Dahlan: We may seek UN resolution on Palestinian state    Ali Waked
1. borders
Didn't the UN already give them borders, in 1948?
Yuri ,   Chicago   (11.10.09)
2. THE SECURITY COUNCIL WOULD NEVER SUPPORT THE IDEA
There is no way the Security Council will agree to recognize an arab state in those borders the whole issue is to sensetive. It also runs the risk of a regional war accepting an arab state in those borders if its not something thats been negotiated and agreed on with Israel. UN votes all of Judea & Samaria along with east Jerusalem is its capital so now legally at least palestinians are in charge of these areas. Israel is not going to just abandon its settlements and especially east Jerusalem. There is the issue of holy places in Jerusalem, the palestinians want the Old City. What will happen to modern Jerusalem once its been divided unilaterally? The only thing the Security Council would be sure of is that if they accept this idea and recognize an arab state in these borders it will result in war which other arab states like Jordan may even end up getting dragged into especially Jordan because 80% of its population are palestinians. The 5 permament members with vetos will make sure the Security Council never votes to recognize a palestinian state within certain borders unless it was agreed on with Israel.

3. I do not think they will get any part of Jerusalem.
And Israel will not allow to create new Palestinian Judenfrei. But other than that why not?
leo ,   usa   (11.10.09)
4. There's no Jewish occupation - Possible class action suit
It's time Israelis themselves used international law to defend themselves from this false accusation. The government has been silent about Israel's international rights to its borders. Even though it does not use the word occupation very often, it acts as if Jews were occupying somebody else's land. Hence the housing freeze and the increased activities by the PA in eastern Jerusalem. Justice Now for Israel - or Office for Israeli Constitutional Law - is doing what this and past governments should have done already: to confront the US for their 'forgetfulness' regarding their own international treaties and agreements that confirmed borders determined by the League of Nations Mandate. An official letter has been sent to US Envoy George Mitchell, which will be followed by one to President Obama. The USA will have 30 days to respond. Otherwise Justice Now For Israel will launch a class action lawsuit against the US government for violation of international law as it concerns their demands for a return to Israeli pre-1967 borders. When the UN was created, by the way, it was legally bound to respect all previous decisions by the League of Nations. The US and the UN cannot go against their own legal agreements. A declaration of independence by Arabs living in Israel goes against international law.

6. We'll be sure to wave to the UN forces....
as our tanks roll through.
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (11.11.09)
7. A UN Resolution a Palestinian state does not make
If the Palestinians a state they truly want, then independence and a war with Israel they must win. Move to Jordan they must if they lose.
Yoda ,   Dagoba   (11.11.09)
8. final fantasy
finally the palestinian rooster laid an egg!!!!
mahmoud ,   usa   (11.11.09)
9. Keep an eye on Dahlan
I've watched this guy since Arafat's days, then he pops up in the news a couple mos ago and sent my radar back up. Then, Abba's "withdraws his name"; now this? Dahlan is a snake, not that all Fatah is not...but he's like a baby rattler that can't control the release of venom like adult snakes.
Norah ,   LA, USA   (11.11.09)
10. before 1967 they had 1967 borders
but apparently they weren't happy enough with them.
steve ,   united kingdom   (11.11.09)
11. when you just hit empty buildings, you embolden your enemy
that equals death. And that is what Israel's "leaders" have done - deliberately avoid killing the poopystinian enemy.
Dqata   (11.11.09)
12. And if the UN rejects them
They will turn around and say: "Okay, we give up. We don't want a Palestinian state any more, just give us the vote in the Kneset elections." What will the government of Israel do then?
Adam Keller ,   Holon, Israel   (11.11.09)
13. The Two States solution has reduced the prospects for peace.
The Two States solution is based on a series of erroneous assumptions, ignoring documented precedents, and therefore constituting an erroneous policy. "Israel and Palestine living side-by-side in peace," while the PLO and Hamas have been engaged in a horrific civil war, while there has not been inter-Arab peace during the last 1,400 years, while there has not been inter-Arab compliance with most inter-Arab agreements during the last 1,400 years, while there has not been a single Arab democracy during the last 1,400 years??? The Two States solution has exacerbated regional turbulence, has fueled terrorism, has promoted war and has reduced the prospects for peace, thus undermining the national security of both the US and Israel. As to the legitimacy : http://xrl.us/benher
Ron B. ,   Lod   (11.11.09)
14. PA is able to claim state since Israel has not claimed it
Since Israel has yet to claim W. Bank land the PA is legally able to set up a state but E. Jerusalem is different since Israel has claim it. The EU is already drawing up plans for this so it up to Obama to stop it or let it happen since Congress has no direct say in this. If Israel claims land it would have to offer citizenship to the Muslims living there, like it did in E. Jerusalem. Would Israel trade E. Jerusalem for settlements in W. Bank? The settlements more important for security but give up E. Jerusalem will not be easy.
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (11.11.09)
15. The governing UNSC Resolution has been 242 and wisely so
It has been based on UN Security Council Resolution 242 that Israel has reached a peace agreement with Egypt 30 years ago and with Jordan 15 years ago. It has happened because in addition to UNGA Resolution 181, 242 is a fundamental and wise resolution in the Arab Israeli relationships and the drive for an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between the sides. An attempt to change this reality, especially when in the background is the Charter of Fatah, just revised, but which still calls to "liberate" Palestine, i.e. eliminate any non-Muslim non-Arab entity between the River and the Sea; and still calling to do so with all means necessary, including "resistance" makes it clear what the PLO is attempting to have the Security Council do...!! Instead, the PLO should accept Israel's right to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people, based on League of Nations decisions and United Nations resolutions, which will truly usher a new are of peaceful coexistence for the well being of all. The fact that the Arab leadership, Palestinian and otherwise, refuse to do so and resist any demand to consider a peace agreement as the "end of the conflict" talks volumes about the true intentions of our Arab neighbors and their leadership.
Eitan ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (11.11.09)
16. lol 67 borders easr jerusalem was
on the Israeli side and before he goes for UN recognition he need peace agreement with Hamas. mmm start with peace with in your own people.
ghostq   (11.11.09)
17. nearly forgot what workes for Israel in 1948
can work for palestinians in 2009, mmm snap out of monkey sees monkey does.
ghostq   (11.11.09)
18. 12
As long as the US supports 2 states that will be the line of the UN Securty Council. This is also the only line the US can take. The political backlash would be a career killer for any president or politician that even suggested the idea of a single state would be too great so nobody would ever dare propose it even if it was their preffered solution which it certainly is for Obama. Lets say the arabs do say ok we now are going to demand a single state what happens if Israel rejects the idea? Although the Israel / palestinian problem is mistakenly compared to apartheid South Africa there is no comparison so its not a solution that can be applied here. In South Africa the blacks were citizens of the same country as the whites and they were the majority but they had no rights and what they wanted was not a state but equal rights in the country they were already citizens of. The palestinians are not and never were israeli citizens so they have no right to demand votes and citizenship because they don't have a state of their own. In theory they could demand that they all be given full american citizenship just as much as they can demand Israeli citizenship. If palestinians say Okay we give up we want a Knesset vote instead what will they do when Israel says no. When neither Israel or any of the countries that matter accept that idea what will they do?

