1. Charedim respect only their own laws
Rafael ,   New York City, USA   (07.16.09)
Just like Charedim want their own courts, they want to pick and choose which laws of the land should be respected. If this woman's case is investigated, she may be found innocent or guilty, but justice must run its course. The behavior of these hooligans shows that learning in yeshivot all day does not make a person civilized. I have lived amongst them and know how they violate laws in the U.S. for their own benefit. For example, many avoid paying certain taxes by saying their homes are houses of worship, which leaves the rest of the citizens who don't do this to pay the taxes. Drivers in their communities know they must be extra vigilant as Charedi drivers violate the laws and endanger others on the roads. I could go on.
2. Transfer Haredim to PA
Rich ,   Miami USA   (07.16.09)
The only answer is to transfer the rioting Haredim to the PA. Mea Shearim should be exchanged for Ariel. These rioters are as civilized as Hezbollah.
3. The Haredi are rioting in support of child abuse?
Moshe Cryan ,   TA, Israel   (07.16.09)
Just when I thought you could not lose any more respect for the Haredi community, they once again prove me wrong. The police should start deal with these law breaking rioters in the harshest of ways as punish them to the full extent of the law.
4. Enough!
Gilad ,   Bet Shemesh   (07.16.09)
They are CRAZY! the riots have begun in Bet Shemesh, trash bins are on fire and rocks are being thrown (not just at police). They are yelling about that mother as if she was being sent to Siberia for being a Jew. The time has come for the police to let the chasidim know once and for all - you cannot act like animals on the streets of Israel! I hope they are all arrested!
5. These so called ultra-ortodox are really acting disgustingly
Johnny ,   Stockholm Sweden   (07.16.09)
Rioting over a would be child murderer? It is really very sickening to read this. Is this really true?
6. Worried about son
Worried ,   Concord, USA   (07.16.09)
I sent my 17 year old son to Israel to reinforce his resolve to be observant. He is in Jerusalem this week. I worry about the effect these riots will have on him. Also, as someone from a town where a lot of our economy depends on pleasing tourists, I sympathize with the non-rioters who will lose business, etc.
7. You have to read this....
Puzzled ,   Atlanta UsA   (07.16.09)
Am i the only one who notices a media bias against the Hareidim, while i do not agree with there actions, in no other story that ynet posts are there videos and pictures, whereas when it comes to Haredim there is ALWAYS a VIDEO or PICTURE to help sway public sentiment against the religious right. Shame on the reporting and media bias, lets be fair even when we dont agree, that what real journalism is!
8. These are not all chareidim, stop your ignorant attacks
Avraham   (07.16.09)
You would never dare to generalize liek this about blacks or Israeli Arabs. So, do me a favor and just shut up. I'm Orthodox, and in case of rioting and violence pertaining to this case with mother and her son, I condemn it. As to you non-chareidim, try to beat it into your heads that for every rioting chareidi, there are many more who don't and plenty who are appalled by what's going on.
9. #4-I wouldn't beg argument of that otherwise

10. Haredi is under trial with Israel
Ypip ,   Canada   (07.16.09)
She's most keen for council with them.

12. The truth..
Zev ,   Jlm   (07.16.09)
personally know the mother -she’s a woman everyone would wish to have her as a mother- and the family. And I’m following this story for over a year now. The story in short is as follows, at the age of 1 the child got sick. He had fever, couldn’t keep food down etc. so on the advice of Dr. Floris Levy, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist at Hadassah Medical Center -whom she highly trusted- he was hospitalized In the Hadassah ein-kerem medical center where he was (wrongly) diagnosed with cancer by Dr. Michael Weintraub and Dr. Memet Aker under whose "care" he is until now. the child was and still is under hospitol care the whole time. As time went by and as the child received chemo therapy (for no good reason) and no turn for the better the mother started to smell that some thing isn’t right. But was brainwashed by the doctors that they are doing everything for the child’s welfare. But as more time went by and still no improvement in the child’s condition. The mother smelled that something is fishy and started to question the doctors. That’s when one of the doctors mistakenly slipped out that the child was misdiagnosed. The parents were warned not to tell anybody and not listen to anybody’s advice. But even though, the doctors being afraid that the parents will open a malpractice case against them and the hospital. They preemptively counter accused them and opened up this child abuse case against the mother, to cover up their on wrongdoing. And created this exotic condition that the mother never had and b’ezras hashem will never have. now regarding to the protest's, rioting, etc. i strongly disapprove of any violence. but if anybody has any good suggestion's on how to free a Innocent Jewish mother (at least on bail, which the court denied. some thing that would never happen in the u.s. or any other civilized country providing she poses no threat to anyone.) after a week (she was actually arrested a week ago) trying to settle this through the proper channels (lawyers, doctors, etc.) please post/do it ASAP. because i don't think she can take this much longer. Now how about as another view on the story. p.s. she wasn’t arrested in the welfare office she was arrested in the middle of the street as the biggest criminal or worse and is kept so as well (without bail, kosher food, visitation rights, etc.) even though she is no threat to anyone. p.p.s. I don’t think her religious belief or organizational affiliation make any difference or even belong in the story.
