1. They didn't pay the usual bribes
Chanalau, Tova ,   London, UK   (07.07.09)
When you are living in a totally evil and corrupt country, If you are not prepared to grease a few palms you will have a tough time. Rabbis do nothing without $$$$$$$s
2. a good reason for civil marriage
Avi ,   Israel   (07.07.09)
Young secular couples should avoid the rabbinute and get married in a ciivl ceremony. Civil mariage is part of any modern civilised democratic country. People should have a choice unfortuenlty they have to do this outside of Israel but the day will come soon when this will be possible and not only can we celebrate the union of this happy couple but also Freedom and Democracy that these people are so afraid of and deny us in the year 2009.
3. the rabbis probably wanted money.
ghostq   (07.07.09)
as always. disgusting.
4. lucky him! for years I am trying to prove that I am
ghostq   (07.07.09)
adopted, but with no so much luck, If he can so can I, I mean genetics can be wrong, right?
5. What is wrong with the Jewish religion
Philippe Delaporte ,   Marseilles , France   (07.07.09)
not to accept somebody who is a jew into the jewish religion. Is the religion of Moses more racist than other religions. It takes somebody to say 3 times that he is a moslem to be a moslem and it takes a visit to any church and an appointment with the priest to be pronounced christian. Rabbis stop this racism , no wonder your sight creates disgust.
6. this is pretty retarded
SR   (07.07.09)
i remember rabanut telling me that my mom's birth certificate is fake and so is mine, so therefore she is not my mother at all!!!!!!!! all this was due to the reason that she was born in Germany after the war and her birth certificate was "unfortunately" very uncommon...
7. they did you a favor!
Ben   (07.07.09)
run while you still can. Marriage is not everything its cracked up to be.
8. When "rabbis" act like petty bureaucrats
rnathans00 ,   Washington, USA   (07.07.09)
Is there something in the Israeli water that seems to produce such an arrogant bunch as are so common in the Chief Rabbinate and Interior Ministry? I had my own experience with such mysterious "evidence" I knew to be without foundation many years ago. It's too bad these petty dictators can't be fired or sued.
9. is this a joke
shamed   (07.07.09)
did the ayatollah decide. we are jews we should be better then this.
10. non issue
eg   (07.07.09)
if in fact the man in question is not adopted a simple blood / DNA test will clear up matters immediately DNA testing is routinely utilized by the most strict Batei Din in the world - including israel & the IDF - to positively identify where no other option is available again .. non issue just another attempt to bash the rabbinate
11. DNA and Y/Y not?
Shimon ,   Cincinnati, USA   (07.07.09)
Why (lol) not simply check his DNA to see if his father is his biological father? Is that too scientific for the rabbinate crowd?
12. SEPERATE STATE & RELIGION NOW
female ,   TA   (07.07.09)
Religion should be practised at home and shouldn't be an issue, if Israel wants to be a real Democracy then the only solution should be a separation of religion & state.... I wish the couple happiness and love....have a great wedding in Prague and enjoy eachother...maybe you should be happy that you can't marry here, they (those ridiculous rabbis are not worth it!!)
13. the son does not belong to his father?
Lisa   (07.07.09)
The couple wanted to do the right thing- they are proof of being Jewish- the Rabbi? he knows what's best? he knows ALL? He is infallible? The nexr rabbi might overturn his decision? Who is playing GOD?
14. father knows best
Miriam   (07.07.09)
You would think the father knows if his son is adopted! what an insult to the father- I wonder where the Rabbi got the information- ? Is his information authentic, or false? It must not matter to the rabbi very much- he has two devoted Jewish people and he is wrecking their life by questioning the heritage and legitimacy of the young man. Playing God again?
15. fake? father or rabbi?
Marc   (07.07.09)
this surely must be one of the weirder stories. Shouldn't the father KNOW if he adopted his son? it is not like adoption is something that happens in 5 minutes- it takes years to get an adoption through in most cases. The father just forgot about it? Maybe the rabbi checked the wrong registry? Is has happened that the name was spelled wrong- it is a fishy story- maybe the rabbi is a fake?
16. ynet is retarded for publishing this
yoni ,   jerusalem   (07.07.09)
I cant believe that ynet is publishing this. The rabanut always has cases like this where they come to a conclusion based on the evidence brought to them and it is disputed by the party. Why is this news? How could ynet be taking a stance on this based on no information and there are disputes all the time why publish this one???
17. Procedures must be followed
observer   (07.07.09)
If there is a suspicion that the documents are forged, that can surely be investigated through official channels. The individual concerned deals with documents of this nature all day every day, and may well have grounds for suspicion. This happens regularly, and sometimes brings to light old secrets people have though long buried. Bringing relatives to verify legal documents is not a very satisfactory manner of solving the problem. Thus, the subject is hardly newsworthy, except of course for the fact that a rabbi is involved.
