1. This story is fishy
Yerach ,   Jerusalem,Israel   (11.05.09)
The interior ministry no longer lists religion on the ID card/teudat zehut. It now has little stars like so *******. It no longer says Yehudi,Aravi, etc. Something is not right in this story.
2. JTS
Joel ,   United States   (11.05.09)
I agree with #1. Why did she have to change the status of her mother? Why was the mother not already listed as a Jew? Why this HUGE emphasis on grandparents and the Holocaust...maybe it has something to do with the Jewish Theological Seminary advert at the end of this article. Maybe it has something to do with the reform/conservative movement whose followers only claim to Judaism is via ONE set of grandparents and, yes, we can't forget, the Holocaust. That is American "Jewry" for you: 1 set of Jewish grandparents, who are usually the parents of a Jewish man who married a gentile woman (that includes a female reform/consvt. "convert"...still a gentile), and the Holocaust. Very little connection to Torah and or Observance and thus that is why we have increasing numbers of "Jewish" kids voicing their hatred of the Jewish Nation when they go off to their liberal arts private colleges. They have no foundation besides what they received at the reform/conservative religion's Sunday school ("tikkun olam"). The Jewish Nation's worst enemy is not Iran, but the increasingly gentile reform/conservative religion...
3. And I thought I had it bad
Jacob Erickson ,   Holon, Israel   (11.05.09)
I've been working for 4 months to prove I'm Jewish to the Rabbinical Council to get married, but they keep sending me away for more information. I keep joking with my friends that I will eventually have to walk into the Rabbinoot and drop my pants to show that I am Jewish. And even though I am joking about it, I am sure someone before me has been annoyed to the point where they have.
4. to #1, oh but they do.....
Brian ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.05.09)
....your I.d. does say if your Jewish, you just don't know it.
5. To 1 , not "fishy" at all
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.05.09)
No "Jewish" anymore on new issued Israeli ID's , you are right . But the Jewish birth date is given for Jews . In the registers there is still a mention of religion , how could they know otherwise if someone is Jewish or not .
6. To #3 The mechanism of proving .....
Jock Strap ,   Jerasulam, Israel   (11.05.09)
I went through what you describe many years ago.Despite having all the true, honest and official documentation as proof. In the end I was advised by somebody simply to go out onto the street ,ask two men to vouch that they knew me from my country of origin and that would be sufficient. It worked,Just illustrates how stone age so many of these Rabbinim really are.really are.Good luck with your efforts. I now have grandchildren.
7. Identity card.
Philip Afula ,   Afula,Israel   (11.05.09)
In a democracy what does it matter whether they are Jewish ,Muslim,Christian or whatever .......in Israel they are all Israelies are they not.?
8. #1 FYI
(11.05.09)
as of 1989 all Israeli identity cards listed nationality in the card along with the additional sentence reading at the bottom of the card reading in Hebrew translated here for you: "According to section 3 of the law of population registry of 1965 the items of personal status and nationality (leum) must be verified." Since the mid-90s the line for Leum (Nationality) was removed from the identity cards however there are still two ways to know by reviewing an identity card whether or not the holder of the id card is Jewish 1. the Hebrew date of birth of the holder of the ID card is listed next to the secular birthdate and 2. each ID number holds within it a specific coded series number which indicates whether or not the holder of the ID card is Jewish. Just as an aside: I am amused that you feel you know better than two Supreme Court Judges without having the full facts of the case and/or without knowing the above information. Please do get informed before making the statements you make otherwise well hate to say it but you sound mightly uninformed bordering on STUPID!
9. Who is Jewish?
Jew - I hope!! ,   Israel   (11.05.09)
If there is ever a big aliyah from America (and other countries as well), there will be an even bigger mess on this issue than there is now with olim from Russia. In America, many people who think they're Jews are not, and many who think that they are not Jewish, are.
10. we are used to think that the arabs are
Eshkol Hakofer   (11.05.09)
so awful, with the syrians and others writing on ID Cards Mussawi (of mosaic faith). How different are we? In what are we better?
11. to 8 , not completely correct
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.05.09)
The "nationality" was removed much later , my ID card shows "יהודי " and was issued at the beginning of this century .
12. #9 who is a jew ? Keep posted !!!
Arnold ,   Ayers Rock, Australi   (11.05.09)
Just wait for the racist versions that shall soon appear and you will cringe with shame or disgust with their versions.
13. #11 interesting thanks for sharing additional info!
(11.05.09)
Please note that the information I cited was for ID cards issued in Jerusalem...perhaps there was a difference for ID cards issued in Petach Tikva. But still I note it and appreciate the information shared. #8
14. Ortodox Jews are only one of the "tribe"
Pluralist Jew ,   Budapest, Hungary   (11.05.09)
Israel has no interest to ignore or doubt the Jewishness of almost half of diaspora Jews jut because Israel left out of Jewish pluralist development. The vaste majority of US Jews are Reform, supporting Israel morally and financially. It's time to put an end to Ortodoy Rabbinate's often racist hegemony in Israel and open a Reform and Masorti Rabanut parallel. It's also time to acknowledge that there is an Ortodo Halacha and a Non-Ortodox Halacha. Different Jewsih streams should respect each-other and live side by side without arrogance. The State of Israel should not be an Iran-styled religious "sharia state", i.e. religious freedom, equality of Jewish streams, and the division of state and religion might have been granted long ago. Israel's interest is attract as many Jews as possible (and not only haredim and other Ortodox!) because the Arab population is growing rapidly. This is the only solution for Israel to survive in loger run.
15. #14
Felix ,   tel aviv / toronto   (11.05.09)
i agree 100%. not to mention that the current orthodox conversion and matrilineal Jewishness are man made concepts and not part of the Torah. (PLEASE no talk backs where you refer me to Rabbi-made rulings. They are not G-d!!!!)
16. Who is a Jew anyway? Is there any real one?
(11.05.09)
Mizrahim say: All Ashkenazim Kuzarim(Khazars/Turks). Ashkenazim say: All Mizrahim are Arabs. Everyone say: Russian immigrants are not Jews, they are Rusian, Ukranian, etc. So, who is the real Jew? Seems like no real Jew left...All Israel can do is to find some blocks and convert them to Judaism and try to make them loyal Israeli Jews. How far that can work?
17. Time for Changes
cas reader   (11.05.09)
I totally agree with #14 and #15. The ultra-Orthodox is holding the Israeli government ' captive '. Separation between State and Religion is one of the core principles of a true democracy. It's also time for a civil marriage process. We live in the 21st Century after all.
18. #1, #8 is 100% correct u r bordering on stupid!
hms pinofore   (11.05.09)
19. Jews and Judaism
Edgar ,   Vancouver Canada   (11.06.09)
You're a bloody fool, just like those 2 whom you support. If you guys had your way, there would be no Jews left in about 50 years. Judaism would go the way the Yiddish Theatre went....into oblivion. Regardless of what you think of the Rabonim [and here I can say that I agree with you about Rabonim] the Orthodox Jew is who keeps Judaism alive and Thank G=D flourishing.
20. no:16 yeah i am
Adi CohenR ,   Raanana   (11.06.09)
21. 13 , ID cards are issued by the ministry
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.07.09)
of interior . Their rules are the same anywhere .
22. Judaism is PLURAL
joseph ,   TA,Israel   (11.07.09)
Stop the totalitarian orthodox view about judaism!
