1. No Neocon = Confused
Fred Gaffney ,   Nicosia, Cyprus   (06.29.09)
Pathetic piece of nonsense from this uhm.... "researcher".
2. Alpha-male Israeli on "Jewish Thinking"
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv   (06.29.09)
The self-deception of this so called thinker is amazing and can only be justified by someone imbued with the neo-conservative attitudes of sheer force as the only way forward. This is blind muscle man alpha male primitivism, the kind of unsophisticated approach to life, the world, the region and to Israel's future that spells doom. It is denial on a grand scale and that at its conclusion the writer admits he actually has no answer makes one ask, why publish this in the first place?
3. Good stuff!
The Other Ron ,   Pittsburgh USA   (06.29.09)
I enjoyed this editorial. Our president does not seem to understand the extent of Iran's reach as a sponsor of terrorism. Altshuler's writing appears to be right on.
4. strong article
Phepps ,   Netanya   (06.29.09)
I'm just not sure Bush, esp. in his 2nd term, would have done that much to help the Iranian rebellion. Sending soldiers from Iraq is very dubious. He would at least have done better than Obama, though. As for why Obama is the way he is, does not seem to stick up for American values, treats Israel much more antagonistically than he treats Iran or North Korea--perhaps his background holds some clues? Would you go to a house of worship for 20 years where the head cleric was a ranting racist and hate-monger? And that's just for starters.
5. What the hell is he talking about
Frank ,   Israel   (06.29.09)
sure they may wish for some sort of democracy, but they are certainly not going to give up their basic desire for nuclear arms. The opposition is not against nuclear, not for the US, hates Israel, but the US is not supporting them. Hell the US wants the iran situation to continue. How else can he justify punishing israel for being the "aggressor" . It has nothing to do with iran who the US is deeply and sincerely afraid of, but rather this is an act against Israel and a play toward helping arabs, his brothers, because they are afraid of standing up for democracy. Standard american policy, they never, ever support the good guys, look all over the world at their support. They support hamas and hizballa by offering aid and recognition. They are putting money into Gaza, which is controlled by the US labled terrorist organization, Hamas, this is in complete contravention of international law...but remember the US doesn't like something, they change the rules, hold Israel accountable, and places blame. obama is simply re-writing history to fit his situation. What did he say/do about korea, africa, china invading tibet, world hunger....nothing....Israel is building....how terrible, put extra pressure. He can control us but not his own problems. How typical of the US. Can't fix your own house, start tearing down ours....cowards.....simply cowards and liars.....
6. Wrong - it took years to build the Khomeni revolution....
(06.29.09)
this is only the first crack in its fall. It must come from within. The US has a long pre-Shah history in oppressing the Iranian people like the overthrow of Reza Shah. The US is better serving the people of Iran by letting it happen and, like Obama has done, condeming the ruthlessness of the regime. And collapse it will.
7. Obama
Leon ,   Grand Rapids USA   (06.29.09)
His world-view is troubling. He sees Islam as just another religion, and doesn't seem to understand the impetus driving it. And, foolishly, he believes that he can change the minds of those with whom he disagrees by talking to them.
8. The confused Barak Obama
Harold ,   Liverpool USA   (06.29.09)
Mr. Obama was raised differently than George W. Bush. He is not a Cowboy but he is a non voilent President. Bush's brain was damaged by alchohol and he did whatever others asked him to do.
9. Simple folk in Palestine also want their freedom
Eric ,   Jhb SA   (06.29.09)
but have to face IAF F16s bombs, IDF sniper bullets, daily humiliation at checkposts. So Altshuler, you cannot talk as if you and your israeli regime have the moral high ground by exaggerating what's happening in Iran.
