Israel. They will crawl back with their tails between their legs. Dollars and cents, or rather, shekels and agurot, and then we will see principled and self righteous they are. Anyone ever hear of Philip Nolan, by Edward Everett Hale? Let's see who picks them up.
24. Naqba
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (05.25.09)
Naqba day is a protest against whom ? Israel who eccepted the partition plan in 1947, or the Arabs who rejected the partition plan offered by the United Nations. How about sombody losing his money in atlantic city, and than complaining bitterly, demanding,to be compensated for his loss.
25. The Nakba was caused by Wicked Arab Leaders
Sam ,   Miami Florida   (05.25.09)
I hope that the Arabs will point their fingers at the real cause of their troubles, which are their wicked self serving leaders. Please see the enclosed documents which are related to the origin of the Arab refugees problems. The Origins of the “Refuge” problem --- At Aish.com you can read one of the best summaries of the “Refugee” problem in the Middle East. 26. Omar from Haifa is right
Jonathan Kadmon ,   New Orleans, USA   (05.26.09)
Forgetting the fact that it is, like it or not antidemocratic, and that part of living in a democracy means you have to deal with hearing people say things that make you angry, Omar from Haifa is correct. Its also the height of hypocrisy. I'm as pro-Israel as they come, but as Jews of all people we should be the very LAST people advocating or supporting people like this. How quickly we forget where we came from, and where we've been for nearly two millenia before the reestablishment of the State of Israel. Try coming back to the diaspora, and perhaps going someplace other than the US (like someplace in eastern europe for instance) and see how well holocaust memorial day goes over there.
27. What would Tommy Lapid have thought?
Arn ,   Yehud, Israel   (05.30.09)
If, before translating his thoughts into words, Yair would have given thought to what his father's opinion would have been on this issue, his own ill-considered position would have been greatly tempered. For a moment I thought of comparing Yair to Avraham, that degenerate son of Yoseph Burg. It was just a thought that quickly dissipated - I pray never to return.
28. 25 The Zionist version of the Palestinian Exodus is a myth
lydia ,   Brisbane   (05.31.09)
" If the Zionists could show that the refugees had really fled without cause, at the express instructions of their own politicians, they would greatly erode the world's sympathy for their plight - "I gathered all of the Jewish mukhtars, who have contact with Arabs in different villages and asked them to whisper in the ears of some Arabs that a great Jewish reinforcement has arrived in Galilée and that it is going to burn all of the villages of the Huleh. They should suggest to these Arabs, as their friends, to escape while there is still time... The tactic reached its goal completely. The building of the police station at Halsa fell into our hands without a shot. The wide areas were cleaned..."—Yigal Allon, Ha Sepher Ha Palmach, Vol. 2, p. 268, 1948 "...as uncontrolled panic spread through all Arab quarters, the Israelis brought up jeeps with loudspeakers which broadcast recorded 'horror sounds'. These included shrieks, wails and anguished moans of Arab women, the wail of sirens and the clang of fire-alarm bells, interrupted by a sepulchral voice calling out in Arabic: "Save your souls, all ye faithful: The Jews are using poison gas and atomic weapons. Run for your lives in the name of Allah'." —Leo Heiman, Israeli Army Reserve Officer who fought in 1948.
29. Israel should recognise the Nakba
Abe ,   London, UK   (03.18.10)
If Israel commemorates her fallen on Yizkor, surely she should acknowledge and apologise for the horrific displacement of the indigenous people of Palestine, the destruction of over 500 of their towns and villages, creating thousands of Palestinian refugees, and their land and possessions taken to establish the Zionist State? To ban them form commemorating this catastrophe and loss is the height of repression and insensitivity, and does nothing to reduce the hatred or heal the losses they have suffered. The Palestinians are Israel's closest neighbours and you will have to learn to live in peace and acknowledge the injustices and harm inflicted on them. According to the Israeli Declaration of Independence, all citizens are to be treated equally - so why not put that into practice?
