1. Contradictions
Berl ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.09)
Rav Eliyashiv needs to be consistent, he worries about Shabbos desecration at the Kotel but his fair haired soccer playing Representative Pindrus allow his master Barkat to keep the Karta parking lot open. What a deal, Pindrus gets free body guards, got Lupoliansly's old office, takes his family on tiyulim for shabbos to Netanya all on the cheshbon of teh Iriyah for his support of Karta being open on shabbos! Why isn't Rav Eliyashiv watching what Pindrus does as his representative from Degel HaTorah?
2. Living in their own world, intruding into ours
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (08.19.09)
Perhaps all it takes to be deemed by some a "leading halachic authority" is to demand increasing stringencies totally divorced from tradition or common sense. Rabbis used to be cautioned against rulings the tzibur (public) would not accept. The public recognizes that having security cameras and cops on patrol fall within the rubric of "pikuach nefesh" - saving lives. For the stringency crowd that's apparently not "kosher" enough.
3. Judaism is very apt and modern as compared to any other
benjamin ,   singapore   (08.19.09)
....religion on this earth. Modernity is not necess- a desecration. The cameras are there for security purposes, which is a matter to the heart of the national interest and public policy. In the days of the temple, there were still security officer on guard and on duty, now , we have the security camera. Halahchic rulings should be proactive and innovative and creative. In fact almost all the halachic rulings are to make the society better, towards the commandments. It should be encouraging active participation but not otherwise.Israelite must learn to accept modernity as a progressive attitute but not see the cameras, as desecreting . The whole reason for such security camera is to monitor the security levels, where the interest is for the common good of the inhabitants as of right.. Let the Police do their work :-) the camera also work by a programme soft-ware like the Shabbat Lamp.So why such a confusion ? no body can stop us from visiting the Kotel. We can see kotel from Israel by webcamera, we even cant send out prayers to a Hashem but net and see the walls via camera. Besides that the cameras were designed and created by Jews later the japaness invented further. no harm done ! Just move on go forth...dont get into unnecesary glits.Sometimes this is all a battle of who is the best law keeper. " I am holier than thou" attitude. There noo need to cause unnecessary split in judaism. The camera repairs the world- tikun Olam- to all repair the security loops to better enhance, upgrade he serveilance. chrees benjamin singapore
4. They should have stopped long ago.
Josh   (08.19.09)
People are always taking pictures. LOL The wise spiritual authorities? ( I am shaking my head) Guess the rabbi missed the point of praying to G-d. It is not about boycotting man.
5. Join the Chumra of the Month Club !!
Yisrael ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.09)

6. jesusalen
jesusalen ,   jesusalen   (08.19.09)
jesusalen is the revelation of the king of kings jesus messiah (apocalypse 21)
7. In the Torah
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (08.19.09)
it is written... So it isn't written, there seems to be some rabbi who will add it to the Torah to suit whatever he deems correct. There seems to be a surfeit of Torah additions being bruited about in Israel these days. Strangely, Moses didn't believe it to be his job to add to Hashem's words; while these current rebbunim believe it is their perogative. Oh well, guess they want to be the Jewish popes.
8. 4 , again this guer scheker
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.09)
attacks all the Rabbanim . And he wonders that he is rejected by the religious and secular Jews . He should be honest , not a disgusting liar .
9. As usual, anti-religious article
Dr. Z ,   NY   (08.20.09)
YNet has as usual printed an article slanted to make haredi leaders look bad. The actual issue is a complex one. There is a software solution to the problem in Jewish law, and this solution will not require any significant change by the security forces, but the powers that be could not care less...hence Rav Elyashiv's circle has regretfully issued its warning.
10. it wont be kosher to monitor the Messiah
(08.20.09)
11. Why does this bother us Jews?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (08.20.09)
They are so far from Judaism that they are almost another religion.
12. Okay, no problem
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel-Aviv   (08.20.09)
It's not like it's the first stop I make if I am in Jerusalem. Once upon a time it actually was, but times change.
13. Freedom
Talula ,   Israel   (08.20.09)
No-one has to listen to him. Jerusalem is a free city, and it's our city. We can go whenever we feel the need - and if that need is on Saturday, so be it.
14. He's right, let them stay home because there's cameras...
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.20.09)
everywhere.
15. on a scale of 10
Lisa   (08.21.09)
on a scale of 10 this concern surely must be at the bottom of any Jewish person...... Is security for the devote not more important that some obscure and outdated law? 'Desecrating Shabbat'- this term is used much to loosely and frivolously by the Ravs-every rabbi has a pet project it seems- And really, is there a place where there are NO security cameras in the modern world? Besides, the camera is automatic- NO PERSON Jew or non-Jew is operating it- look at it as a pater-noster- a non-stop elevator which was such a clever invention!?!?
16. Haredim not to visit the Wall on Shabbat
Eli ,   Israel   (08.21.09)
One would hope that they's stay away every day.
17. The Shabbat is the day people SHOULD pray at the Kotel.
Rivkah   (08.21.09)
My goodness. The ancient Israelites condemned themselves to separation from the Lord by NOT going to the Kotel to pray on certain holy days as commanded by God. Observing the Shabbat means going to the Kotel at least once a year since even the Millenium Kingdom of the Jewish Messiah or High Priest, leaders of nations that do not go to the rebuilt four Temple in Jerusalem where the Lord will dwell and His Messiah High Priest will reign, will not get water (rain) for the year. Going to the Kotel will be compulsory even for world leaders. So those who live near the Kotel are are visiting Jerusalem should go to the Western Wall for Shabbat and other Holy Days like in time of old when massive crowds shouted, "Hosanna in the Highest..."
18. Go to the wall only on Shabbat
Oded   (08.22.09)
Go to the wall only on Shabbat It is the only day the mafia baggers are not there. We should be a shame in the way they "work" and bother the visitors standing next to the wall. They must give a cut to the bosses of the wall.
19. Yet they're allowed to riot and throw stones at police
dave ,   uk   (08.22.09)
on shabbat.
20. Dishonesty
Yoni R. ,   Modiin, Israel   (08.23.09)
The headline says that Rav Elyashiv made this ruling, while the article says that his supporters did. There is a major, yet largely unappreciated, difference between the two. The author seems to be cynically taking advantage of the general public's ignorance of it to make Rav Elayshiv seem out of touch.
21. Western Wall Edict
Sheldon Kupferman ,   Bronx, NY, USA   (08.25.09)
Rabbi Elyashiv et al need to stop being FRUMOMETERs , measuring other people's observance. Rather focus on their own. It would be nice if they would be pained just as much by the parasitism and pain the chareidi community causes to the rest of the country as they are with chilul Shabbat. It's part of being Tov and Yashar. When they improve themselves then they can be mentors to others. Until then their statement are nothing more than stupidity and hypocrasy.
