Might as well close the airports down

3. they should ask to see
the return plane ticket as they do in europe.
In the past 2 years i entered many european countries, even though i have not had a job for that same period. granted, i did have on me more than $50, but they never asked. They did ask to see my return plane ticket though, which of course I had.

4. What a sham!
The Tourism Minister should be ashamed of himself. His role is to promote tourism, not aide illegal immigration, intermarriage, and who knows what else.
#1 is quite correct that if meeting on Facebook is a way to gain entry to Israel, we may as well shut up shop now.

5. And the Minister of the Interior is ?
Yep its Eli Yishai, when hes not deporting those pesky non jewish children and splitting up famailies its a busy day declaring that all the settlements are legal or his latest scam of diverting Goverment funds intended for the Interior ministry to the illegal settlements No time for such triavial matters such as running the Interior minstry !

7. You cant get a visa for the USA without a job.
When I needed a visa for the USA, I had not been working in my job for a year. They wanted confirmation of my husband's job status (he'd been in his job 10 years) and confirmation that we were not getting divorced.

8. Apartheid strikes again!
Imagine we would detain a Jew who enters USA because he has 50$ in his pocket and has quit his job.
Everybody who even looked on the issue papers would have to resign on grounds of being antisemitic.
Well, what else to expect from chosen people whose prominent rabbis say that "Non Jews have an animal soul cause they are not able to lift it cause they do not do 613 mitzvot" (from Ovadia Yosef's circle).

9. Not immigration policies that's damaging Israel's image
It's the deranged mentality of the Left that's damaging Israel’s image.
Can Israel’s image ever be restored after they themselves cruelly expelled 9,000 Jews, loyal citizens, from their homes, destroyed those communities, including their holy synagogues, and abandoned Gush Katif to our enemies and are continuing their destruction policy of Jewish homes and communities? Sick and getting sicker!

10. Tourism Minister
I am sure there is more than the story tells, however, I have traveled a lot, and all countries are strict on entrance. Anyone arriving anywhere with $50, no job, etc. would surely arouse suspicion--many countries would ship them right back out. Still, it would be interesting to learn the details that kept her impounded for 5 days!

11. Acting Responsibly !
She should have acted with responsibility by abiding with laws, rules, and regulations concerning visiting other countries. To cite the best example : her Israeli boyfriend could have gone to Peru to meet her and then accompany her to Israel instead of her venturing irresponsibly to this country with $50 only and being subjected to self-depreciation and humiliating incarceration.
If I were minister of interior or minister of tourism I would have let her have the same treatment she got at the airport.Stop using cases of outsiders to influence our emotions and make us pay money for them when we can hardly make both ends meet !

13. Genuine tourists often embarressed
Putting aside the Facebook incident, it's true in general that Israeli immigration officers are quite rude to tourists. Every visitor is being interrogated as if he/she is a criminal. Yes, one can be strict on immigration policies but there is no reason to treat every visitor as a terrorist.

14. No. 8 Rebecca
I'm not really surprised by your experience because the American regulations have become, of necessity, rather Draconian. However, I'm waiting for somebody to claim that your experience "damaged America in the eyes of the world."
The question now becomes why is it that in Israel, every incident that raises somebody's ire seems to damage the whole country, when apparently that isn't the case anywhere else?

15. Treatment to "visitors"
No one can enter Australia or the USA without a fixed address, enough money for the time spent in the country and assurances that there is a job waiting on your return. We let anyone in and many slip through the cracks and are here for many years.

17. wrong approach
as a tourist you are expected to have a return ticket- anywhere in the world- the airline that brings you in- is responsible..so did thid woman have a return ticket or not, why not? Fine the airline!.
not having more than 50 Dollars? big deal- what happened to credit cards? I never carry much cash- for obvious reasons...the holding cells would be full if this was a valid reason.
No job? I know plenty of people who quit their jobs and travel around the world for a year- no-brainer!
Facebook? So? He has no idea who this woman is #1- so- they meet is that a sin?
If anybody who visits Israel wants to stay there- THEN the country might have a problem- this sounds like overreactio and paranoia- .

21. #8 - Brad - Not just Jews, but many visitors
You're an idiot...and an uneducated Leftist one at that. You parrot every stupid buzzword that gets a rise in this PC society of the US. Apartheid? Does that even relate to visitors? Check a dictionary...I'll even buy one for your sorry ass.
You know what....INS DOES hold people who have only $50 and quit their job back home! They hold people on less than that BECAUSE of the fear of those who over-stay their welcome.
When I came to visit my parents in the US with my fiancee, we had to stay at a hotel and not my parents' house or the VISA would be denied. How's that for fairness?? It's even worse now after 9/11.
You shame the US and the education system there because of your illogical, knee-jerk thought process which wouldn't even get you a passing grade in an inner city grade school.
And by the way, if you do quote one of our rabbis, please chose one that is not radical and more followed. You just blew your credibility by selecting Yosef. Dummy.

22. #13 - Guess how many "tourists" they catch?
I've been through immigration a million times in Israel. I saw others as well go with me. No one was treated like a criminal, unless they were one, and to those who feel differently, maybe you're just overly-sensitive.
The questioning is terse and repetitive, and that's a very valid way of getting to the truth. Law enforcement use this quite regularly to trip up people's fake stories. Considering the type of people Israel gets as "tourists"....would-be terrorists, spies, Violent activists, smugglers, etc....there is a strong reason for these tactics and I for one support them fully.
And...Israel has caught many people who would have created problems within Israel.
If you don't like the treatment at the airport, thanks to our violent, racist neighbors, then may I suggest you stop in Mallorca instead of our Tel Aviv and Eilat.

23. Would have cost the boyfriend
less to go and get her. 5 days seems a lot, so wonder if there isnt more to this story.
Every country wants proof a tourist is going to leave, so what so wrong if we do the same. Try getting into the USA , how many have they put straight back on a plane home.

25. Why surprised, given Israel's problems with illegals?
I've been to Israel several times - most recently in 2005 and 2008 - and never been "abused" or humiliated in any way when being questioned. I had a clear purpose for the visit, documentation if requested, a return ticket when I wasn't there for long term study, and adequate cash.
That she had no job to return home to, no return ticket, limited funds, and a local boyfriend was reason enough to suspect she intended to stay beyond a brief visit.
Israel is already contending with a few hundred THOUSAND illegals, and every time they try to deal with them, there's a hue and cry.
Yes, they could do some things better. They could start by first ending the importation of yet more "temporary" workers. But there's a tendency to raise every individual case to one of systematic abuse. Get over it.

26. #23 meg
most countries want proof (return ticket)-
Airlines are getting fined for letting passengers on without a return ticket- but that is still no guarantee the person will actually leave- neither is proof of money...
it is still up to the border guards and immigration personnel..and they are not all perfect... crooks are missed and innocent people are held...
Israel has the right to check out tourists, real and others..so has any other country.
I agree 5 days is too long- where was the so called boyfriend? Didn't he know about this? Had he lost interest in the young woman? There must be more to this story...
