1. Not a good idea, considering an ElectroMagnetic
Rivkah   (11.08.09)
Pulse attack at any moment could put out the fiberoptics in most vehicles and they would not run. If horses and carts are not treasured and tolerated, they will not be around to do what vehicles do now when they are needed.
2. its about time!
Ruben ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.08.09)
I commend this decision, we should stop the abuse of animals in our city, those poor horses are underfed and beaten, forced to drag carriages full of junk across the heavy traffic of the city. Everytime I see that my heart breaks. Good decision.
3. Now lets see them implement it.
Bob ,   Tel Aviv   (11.08.09)
4. I don't get it, police forces got horses
ghostq   (11.08.09)
but this is banned, y, no really y?
5. Now outlaw littering and dog poop on sidewalks, please
TT   (11.08.09)
TA is a great city in lots of ways, but it is also a very dirty city in lots of neighborhoods. It astonishes me that Israelis tolerate the level of filth that exists in many places--garbage strewn all over the lots and street edges, dog shit all over the sidewalks...and in the national parks, people feel perfectly comfortable leaving behind heaps of their own trash from picnics. In fact, one of the most amazing sights I have ever witnessed was the aisles of an ElAl flight after landing in TA--literally as deep as the seats row after row. Have some dignity, Israelis and pick up after yourselves. Honestly, it is disgusting.

9. No More "Alte Zachen"
M. Martin ,   NYC/Tel-Aviv   (11.09.09)
No more alte zachen guys?!?!? Bummer - I loved the Alte Zachen guys - it was something that made Tel-Aviv special, connected it to an earlier time. Now it's gone. : (

Apparently you haven't seen some of the police down here... I've always wondered how they could chase after a criminal, ah, the horse...
11. It's impossible to find a parking space for a small car...
Truth Hertz ,   UK   (11.09.09)
In Tel Aviv, so where would you park a horse & cart?

16. let the horses stay for tourists but gone for the junk deale
zionist forever   (11.09.09)
You need to get rid of the junk peddlers but there are also some horse drawn carriages that take tourists around the town and it would be a shame to loose tourist attractions for the sake of junk dealers. It should be a licenced thing if your using it for trading then if your caught you can be stopped and punished legally but for an old man giving tourists a tour of the city that should be allowed.
17. Horses
Marilyn ,   USA   (11.10.09)
One of the animal rights groups first came about because of the carriage horses. It's been a long haul, but there are now lots of rules designed to at least somewhat protect them. However with Tel Aviv what's going to happen to the horses now that they aren't working?
18. Ban having house pets
yoni ,   tel aviv   (11.10.09)
i think the animal rights people should fight against domestication of dogs and cats if they really cared for the animals. These dogs are bred and raised in ways that will make them most appealing to be sold off to someone live in an apartment in the city out of their natural habitat and forced to poop on concrete sidewalks. The only interaction they get with other animals is excited barking and playing with eachother in passing on their walks. they are forced to hold it in and wait and beg their owners to take them out when they need to go. It is simply inhumane to breed and raise animals only to suffer and live under human rule
19. thank you, these animals are regularly abused!
Yael ,   Tel Aviv   (11.10.09)
Anyone who has ever seen the deplorable condition these horses are in and the abusive treatment they receive regularly (beatings, pulling heavy loads in a state of utter exhaustion, often illshod and limping on painful hooves that are leaking pus) will be thankful for this ruling, if they have any decency.
20. Very happy about this!

What a hilarious debate...haha
22. To: Marilyn at No. 17
Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (11.13.09)
The horses will in all likelihood be put out to pasture on farms of many, many volunteers who eagerly take these poor creatures, to live out the end of their lives in quiet contentment, much the way carriage horses in New York which have been mistreated do. I have a friend in Swan Lake, New York, who has taken eight such horses. It's a fair ending to the ongoing disgusting problem of abuse of these gentle and dignified animals.

Amen, Birdi. Amen.

Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (11.13.09)
Just do what they do in New York. There are "poop-scoop" laws in effect. Not everyone observes them, but it's a $750 fine if they are caught not picking up after their pet. I live in an apartment and I have a golden retriever. His exercise is easily accomplished by a one-hour run twice a day in the park. Not a problem. Fun for the whole family. For the record -- if you raise children with dogs, your child will learn respect, affection, loyalty, love and responsibility. I don't have a problem with any of those qualities. I'm not sure I understand why you do.
25. yoni (#18), you don't know what pets are about, do you?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (11.13.09)
yoni clearly doesn't understand that animals have served as companions for thousands of years in many cultures. I don't know what yoni's experiences have been; for all I know he's another animal rights extremist - a disciple of Singer maybe. My father grew up poor in an Arab country where animals were considered unclean or a burden. My nieces and nephews, in contrast, grew up with dogs - shelties, a beagle and a retriever - and are the better for it.
26. 19Yael: That is sad, but I am sure the horses prefer to be
Rivkah   (11.13.09)
alive hauling loads than to be sent to a glue factory or made into pet food. King Solomon said a righteous man considers his beasts, so I am surprised that Jews would mistreat animals unless it is not Jews but Arabs or atheists. Real Jews are concerned for their beasts.
27. shame
pea sandwich ,   tel aviv   (11.13.09)
this is a blow to recycling! in the uk up to the 80's we had rag and bone men - guys who would come to our homes on horse and carriages and collect all the household junk we no longer needed. They would then fix it or do it up and resell it. The phenomena died out in a in the 80's but looking back we can see that these guys were actually the first re-clyclers !!

Evidently, the two of you did not comprehend my light jesting. I have been to Israel an extensive amount of times. Ani Mehdaber evret ahee tov, az maspeek em ta shtooyot al "ani yodeh ani gar po" Famtoulalah? (Tunisian Arabic... Evidently you misinterpretted my comment) That you would answer me like you thought me asking you "have you ever seen the cops down here?" It's called rhetorical posturing... Sarah, I respect your very strong stance with Israel, which I share no less. Please don't cheer on the man who takes rhetoric seriously. I also was in Haifa and in bomb shelters during Katuyshua attacks in 2006. I find your comment far too assuming with too much little personal fact on me. Other then that, I enjoy both your posts in the political articles and keep advocating! It's people like us that make Israel/Jewish world one and great.
29. Only Horses?
Yaacov Krief ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.15.09)
