Hi Ariel, yes, i am an ex- Orthodox, now Karai/// Regarding Tefillin: If you want to use The Shema as proof for tefillin, then there are some problems: Deuteronomy Chapter 11 יח וְשַׂמְתֶּם אֶת-דְּבָרַי אֵלֶּה, עַל-לְבַבְכֶם וְעַל-נַפְשְׁכֶם; וּקְשַׁרְתֶּם אֹתָם לְאוֹת עַל-יֶדְכֶם, וְהָיוּ לְטוֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֵיכֶם. So , this indicates there are 4 "boxes" and not two! But on a more serious level, we Sephardi Jews recite קַדֶּשׁ-לִי before putting on Teffilin. In this reading, we find exactly what the meaning of Totafot is. IN Ex. 13, we see: ט וְהָיָה לְךָ לְאוֹת עַל-יָדְךָ, וּלְזִכָּרוֹן בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ, לְמַעַן תִּהְיֶה תּוֹרַת יְהוָה, בְּפִיךָ: כִּי בְּיָד חֲזָקָה, הוֹצִאֲךָ יְהוָה מִמִּצְרָיִם. and טז וְהָיָה לְאוֹת עַל-יָדְכָה, וּלְטוֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ: כִּי בְּחֹזֶק יָד, הוֹצִיאָנוּ יְהוָה מִמִּצְרָיִם. טוֹטָפֹת is used in exactly the same context as זִכָּרוֹן . 9; refers to Matzot of the festival of Matzot. 16, refers to the Firstborn sacrifice and redemption for sons. Both are to be remembered. It is not about "tefillin" or black leather boxes. So the word טוֹטָפֹת can be understood as a "remembrance". It does not mean a black box! Both of these verses talk about our hands and between our eyes. So, again, how does this relate to tefffilin? Do we also put matza on our hands and heads? Do we put the first born ox on our heads? It would not be practical, but perhaps this is how the idea of leather came from? In any case, it is clear from this in Shemot, that the phrase simply means to remember in our minds (between the eyes) and in our actions (hands) our exit from Egypt. Tzitit is simpler to understand. they fringes on the corner of garments. The conceptual difficulty is whether they are "kosher" or not. But the Torah does nto specify what makes them invalid, so ther ei snot formal method of winding the tzitzit, but they have been fomalised over the centuries. Look at Yemenite tzitzit and compare them to ashkenazy ones - they are almost completely different!