10. to #8 you wrong
ghostq   (06.29.09)
he act like president Willson, by trying to be friends with other totalitarian entities, it's going to come to USA like bomrang, his lack of judgment in many areas is amazing, simple example of that is MJ condolences, he really gave respect to someone who overdosed you know what that means, it means it's ok to overdose you can get president sympathy. incoraging druge abuse is what he did. and one of many errors, also making jokes on GM and AIG, and nibbling in the free market, how many companies the federals control now because of obama policy, It won't be a shocker when he will try to controll the media as well. and the forign activity is non he just talk, he did nothin in Iran case what was he waiting for that the dead catualties will rise, is atending father day is more important than innnocent Iranian killed, people asked Biden 3 weeks ago what's USA is going to do about Iran, he kept his silence. so wake up cause obama is abusing your democracy.
11. Hypocrisy of Zionists again
Tarik ,   Boston, MA USA   (06.29.09)
I've had about enough of Zionists claiming to sympathize with Iranian protesters who are suffering this repression. Somehow, Israeli sympathy with Iranians didn't prevent Israel from allying itself with the Shah until his exile in 1979. Israel's secret service even trained the brutal SAVAK secret police which terrorized Iranians. And now Israelis claim they believe in freedom for Iran? And Israelis are now invoking the right to non-violent protest. Are Israelis aware that their own army attacks non-violent protesters in a much more brutal and violent manner every week? It takes quite a lot of hypocrisy to find fault with repression hundreds of miles away, when right across the Green Line Israeli soldiers are carrying out worse repressions. Israelis should recognize that whatever horror they feel upon seeing the repression in Iran is exactly what the rest of the world feels when they see Israel's brutal repression in the occupied territories.
12. Confused hell
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.29.09)
He is doing exactly what he wants for his own reasons. This is the most dangerous and stupid president since Jimmy the Cracker Carter. Obumba is going to have the entire world in flames. I for one refuse to die for his stupidity and racism.
13. to #11 lol the brits were the
ghostq   (06.29.09)
one to gave refuge to what left of the shaha family, so what's your point, I don't hear you complain to the brits, non-violent protesters, lmfao right, where r the permits for demonstration? you can get thos by apllying request, oh non of the protesters had any, so try again palis r known for violent rallies especially when they send 13 years old children to hurl stones.
14. To #2
Frank ,   Canada   (06.29.09)
Your pseudo-scientific and psychologic argument is only a false pretext to cowardly surrender to radical Islam. Unlike unjustify surrender, fighting ennemies is not a mental disease.
15. Unfathomable
Adam T ,   Arizona   (06.29.09)
the crisis Iran is facing is unfathomable and so is the reaction of this op-ed writer..... If Obama were to take measures in support of the uprising without committing military resources to provide for the defense of the unarmed protestors he would have blood on his hands, since it IS fathomable that any outspoken support for the uprising without committing military resources would certainly lead to increased bloodshed and criticism for half measures. I as much as anyone wants to see Iran's regime fall, but in the mean time the populist uprising is taking that nations attention away from terrorist activities and it is not within the means of the US to commit to a 3rd war at this time. be reasonable
16. Very clear and concise analysis
David Masada ,   Orlando, USA   (06.29.09)
The new US President is confused at best, most likely dishonest and Manchurian at worst!
17. #8 - Bush's brain damaged by alcohol?
Netanel   (06.29.09)
In that case, Obama's brain was damaged by cocain. He is also addicted to cigarettes. We all know how irrational smokers are, especially those trying to quit. We've got a ticking timebomb in office.
18. No.11 Unpalatable truth...
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv   (06.29.09)
but truth nonetheless. What in fact is the difference between Iranian government repression and that of Israel in the W Bank? Is it somehow more humane? Is it less repressive? How is it justified - because ALL Palestinians are terrorists? Or less than Israelis because they aren't Jews? Because we were once victims and still remember what that was like? Here come the deniers...