18. Married in Prague
Ely greenhut ,   Tzfat Israel   (07.07.09)
Which is better, the Rabbis refusal ? or now they are living in sin?
19. natural son or adopted
peter ,   amsterdam NL   (07.07.09)
A standard DNA test could prove/disprove that he's his fathers son. Then the burden of proof of jewishness falls on the parents. A marriage certificate or ketubah should be enough. Chasing this couple away is a not very sensitive.
20. Rabbinate refuses to marry
Marlene ,   Israel   (07.07.09)
This is disgraceful, how many people from Russia or other countries who have no documents or have no Jewish knowlede have been accepted into the country. Take this rabbi to court - the rabbinate has too much authority - no wonder people are leaving Judaism.
21. "Living in sin sounds so much better! :-)
(07.07.09)
22. YNET Loves these stories just to blacken the Religios system
Gidon ,   Jerusalem   (07.07.09)
23. wedding refused
Shoshi ,   TA   (07.07.09)
It is really nice that you honor the Jewish tradition and want to have a real Jewish chuppa. so, I suggest that you contact the Conservative or Reform movement. You will still need that civil ceremony in Prague (another example of the Orthodox strangelhold on our lives), but you will be able to celebrate your momentous day under a Jewish chuppa and with a rabbi who really cares.
24. Refusal of parents & son to produce DNA test speaks 4 itself
Mati ,   Kfar Sava   (07.07.09)
It would have been easy for the groom to order a DNA test to prove he was the biological child of his parents. Also, a DNA test is far less expensive than travelling to Prague to get married, and it would have avoided a problem if they have children who want a Jewish marriage. Because his ID documents were suspected to be forged and couldn't be verified, it doesn't make sense for him and his parents to refuse a DNA test (if he was an honest person).
25. #10 DNA? are you kidding #11?
Lisa   (07.07.09)
#10- just another attempt to bash the rabbinate! really? we are talking about two young people who want to live together as JEWS. reading this story and hearing the TBs makes me wonder what century we are still living in! This sounds more like a witch hunt to me.... simple tests could solve this problem- but it probably is not kosher? Sorry for sounding sarcastic, but this story must be the absolute bottom line of weirdness- and Tbs are saying this kind of thing happens often? Would make me run the other way for sure- and to think the Nazis wanted a PURE nation- what is this obsession with PURE blood? Religion is FAITH .
26. #17,19 why not include DNA test in birth certificates
observer   (07.07.09)
at least, you can use those as birthright follies in the ME.
27. Genuine documents
David ,   Israel   (07.07.09)
The Israel Rabbinate has an obligation like any goverment or semi governemnt agency to check the authenticity of documents. If one presents documents in order to obtain some service then the documents must be flawless. That is true everywhere in the world. So why are people criticizing the Rabbinate and talking of separation of Church and State etc. That is not the issue at all. I don't think the Rabbinate would be making the lives of two people difficult without some solid reason. I recently re-inspected a Will and noted how on the one hand the signature at the end was in perfect handwriting yet on the other hand the initials on each page were in scribbly handwriting? That is inconsistent.. My suspicions revealed that the lawyer who drew up the Will was so severely criticized for 'incompetence' that she was forced to resign. But did she commit fraud? I haven't figured that out yet.
28. Wjhat the Rabbis should be doing is looking at the penis of
Rivkah   (07.07.09)
the father of the bride and groom. Father dead and no circumcision certificate? Too bad, not Jewish. What? Yes. There is a great lecture on circumcision by Glenn McWilliams available from Michael Rood Ministries. He said the reason Ishmael who was a son of Abraham was NOT the heir of the blessings and the land is because Ishmael was conceived by Abraham BEFORE Abraham was circumcised. For a child to be under the covenant (Jewish), conception must occur from the seed of the father passing through a circumcised penis into the mother. The seed of Abraham was heir to the promises of God. That seed was still in Abraham when he was circumcised because Ishmael was already born. Isaac was born AFTER Abraham was circumcised with the seed passing through a cut penis for conception to occur. The cutting of the foreskin is a reminder that the person would be cut off if he disobeyed the commandments and did not repent. The name of the CD lecture is "The Cutting," Great information.
29. Relax. It's just delayed until they can check with Tehran.
Anonymous ,   NY, NY   (07.07.09)
30. Who cares if he's adopted if he wants to practice Judaism?
this is why I'm not ,   conservative jew usa   (07.07.09)
These rabbis are off their nut! My rabbi would marry them for sure because they clearly want to be Jewish. Besides, by Jewish law, any children they might have will be Jewish because the wife is a Jew. They should get their ketubah from a Reform congregation and stay away from these zealots who dictate how Jewish someone is. Pathetic!
