2. Some service to G-d, some to the IDF, this is good.
Options are valuable and if this helps than tanks to the person or group that developed it. Nowhere else in the world iis there a country that recognizes the need of young men and women like Israel.

4. It's about time.
Alot of people overseas, and some in Israel, don't realise how little time they actual serve in the ARMY.
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (06.18.09)
5. Tel Aviv - take note!
It's time for secular Israel to wake up and pick up their slack. The number of draft dodgers and exemptions from IDF service from the secular community is embarrassing. Once upon a time, it was the secular kibbutzniks who led the army - now it's the religious Hesder grads who have a sound grounding in education and religion, and who firmly believe in their country. Meretz and Labor - get off your butts before you disappear into anonymity and history! Go back to the basics and inspire your next generations before they bury you and move to Los Angeles and New York. The national religious camp wants you to participate in the country, not abandon it! Face it, secular humanism just isn't working anymore and you need something else. Ok, you don't have to become religious, but instead of looking to a beer bottle and a fashion magazine for your inspiration, come back to the good Book. It's still valid and still inspires - start more secular kollels, get your kids off the streets and into some kind of youth movement, and make sure you impress upon them the value of national service and participation in Israeli society.

please, for the mercy of god, DO NOT EVER COMPARE ISLAM TO JUDAISM. you can't even find a section in your violent theology to compare it to the judaic tradition of peace, brotherhood, justice, liberty and love of life and harmony. next, look at your koran, how can you compare this vile war momger ideology to judaism that gave the world's religions (except for yours, of course) a better understanding of man, the pursuit of freedom, of knowledge, of debate, of sciences, of harmony and respect for life, of laws imbeded with freedom and justice for all. please study the torah and judaism before you even begin to make this false connection of jewish laws to islamic laws and ideology. everything in your koran is AL HARB against anyone that is not you. judaism accepts them all and there is freedom of thought and action. hameed aboughaze

7. IDF Is Not a Jewish Army
B"H Israel's army is not a Jewish army. It is the only regular army in the world at present that is involved with destruction of homes because they are Jewish and beit midrashim and synagogues. Closing an eye or looking elsewhere does not help. The problem of the IDF is not only a technical one, as some wants us to believe, rather it is ethical and religious. A Jewish army would not harrass Jews. The Israeli army does.

8. Unifying army service to promote Israel’s unity
Unifying army service to promote Israel’s unity Change of army service for “…Hesder units…” is difficult to accept under a equality system of all citizens being treated alike. Practically the army budget here is paying for two years on Hesder arrangement for a full two years army service. This versus the 3 years compulsory army service of non Hesder.- Citizen could get by their own initiative after army service any religious interpretating / teaching available on a extremely wide scale. This is partially due to the multi, multi official and separate school itineraries – But this extra separate unit army service arrangement is in its outcome a political or even party political act with its diametric to any united, apolitical army. Here we face another separatist trend within the to be all embracing army which goes even deeper by many of the daily religious routines / special arrangement for the religious sector of the State of Israel, of near between 20 to 25% only.- Their shouldn’t be any question to the army providing basic religious requirements for its soldiers, without any special / extra / sectional demands by the many sectional religious demands for i.e. different sized, color and form of the “…kipa…” to demonstrate the individual affiliation.- The army present a mirror like pictures of Israel’s mixed population in all its varieties, believes and religions and its meant to serve as an additional unifying factor independent of political social religious economic differences.- Israel’s army like all army’s in the world should respect religious orientations believes of its citizens on their private level which exclude any outwardly signs of possible differential opinions / believes / religions specially as in IDF druses Bedouin, non Jews of various origin serve together. Consequently army discipline should insist / observe complete official IDF uniforms including its army type headgear protecting against uncovered / sun exposed head etc. IDF dress provides a uniformed head cover so the question of various kappis no longer exist- Normal religious, kosher food rules should be maintained to guard personal believes. In general a some thought of “…fist rule…” should be the only acceptable approach for this so various, separately interpreted rules of religious observations. This would be influential on all strata of Israel’s daily life and help to create by mutual respect a feeling of belonging together atleast for the beginning for all uniform wearing soldiers, policemen etc. to “…infiltrate…” to all levels.