13. The husband speaks..
Ani ,   Jerusalem   (07.16.09)
a interview with the father The husband relates what he says was the brutal conduct of the health authorities: "A month ago, there were no complaints from the medical staff. Then suddenly, they began to give my wife the feeling that they don't want her in the hospital. In the meantime, our child's health got worse after they gave him his food in a different way. They related badly to us, until a week and a half ago, my wife was given a court order to keep away from the child. She cried a lot, but nothing prepared us for what was coming." After the husband and his wife returned from a 3-day vacation, "we were asked to urgently come to the Welfare Dept. We were in touch with them because a social worker helped us with the child's health problems and the heavy expenses it entailed. "We sat down with the head of the department, Ruthy Shapira, and she told us we had to show up in court because of the distance order. We left the Welfare department and suddenly six policemen jumped on us and put handcuffs on my wife. Since last week, she's in custody. If someone is being abused, it's my wife. They won't even let her put on her contact lenses. "My wife is an aishes chayil and a devoted mother. Since she was arrested, I feel a huge hole in my life and great sadness. She was the mainstay of the house. I feel that the police and welfare department is destroying our home. She was devoted to our five children. She dresses them, washes their clothes, and cares for their meals throughout the day. She was never violent. For the past two years, she has stayed with our sick child throughout the day. It's impossible that she is an abuser." "So for that you send a contingent of police to arrest her and throw her into prison? Why wasn't medical staff sent to deal with the lady? Since when are people suffering from psychological disorders arrested and thrown into prison?" he asks. He attributes the riots in Meah Shearim to the anger of the residents to the ugly way the State dealt with the case. "They suspect the woman had Munchausen syndrome?" another Meah Shearim resident said. "How did the State handle other cases of Munchausen syndrome? With lurid accusations of abuse and public arrests accompanied by lengthy newspaper articles?"
14. Franco: we're working to restore order
Adamush ,   Israel   (07.16.09)
He's going to have them all shot.
15. Haredi's support for child abuse
DT ,   TA Israel   (07.16.09)
Haredi who demonstrate in support of Child abuse should not be allowed to have children
16. Riots come with being unemployed and uneducated.
Michael ,   Galut   (07.16.09)
Do they really think that the government just arrested her for being chareidi, and then invvented facts afterward? Or, are there a large amount of unemployed ppl, and kids who don't get enough physical activity, who therefore jump at the opportunity to get outside, run around, maybe throw some rocks and kick around garbage cans? I mean, that seems to include similar actions to soccer and baseball. Also, if they were educated, then they would respect doctors and their (mostly) professional work. (Don't get me started on Dr. Smith from Canada...)
17. Jewish Teliban
Avi ,   Israel   (07.16.09)
These discusting people belong behind bars, where they will be given a kosher meal served 3 times a day i belive Shas have a special winf to accomadated their MKs and this monster of a mother should be in an institution where she belongs and her children should be put in to foster care with a normal secular family. End of !
18. # 12 and #13
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (07.16.09)
I am appalled that this rioting is spreading. While there may be some truth ( maybe) mixed into your long long posts I question in #12 they were scared to say the MD misdiagnosed--no way! they are not scared to riot, destroy, throw garbage etc. etc.--and all of a sudden they get modest--give me a break!-- The reason btw that the religous belief is in the story is because if a secular mom was arrested for the same thing there wouldn't be hundreds of people rioting in the streets. #13--you are supposedly the father. And who gave you the heter to use the internet. After all isn't the internet a great sin? Now your child is in the hospital sick ( 14Kilo) and you go on vacation? --even if you aren't allowed to visit, what kind of people could go on vacation with a critically ill child. You claim that she should get psychological services--you are right, she should BUT she should get them in prison. In the US we detain those who comitt severe child abuse. I know, I am a mandated reporter in the US for suspected child abuse!
19. Brave Haredim - I need your help
Mahmoud A. ,   Tehran, Iran   (07.16.09)
You would be perfect for the Basij, my paramilitary militia of righteous men that take orders only from God. Why not come join me here in Tehran? You are greatly needed and will fit right in. Right now we're stretched a little thin, crushing democracy here in Iran. I need some strong young men who are not afraid to crack a few heads, and who can tell the difference between right and wrong. You would be perfect for this job. I will personally pay for your plane tickets. Once you're here, if you have any free time, I'll even let you burn down a few bus stops - just like back home! In fact, after you help me here, I'll help you in Israel. I'm sure that working together, we'll be able to turn Israel into a country that both of us will like a lot better. God is on our side. Asalaam Aleikum, Mahmoud A.