19. #11 Tarik re: Hypocracy
Jacob ,   Munich   (06.29.09)
you are right abot the israeli-iranian relation during the Sha-regime. Israel was very interested to have good ties to a big Muslim country. Today not only Israel, but most citizens in the world support the uprising against the current regime. And true, nobody knows how they, if they come to power, will act in respect to Israel. Take note, in a democtrc system people are very hesitant to engage in war rhetoric or even a real, not to mention a nuclear war. If you claim that Israeli soldiers are acting against protesters in the same way as the Iranien government, it is utter nonsense
20. Non-Intervention??
OS ,   Israel   (06.29.09)
Obama is all for America staying out of other country's issues as long as those countries are Islamic - however when it comes to us, Israel, he has no trouble telling us exactly what to do - his support of Islamic, non-democratic regimes - be it Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, or the PA will only lead to the end of Israel - maybe that is what he wants after all - but will he then take all the Jews from Israel and allow them into America??? don't bet on it
21. interesting,all fans of Arbs having 22+1 countries object to
Genuine Tosefta ,   Tveria   (06.29.09)
Iranian people having back their one country or to Jews having one Jewish country in 0.002 of what Arbs already have. It goes hand in hand, supporters of Islamic terrorism supposedly in the name of nationalism, are against freedom, democracy, human rights and national rights for people turning their back to Islam.
22. #8, no one was asking him to bomb Iran
Danny   (06.29.09)
there and then, they were simply suggesting he could have been a bit more vocal supporting people who wanted to change - however slightly - a regime that is indisputably inimical to the US. It can't be that he has an issue "interfering" other countries's internal matters because he hasn't been that shy with Israel. Nor has he toned down the bombing and predator strikes in Pakistan.
23. #6, Reza Shah was a pro-nazi dictator
Danny   (06.29.09)
and Obama hasn't really said anything and the limp-wristed response he has given was only after Congress and the media criticised him. It clearly was something he didn't want to happen because he wanted to keep talking to Ahmadenejad
24. #11, what "non-violent" protesters?
Danny   (06.29.09)
Or is throwing stones and molotovs now "non-violent"?
25. #18, the truth?
Danny   (06.29.09)
Sorry but do you actually live in Tel Aviv? You live throw the sustained suicide bombing campaign? Or closer to the border, through the sustained rockets? I must have missed the bit where the protesters killed the equivalent of 10,000 of the regime.
26. Why is this a surprise?
David ,   Montreal, Canada   (06.29.09)
He was an ineffective senator, has no experience, and (at best) completely wrong gut instincts. That he's a dolt as a president comes as a surprise? Only in America.
27. Actually...
Adam ,   Chicago, USA   (06.29.09)
The President CLEARLY meant that he would not be a tool of Iranian propaganda and manipulation by putting the US at the center of this conflict. What a joke this article is, taking a legitimate issue to be debated and analyzed and instead falling into paranoia and hysteria.
28. #10
Harold ,   Liverpool USA   (06.29.09)
You Zionist, Neocons and pro-Israel pushed George W. Bush to go to war and distroy Iraq. Obama is made of a different fabric and will never listen to people like you. He is respected by the whole world except Israel because he is talking the truth. By the way I am a Republican but voted for Obama because we need CHANGE. GO OBAMA GO.
29. Bush would have done the same
(06.29.09)
30. Unrealistic and morally dubious analysis
French guy ,   Paris   (06.29.09)
1) The "researcher" is trying to make it sound like the Shah's regime was better than the current one. They were both brutal dictatorships. 2) Many leaders condemned the violence firmly, and what good has it done? Unless they act to support the protestors, those are just empty words. In the case of the US, immediately and openly supporting the protestors would have harmed their cause : the regime would have been able to claim that the US are meddling once again in Iran, and the opposition could have lost support. Of course the regime is now accusing the US and Britain, but those claims now sound ridiculous. 3) Most Iranians do NOT want US troops stepping in to defend them, especially since the US and GB organized the 1953 coup. The opposition would lose its legitimacy if it used foreign powers to topple Khameini. Besides, freedom will come from gradual reforms, not from a bloody revolution which will only replace a dictatorship with another. That said : comparing Iran's regime with the Israeli one is outrageous. When did you ever see Israeli troops shooting peaceful protestors???Unless of course you call gun-carrying, stone-throwing crowds "peaceful". Next thing you'll be calling suicide-bombers "peaceful, freedom-yearning idealists". Ridiculous. Israel is a democracy, and Israeli soldiers never target civilians. Civilian deaths always occur by accident, or because the cowards leading Hamas surround themselves with children and women to protect themselves. We call it "human shields".
