2. Tevye's prayers answered !!
Chaim ,   Jerusalem   (05.31.09)
Tevye sings "If I were a rich man" and he then overhears his daughters singing "matchmaker-matchmaker" and gets an idea that makes him rich....he becomes a shadchan and makes $10,000 a pop!
3. I as a Shadchan in NY
Fortune ,   Brooklyn NY   (06.01.09)
Do not charge for making a shidduch. I have received gifts such as oriental rugs, gold necklace, paintings, and of money. But I never asked for any specific amount. It is MY MITZVAH, and up to the couple to decide what to give.
4. #1 Jane Autstin well explained this in "Pride and Prejudice"
Ibrahim ,   Казань RUSSIA   (06.01.09)
The point of matchmaking is how to find good husband for bad daughter. There are many Muslim girls in the West even going trice to the bar but matchmaker is trying to find "pious, educated and rich husband" for them. I'm sure the same thing is with the Jewish girls, if I'm wrong just check out the rate of divorce..
5. $1300 is cheap compared to the cost of a divorce from the

woman you met in a bar. Lets just hope that the parents get a refund or a credit towards the next match if the marriage doesn't work out.
6. The Prophet Jeremiah said the old paths are the good way.

Finding the right wife for the right man is worth the price. The problem with dating when the object of the other person is unknown is that even a kiss is a covenant to the Lord according to Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldean Lexicon. Breaking an engagement is equivalent to breaking a marriage since to the Lord, an engagement is as binding as a marriage. A broken engagement or a divorce make the pair unsuitable for remarriage during the lifetime of the first spouse or fiancee. Why? Because Rabbi Yeshua said in Luke 16:18 in the Hebraic Roots Version Bible that "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and everyone who marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery." So you begin to see how important it is to skip dating and go to a matchmaker for the protection from broken engagements and divorce in unsuitably matched couples that brand the people for life and make remarriage a sin until the death of the first spouse or fiancee. Rabbi Yeshua was more stringent than the Apostle Paul who said desertion was grounds for divorce, too. But Rabbi Yeshua did not give that as a valid reason to end a marriage. Tami Arad is a shining example of loyalty to a marriage vow until there is evidence her husband Ron Arad is dead. She should be given a medal as a hero of Israel. Many POW/MIA American wives have had their husband declared dead after seven years to remarry. Tami Arad is golden. There is no other way to describe her.
7. 1 Irmo: That sounds like a male advantage situation to me...
Rivkah   (06.01.09)
no strings or obligations: just a setting with alcohol for a seduction or pretend interest to stain the reputation and/or being of a female who needs to be protected and have assurance the male is interested in marriage. Matchmakers are a better deal for the female than meeting a male in a bar who has little interest in providing for the woman. King David provided for women he seduced or married or raped because he knew that if he did not provide for his own, he was worse than the heathen. The way for a woman to know a male is interested in marriage is for him to propose to her before he ever touches her hand or kisses her. The kiss is the seal of the covenant of engagement. Check out the word kiss and the word covenant in Gesenius' Hebrew Lexicon in the index. Sounds to me like an engagement is as binding as a marriage, but who wants to marry a woman who is tainted from being kissed by a multitude or worse, seduced and abandoned?
8. Is your wife/husband worth 1300$ ?
Michael ,   Jerusalem   (06.01.09)
probably more than that ...
9. Rip-off and so outdated!

What an easy way to make money. A couple of phone calls and CHING CHING!! Get a real job!!
10. You choose how to meet a partner
Israeli grandmother   (06.01.09)
Ultra-Orthodox and other traditional Jews young men and women do not mix freely at social occasions so they need the services of a go-between. A Shadchan has detailed knowledge and can give prospective families far better relevant information than can a hiloni couple dependent on the conversations (including lies!) they share, often confused by sexual connection early in the relationship. Everyone is used to paying Real Estate Agents for finding and showing apartments, it is reasonable to pay for the services of a matchmaker. The market price is another matter.