Such as, Shilo and Maale Giboa: http://www.maalegilboa.org/ensite/ I think also, Yeshivat Ateret Kohanim http://www.ateret.org.il/

11. Anyway, the real part of the army already is optional!
Anyone who doesn't want to be in a kravi (combat) unit does not end up in one. Many of the people in the army choose to be jobnickim. Aprox. 98% of the people in Hesder yeshivot serve in Combat units. I hope that one day they make the army optional so that motivated people, like Hesdernickim (Hesder students) and religious zionists who go to mechinot, will take over the army! One benefit will be that the army won't be able to be used to destroy Jewish property and enforce anti-Zionist policies. btw, I don't really think that kravi units are the only "real" part of the army. However, they are one of the most important parts. Immense gratitude is also due to all the engineers and scientists working on technology in order to protect Israel.

You said, "Judaism accepts them all and there is freedom of thought and action." This is a beautiful ideology. It is true of TRUE TORAH JUDAISM, but sadly it is difficult to find. I, as a Messianic have experienced a lot of hatred and insults from Jews who hate Messianics. This does not speak well of your ideology of freedom of thought and acceptance. Of course, there is forgiveness in my heart and I do my best to bless them. May they indeed be blessed.

Are these guys kidding?! This is Israel, and you don't skimp on prayer. We Jews live on prayer! The whole family here prays every day! You don't stop praying for anything! Ever!

14. In opposition to Michael (#11):
Amongst the best current soldiers in the IDF also include the children of the new generation of Russian immigrants, most of whom are secular. They tend to be hardnosed and very committed. I am extremely appreciative of their efforts and would not like to have an IDF without their contributions. In addition, the second generation of Ethiopian immigrants are making their names known on behalf of our country. I do not know to what extent they are religious/secular, however. Then we must commend the young Druse, fierce fighters on behalf of Eretz Yisrael, a respect that they have certainly earned. If they are religious, it is certainly not the religion of us Jews which they follow. Finally, we should also recognize the Bedouin, the finest trackers in the IDF. They, of course, are also not Jewish. The point I am making is that the IDF comprises many segments of its citizenry. The fact that religious yeshiva youths (the settler orthodox excepted as they have continued to be serious components of our armed forces) is notable. The downturn in the economy is one reason for increasing numbers of these yeshiva youth to join; there may be a recognition that their religious education has made it all but impossible for them to earn a decent living as adults. The IDF, for its part, is probably becoming more flexible in order to make it possible for the religious youth to join, i.e., no supervision from female superiors. These changes all bode well for the future of our country. Sadly, we still allow the elite from Tel Aviv with the flimsiest excuses to escape active duty but I believe the IDF is incorporating its own personnel, i.e., psychologists and psychiatrists, to assess them. There was something obscene to have had a prime minister, Ehad Olmert, whose sons and daughters were allowed not to participate in the IDF while so many other Israeli youths risked their lives to protect us in Lebanon and Gaza. In addition, I've read where female Israelis, who up until now have misused the "religious" ticket to escape duty, are now being stringently assessed. For those who do not do military service, national service of another kind which also contributes to society should be compelled. As our foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman indicated, "No national insurance without national service." This principle should definitely apply also and especially to our 20% Palestinian Arab population who have been so used to condemning us (Jewish Israelis) while taking advantage of a free ride and offering little or nothing to society-at-large.

16. #12. certain things are not to be tolerated
such as the perversion that you call your religion. If everything is to be tolerated where does the line of right and wrong get drawn? I am against you. Ihave no problem saying this and dont EVER preach your filth to me or any other REAL Jew again!!!! be carefull. right now you are on your way to purgatory
aharon ,   LA   (06.18.09)
17. Absolutely
All jews need to do martial arts, learn weapons usage or do supportive work. Torah does not and did not save jews from pogrommes.Enough exemptions, haredi have to go into military or paramilitary training. we don't want to continue producing the weak jew to be pitied, or olmerts, ones who run away from their army service and never do combat. You know what they then do-what olmert did, offered 93.5% of west bann, E. Jerusalem, golan, land corridor from gaza to west bank, 5.5% israel land swap. What did he get in return--8000 missiles from gaza, dead bodies from hezbollah, no respect from the world. Do not produce any more olmerts. Military training please-do it!

