Jerusalem: Seculars protest decision to close parking lot on Shabbat    Ronen Medzini
1. Meretz draws "crowd" of 200
The rally, organized by meretz, shows the full level of support the extreme pro-hamas parties have left in a revitalized rejuvenated country. They are seeking to make an issue where there is none, HOPING to garnish some attention, which Yediot is happy to give them. As a secular Jew, permit me to remind the meretz and hamass leadership: you hold no sway any longer in our Jewish State. Perhaps the leaders of meretz, together with the UAL,and hadash, can show openly who they REALLY support and go join haniyeh hiding in his roach hole.

2. Did'nt he do it after a recommandation of the police ?
This is what i heard . The head of Jerusalem's police , Franco , told the mayor it would be better to hold this lot closed . Discussions with those anti Israeli charidim ? they said : no compromise . So , Mr Franco , You know what to do . Let them see who is in command here , anti Israeli violent guys , who call you nazis , or you who represents the state . With all the power you have , the same you would use against other rioters .

3. Jerusalem
What is there to say? Yet again Haredi violence brings us closer to becoming Bnei Brak ll.

4. Was it Barkat or Bibi Netayahu?
Barkat is a Likudnik and the Likud boss is our one and only Bibi! who relies on the Ultra Orthodox for his coalition to stay in power. Did he perhaps "point" this out to Mayor Barkat? As for the Police, well aren't they supposed to maintain law and order and ensure that the laws of this country are enforced? I am joking of course as the Israeli Police would no what Law and Order are!

5. Jerusalem
is a doomed city. It is a simple calculation. The young secular leave because of the Haredim and their coercive policies and activities. No young folks means no natural growth. The Haredim, on the other hand, have enormous families. Common sense, a basic understanding of maths and the conclusion is obvious. They will win hands down. I do not really care except for the fact that we shall all have a city resembling a dung heap for our Capital. There is no solution because it is impossible to conduct a dialogue with these people. In fact the word dialogue is unknown to them, while monologue is a word which they hold in reverence.

6. Sheer Stupidity
The whole world laughs at you: *segregated buses, *closed parking lots on Saturdays, *ambulance drivers who use toothpicks held between their teeth to operate mobile phones *El Al This is a race of people who claim they are intelligent ???
(06.13.09)
7. 4 , a likudnik ???
in his list of the candidates for the mayoral elections , there are two likudnikim , one avoda , one Kadima [ this for the 7 first places ] and three not affiliated , amongst them Barkat himself . Never does he say that he is a Likudnik . Your references please if i'm wrong .

8. actually
Actually Barkat most likely won because a large section of Charedi voters voted for him on orders from the rabbis (Ger etc.) and many more modern charedi and dati did not want another charedi mayor as it reflected badly on the religious...

9. #5 Just give it up quietly-a simple solution
Jerusalem is the God given capital of the Palestinian people, and the Godfearing peoples of the world-not the jews!
(06.13.09)
10. Those who say there is no God are fools, King Solomon said.
It is foolish to NOT fear the wrath of those who DO obey God and who DO fear God and who DO follow His laws as best they can.

11. Yes , very intelligent . The 9th most innovative
With the most books edited [ per capita ] the most engineers per 1000 employees , etc etc . Not to talk about the thousands of start ups . Do you at least know where Israel Is ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.13.09)
12. @ 10 I honestly have great sympathy
for you and others like yourself. God is an invention of man. Fools believe religion is wise. The wise believe it is foolish. Politicians believe it to be useful. I personally believe it to be revolting in all its aspects.

13. Kol Hakavod to the Mayor!
(06.14.09)
14. Barakat isn't a bull in a china shop
This is a show of muscle which Barakat will find a solution for. Opening a parking lot is a legitimate cause for protest. Better to have the cars going to an underground lot than to have people going into the neighborhoods to park. Jerusalem is a multicultural city and can't be run either black or white. BTW, I also read that Franco told Barakat to close the lot this past Shabbat. The people protesting have a vested interest in conflict.

15. So let's move
the capital to Tel-Aviv. We can have two capitals. We're the only Jewish country so why not be the only country with two capital's. One "spiritual" aka Jerusalem and the other administrative, political, cultural, and diplomatic (and ultimately, functional) Tel-Aviv. Everyone is happy.

16. #2 I heard the same thing about a request from the police.
Supposedly District Police Chief Aharon Franco sent a document to the mayor, saying that access to the Old City was clogged up with cars during the weekend and that it was impossible for police and rescue service cars to cross. With the security status in the city being as bad as it is, he said, a parking lot should be opened to accommodate people who parked their cars in the city on the weekends. The Safra parking lot was chosen as one of three available choices, and Barkat then went to meet with ultra-Orthodox community leaders to try and pave the way for the opening smoothly. He went in with a police representative, the head of Jerusalem's traffic unit, as backup (don't remember his name, I'm afraid). But apparently, not everyone agrees with Franco within the police - instead of supporting Franco's request to Barkat, the head of the police traffic unit said he saw no reason whatsoever to open the parking lot. And as Franco didn't bother with actually sending an official documented police security request along, the ultra-Orthodox community leaders saw no reason to buy Barkat's version of the events. As it stands, it's possible that Barkat brought up the matter of parking in the city to serve his secular voting base, tried to find a security justification for it and asked for a police review of it, and then didn't quite go ahead as planned. As it stands, Franco was the one who demanded that Barkat close the Safra parking lot now. The above information is from an article published in the Mishpacha weekly newspaper, which caters to an ultra-Orthodox readership. I'll wait and see what happens next, personally.