Why dont you take your MEAN spirit and shove it in a pint of Guinness. Maybe you'll hate yourself less!
14. Cheap is expensive..1300 for a match is a steal
Al   (06.01.09)
I paid nothing for a nothing shidduch and it cost me a small fortune to get rid of it. Boys when it comes to finding a wife..pay the piper and look for quality. Cheap is very expensive in time and money.
15. #13 what's your problem?
Talula ,   Israel   (06.01.09)
Ahhhhh I see now. You've just been stung for $1300 and you're not happy with the goods. HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! Ah thank god for the Haredim - always a good laugh.
16. #15 my problem?
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (06.01.09)
Is your mean spirited hatred for anything religious or that doesnt agree with you. Maybe you need a $1300 shadchanit to find you a guy. You seem very frustrated, angry mean and bitter. Maybe you gf needs a strap on.
17. $ 1300
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.01.09)
Does it come with a guarantee ?.
18. #16 is very hung up about something
Talula ,   Israel   (06.01.09)
It sounds like frustration to me. I don't actually remember attacking you in a nasty way - shame, I wish I had now. Still, I always say it's never too late. See, your problem, so it appears, is that you seem very frustrated and it pisses you off no end that others are living a full and happy life and have it so much better than you, with sex on tap and all the other lovely things that come with a warm loving relationship and look, poor old you, you can't get it off the ground - not even when you pay $1300 for the pleasure. Yep! it would piss me off as well. Childish and crass comments about a “strap-on” also stems from sexual frustration on some level. I didn’t even know what they are. Lucky my partner carries a full lunch-box, maybe that’s why. Anyhow, to be fair I understand that you are angry at having to cough-up$1300 to meet someone – when most of us meet people……………. for free. Nevermind though, I'm sure you'll find someone - whether or not they'll stick around is anyone's guess. I'm betting that..................No, no they won't I think we're done here now.
19. #16 Talula make you angry hehehe

20. Matchmaking works
Gila ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.01.09)
I went to more than one matchmaker and met quite a few men, before I was set up by an unofficial shadchanit and met the one I married and with whom I am very happy. As a religious woman and one who has come into the orthodox world as a middle aged person, personally I have found the whole system invaluable. There are some single men out there, all the more so once you hit a certain age, who cannot commit and who will otherwise cause considerable emotional harm to a marriage-minded woman who is looking for a like-minded man. Keeping shomer negiah and dating purely for marriage, while still an emotional rollercoaster, cuts out a lot of the huge hurt, damage and sense of feeling used from broken relationships. Matchmakers do much more than simply introduce people. They do background checks, help with the dating process, and have to accept that most of their introductions will not lead to a marriage between a particular set of two people. Some people make their livings this way and have the right to charge what they feel is fair - they put a lot of work into trying to match suitable people and often those looking go to several shadhanim to up their chances of finding their bashert - although at the same time it shouldn't necessarily be standard for all matchmakers as the person who wrote comment no 3 said.

Why dont you learn proper english. you sound like Tarzan the ape man. "Talulah make you angry" THE PROPER IS "MAKES YOU ANGRY". And no she doesnt make me angry I just think she is out of line on religion and needs to rethink her backwards archaic hatred.
22. #9: what about real estate brokers?
david ,   new york   (06.02.09)
a real estate broker sells a $500,000 home and gets 3% (assuming that he splits the commission). That's $15,000 for not much work. in any case, i don't think its good for shadchanim to get a commission. I think it is better that they do it for free or perhaps get paid a salary from a non-profit foundation. To be given a wad of cash for what should be god's work is unseemly.
23. For your information: that is still a relatively

low price. Many years ago a rabbi from the Satmar group tried to convince my family to agree to a shiduh for me for the "modest " price of a 2 room luxury apartment in north Tel-Aviv... They are not greedy at all...

So, what you are essentially saying is, unless you buy a husband or wife for $1300 everyone else is a hooker? You must have eaten an extra bowl of stupid this morning.
