I would add that in rioting thus the Orthodox only perpetuate the belief among secular Iszraelis that they are intolorant and anti-zionist, caring more for the Torah than the peace and prosperity of Israel. If this is so than they should lose their citizenship just like anti-zionist Israeli Arabs, if it is not, and I believe, your words that it is not, then they must legitimize those words with actions
2. Choose???

Choose Barkat? For what? Fence-sitting? The mayor represents the city, the entire city. His actions fail to satisfy anyone; while actually fail miserably to uphold the law. To ignore threats of arson by rioters permits them in essense to dictate to the residents of Jerusalem how they must live. Mayor Barkat, the rioters will first destroy Jerusalem; then the nation.

You are all foolishly wrong. This is not really about Shabbat, it is about feeling abandoned. For the past few years, these groups felt like they were understood in the the municipality. Along comes the new guy and promises to the secular groups that they will be heard. The first thing that happens is a sign to the ultra-orthodox how the left will be heard.... a slap in the face to the ultra- ortthodox. Yes, they have been abandoned by the municipality. All they really want is to feel understood, accepted (Yes!). If Barkat is the mayor for ALL Jerusalemites, he would give everyone the feeling that they are being heard. This parking lot is a poor choice to pit secular vs religious. Close the parking lot to show he cares, encourage some cultural events in Kiryat Yovel to show he cares about the left.

6. Religious fundamentalism

is rearing it's ugly head once again. In addition to riots, throwing rocks and seriously injuring people, now threats are being leveled at Jerusalem's mayor. The religious caused the death of PM Rabin. Will there be a duplication; this time the mayor of Jerusalem the victim???
