1. Women friendly shuls
Avi   (07.24.09)
already exist. It's called Reform Judaism, and it's widely available in America
2. Welcome to the 19th century
Eric ,   Tel Aviv   (07.24.09)
Wonderful news that a Rabbi has realized that the lack of requirement is not the same as a prohibition and women are allowed to participate outside of the home. If he keeps it up he may bring religion into the 20th century before the 21st ends.
3. Dear Avi, #1
Rabbi Reuven Carmel ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.24.09)
Are you claiming to know Halacha better than Rav Sherlo? Are you aware of halachic arguments against his positions? Or is that you think Rav Sherlo's positions can't be authentic just because they're insufficiently inflexible and extreme in your eyes? Perhaps you haven't learned, and are not aware that his views have support of major poskim. Do you claim to be such a gadol that you can not only overrule those greater than you but can deride their views as being "Reform Judaism?" If so, please reveal yourself so the frum world can have the benefit of your greater learning and authority.
4. What changed?
Gerry ,   New Jersey, USA   (07.24.09)
Hard to believe that it took over 3,000 years and millions of deaths to convince us that women could be orphaned and might want to recite the Kaddish with their community just as men do. What changed?
5. Dear #3
Asher ,   Jerusalem   (07.25.09)
Avi doesn't have to claim to know anything, but the reality is, that regardless of your claim "his views have support of major poskim." means simply that. Support doesn't "the green light, to do or allow. Why is it always these Rabbis who come up with trying to make changes. That sure sounds like " make me feel good religion" Reform, Conservative, call it what you want, has brought a 51% assimilation rate, with their "Feel Good" approach, to the USA. Have a great Shabbos!!
6. Well it look's very fine
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.25.09)
First his explanation on blind men , now this . Very sympathic and open minded . Not to wonder , is it my good influence ?
7. Dear #5
Rabbi reuven Carmel ,   Jerusalem, ISRAEL   (07.26.09)
Let me state it more plainly so you can understand it. Major poskim have ruled exactly like Rav Sherlo. It is not within the rights of you, or I, or Avi, to hold ourselves superior to Rav Sherlo, or any talmid chacham, and deride what they propose as being "Reform" or "Conservative." If you have learned and are authorized to pasken in these areas, then you are certainly free to disagree and state your disagreement publicly. But you have no right to mock and insult those who are far greater than yourself.
8. Rav Sherlo is a halachic authority.
Michael ,   Galut   (07.27.09)
Rav Sherlo is a halachic authority, just in case some ppl here are not aware. How does one become a halachic authority? A) Know a lot of halacha. B) Answer tens of thousands of halachic questions. C) Publish a few volumes of halachic responsa in addition to a number of other great books on Tanach and Jewish thought. D) Become Rav of a city, a Rosh Yeshiva, and maybe even found an organization like the Tzohar Foundation. E) Be accepted as a halachic authority by thousands, if not tens of thousands, of observant Jews.
9. it depends who is carrying the Torah
hanina ,   california   (07.30.09)
some shabbats the carrier is told to avoid the women section, or give us 2 seconds to push someone aside to kiss the Torah, while others laugh at the women when we request the carrier to bring it to the women's side. Even the best husband can feel threatened by the other men if they walk towards the women section. And once in a while, a good man walks slowly down the ladies isle, to which he is waved over to the arc like a madman ready for his dinner after a fast. Usually the chabad rabbis are the kindest and their shuls treat everyone with respect. Maybe the chabad rabbis could teach these shuls a thing or two.
10. criticism mostly due to lack of learning
Ron ,   Leiden; Netherlands   (08.04.09)
Those really studying thora and halacha know that there is no big controversy here. It seems that the lack of architectural support for women's participation has been ingrained in people's mind as 'the only way to go'. Please educate yourself by (1) studying thora; and (2) studying Rav Sherlo's comments and his sources. Only if you have truly made effort to understand Rav Sherlo, are you in a position to offer critique. Now it just means being afraid of change.
11. Rav Sherlo
BlancheNudel ,   NewYork City   (09.08.09)
Finally I see the sensitivity I longed for in shul. A rabbi who cares about all the members. May this be the beginning. Thank you Rav Sherlo.