Shalom   (07.16.09)
this has just been sent to me: chana from monsey Says: To those of you who are really concerned. (Especially those who don’t jump to conclusions before hearing what really happened.) I personally know the mother -she’s a woman everyone would wish to have her as a mother- and the family. And I’m following this story for over a year now. 21. #8 AVRAHAM you should act now
Avi ,   Israel   (07.16.09)
As much as i agree with what you say, the fact is these people represent your community , their discusting behavior is not only an embarassment for the Charideem community but a discrase to Jewdism. They are causing people to turn away from religion , it is up to you my friend to take care of your own.Where are your rabbis condeming such acts? Supporting child abuse clearly demonstrates that these people no longer have the basic human ability to determine right from wrong.
22. send them to gaza.
ghostq   (07.16.09)
23. to #8 much like the palis you also violent

24. To the person who wrote "you have to read this"
H ,   Bet Shemesh, Israel   (07.16.09)
I live in bet shemesh and let me tell you- they are trouble makers!!! I got woken up last night to their rioting! We get our entrance ways spray painted saying to dress modestly, etc. We are anglo orthodox jews who are attacked, spat at, and harassed daily by these charedi people!
25. Use riot shotguns to break up the demos
jason white ,   afula,israel   (07.16.09)
No more welfare for them, turn off the electricity to their neighborhoods, close all yeshivas, no entering or leaving their neighborhoods and arrest all their leaders and exile them.
26. What is wrong with them
frank ,   israel   (07.16.09)
they really have to get over this "haridim" paranoia. Not every incident is against them because they are religious, sometimes it is about an individual in their community because that individual has done something wrong. Is this where they want to draw their line? Is this the battle they want to enforce. Protecting criminals and alledged child abusers???? Want to riot? fine, but I DEMAND the police stop the rioting!!! and I DEMAND they use any and all measures that will protect them (police) without consequence as to what it will do to you!!!! First the police need to stop the rioting. Then, and this is the impossible part, the haridim have to step back and actually look at and into the situation rather than listening to someone who heard it from someone who has a cousin who said.....
27.  RIOTS DON"T MAKE RIGHT !
ROLAND SEENER ,   LONDON ENGLAND   (07.16.09)
28. re:you have to read this
Ariel ,   Jerusalem   (07.16.09)
You have no idea what you are talking about!!! I have seen what that fringe group of haredi extremists have been doing here in Jerusalem and it is disgusting! I hope they won't clean their streets, let them do it themselves! Everywhere stones, garbage, burned, melted garbage bins, broken traffic lights... In the name of what exactly??? Hooligans they are and we all - religious and non religious - have more than enough of them.
29. #6 - I'd Be Worried Too. Police Must Stop This
Christy ,   Boston, US   (07.16.09)
I see you are from Concord. I'm assuming it's the Concord in my state, Massachusetts? I live in the Greater Boston Area. I pray your son is OK. I can't understand why the Israeli Police can't contain-control these rioters. I feel sorry for people who have to put up with the stench of burning trash and traffic tie ups in these protest areas. The law-abiding citizens have rights too. Israel is a democracy with a set of laws and a court system. This is the vehicle to be used when there are grievances. Riots just alienate people. I recall when the last Democratic Convention was held in Boston. Trouble from protesters was expected. The police were out in force. The protesters were allowed to protest at/in designated areas that were fenced off. The protesters were allowed their freedom of expression, but were contained due to fear of riots breaking out. Of course the protesters didn't like it. Too bad! I don't understand why the Israeli Police can't employ the same tactics. Fence off an area and herd the protesters into this contained area. Keep an eye on them. If anyone starts getting violent police move in *immediately* to arrest the trouble makers. Also, no bargaining with the rioters. If they are allowed concessions, it just reinforces the idea that violent protests work.
30. #12 - She May Look Like The Best Mom
Christy ,   Boston, US   (07.16.09)
*BUT* if she is suffering from Münchhausen Syndrome this is what she would appear to be. People suffering from this disorder need sympathy and support because this is actually what they crave and they go to great lengths to get the attention. Since she is a good woman at heart, she deserves to be evaluated to see if she needs some medical care. How do you know the son was wrongly diagnosed? Have you examined his medical records, or are you just taking this mother's word for it? Again, it would make absolute sense for someone suffering from this syndrome to have friends and neighbors believe her son had ailments that were diagnosed incorrectly. She would *need* to draw attention to herself as the selfless victim in this. For the sake of this woman and her children this matter needs to be sorted out in a court of law. Medical records will be presented to show if the doctors have been negligent -or- if this woman is suffering from a psychological condition. If the doctors have been negligent, your friend will be vindicated and can probably sue for lots of money. This case can *NOT* be decided by riots in the street. They are of no help to this woman and her child.
