It is those who fail to understand that sharing a name and a predominant ethnicity does not make biblical Israel and modern Israel the same state who do not understand Israel's historic roots. Israel is a 150-odd year old colonial project with its roots in modern Jewish reactions to Western antisemitism, not a return of the biblical state. Obama is quite right not to let Israel use the fact that it shares a name with a state that once occupied what are now Palestinian lands to justify taking those lands from their owners.