How surprised you will be when you discovery that as Isaiah said, in the last days you will discover that your fathers have lied to you. One other little detail. To call my belief in HaMashiach as detailed in Torah, Prophets and Writings a perversion, is a chillul HaShem. I hate to think of where you are in danger of ending up. Outside the Kingdom is not going to be pleasant.

Like many others, you are confusing Haredi yeshivot with national religious yeshivot. These young men attended high school yeshivot where they learned religious as well as secular subjects. They have a Bagrut in Bible and Gemara, as well as math and English. Unlike other high school students, they sat in classes until 6 or 7:00 PM in order to learn all the subjects.(I know because I taught English in some of these yeshivot) After higher level yeshivah and army service many of them go on to college. Usually, they go to a yeshivah after high school in order to "streghnthen" themselves so that they can withstand the secular pressures in the army. Only some of the weakest pupils don't go to yeshivah. Now they will have a program. Just because a person wasn't born with a high IQ doesn't make them less deserving. I think this is great.

Our Bible is very violent. Have you seen the program recently on the History channel called Bible Battles? Well, if we did today what Joshua did they would call it genocide and ethnic cleansing. After I saw that program I read the Book of Joshua again and confirmed that it was all true. Fortunatley, we don't do today what was acceptable thousands of years ago. Maybe that's the difference between us and the Islamofacists.

I don't hate you, but I do beleve that you are misguided. I used to know a rabbi who told people, look into your own religion first, before you go looking into others. You may be a Jew but the religion you are pracising is not Judaism. You should google two websites and read them very carefullyl. One is Outreach Judaism and the other is Jews for Judaism. If you call them, the Jews for Judaism people will come to talk to you. Unfortunately, the messianics and Jews for J are successful with Jews who lack a Jewish education. People who know the Bible and Hebrew can never get caught up in that because they know what the Bible really says, they understand the Christian mistranslations. We wrote the Bible. We don't need others to tell us what it says.

Rather than cursing our Jewish brothers who have been led astray into avoda zara(idol worship), wouldn't it be more productive for you to give a donation to Jews for Judaism, so that they can continue their work of bringing our people back to our religion?

25. Jewish Dhimmitude
Jewish law does permit some non-Jews to reside in the land of Israel under certain conditions, which can be summed up thus–”must pay taxes and accept suffering, humiliation and servitude” as expressed by Mordechai Nisan of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem who relied upon the law of Maimonides which demands that a non-Jew be held down, that he not raise his head against Jews.

29. Re: #14 There is no arguement... except one
1) "here may be a recognition that their religious education has made it all but impossible for them to earn a decent living as adults" I had a religious education, and I'm in computer science (and getting B's and A's while the averages are always in the 60s. My Dad is an Aerospace engineer and also has a degree in Applied Math. I had a physics prof. who was clearly a religious Jew with a large white beard. He was an expert in black holes like thirty-forty years ago. Furthermore, there are very many former Hesder students living very nicely. AIso, I know that in Toronto students of religious zionist schools do far better than standard in there earnings... Perhaps part of this is because they have to since here they spend $15,000/year per kid in elementary/high school. But, I doubt that that's the main reason. The main reason is because they learn to like learning. Therefore, they do well in University, and in life. 2) The army should either be fully obligatory for everyone (for three years), or fully optional for everyone. While it is not fully obligatory, people should stop looking down on chareidim for not joining. I suspect secular Jews would have a similar percentage in the army if it was made optional for them. One of the reasons why it is still not obligatory for all is because of the stupid system of government in Israel which makes it so that the interests of smaller groups become of major importance in order to form coalitions. 3) I support the army being fully optional. My opinion was certainly influenced by Moshe Feiglin: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Articles/Article.aspx/8819 4) I never said that the other groups do not make good contributions, however, the religious zionist group's contribution is way further out of proportion: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/123492 The reason is that they are simply the most motivated. Also, their leaders have or have had good positions in the army: Rav Aviner - currently a segen in the reserves Rav Ronen Neuwirth - was a Seren (captain) in THE Shayetet 13 Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren - Aluf (general) Rav Yuval Cherlow - Rav Seren (Major) in tanks Maj. Gen. Stern MK Yehuda Katz - was an officer in Sayeret Shaked