19. They don't recognize THEY LOST A WAR. This is not like a
game of soccer where you battle and go out to the bar for a few beers afterward. These fools try every trick in the book, but they keep losing at every opportunity.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.11.09)
20. oops can't work for palis in 2009
tryping too fast and handeling something else. I need a break.
ghostq   (11.11.09)
21. the UN 48 recognition was for a statehood not nation-state
But, virtually entire Christian and Muslim population of Jerusalem was forcefully expelled from the Jewish occupation zone in 1948, while the Jews of Iraq, Morocco and Egypt enjoyed peace and prestige.
observer   (11.11.09)
22. Clearly, any attempt to replace 242 for something else is
thinly veiled one designed to undermine the foundation of peacemaking in the region. Eitan writes correctly that it was based on 242 that Egypt has reached an agreement with Israel and 15 years later Jordan did the same. 242, in other words, works. But it works only if the sides wish it to work. The Palestinians don't seem to be in that position. Just read their Charters; Hamas's from 1988 and Fatah, just revised in August 2009 which still calls for the liberation of Palestine through all means, and we know what that liberation means and the means to be employed. Is the world blind to it?
Moshe Qedmi ,   Kibbutz Lahav, Israe   (11.11.09)
23. #21 Recognition for statehood as a nation
Fabricator, if the Christian and Muslim population of Jerusalem was forcefully expelled in '48, why are they still there? Because they were not expelled.
Cynthia ,   USA   (11.11.09)
24. to #21 funny but in 1948 jerusalem was in siege
under jordan army the city was libarated in 1967 from the jordenian, you have complaints adress them to your arab brothers. mmm lack of knowledg.
ghostq   (11.11.09)
25. #21
I think you'll find it was Jews who were expelled from East Jerusalem and other Arab held areas in 1948 and not allowed to return until israel liberated them in 1967.
Phil ,   Ireland   (11.11.09)
26. to #23 there r chatholic chritian villages
in Israel the villages exist about 1400years peacfully very nice places, and the churches around Israel r very well maintained from all streams(from Greek to Lutherans), and Israel even gave refuge and established new villages for muslim refugees like the Circassians.
ghostq   (11.11.09)
27. The Palestinians are yet to accept the principle of 181
For 62 years the Arabs have rejected the principle enshrined in UN General Assembly Resolution 181 of 29 Nov 1947. The reason: it calls for, thus recognize the legitimacy of a "Jewish state" in the country. But while refusing to recognize Israel's right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people they demand that the world recognize their right to have an independent Palestinian state. This is pathetic by the standards of thinking worldwide, but not by that of the Muslim-Arabs, be it Palestinian or otherwise.
Eitan ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (11.11.09)
28. Hamas would go ballistic!!
Hamas would go ballistic if Fatah unilaterally declares independance with '67 borders.. Could NEVER happen!!
Efraïm Douieb ,   Israel   (11.11.09)
29. #6 - just like the serbs in kosovo?
Erastus CoupeDeVille ,   Ong's Hat, NJ USA   (11.11.09)
30. #23,24,25 denying Israel's breach of the very UN 48 recognit
then why the 48 Jews compelled the Arab Palestinians to sign consents before terrorizing them to leave? why they had made human-filled cargo trucks out of Arab Palestinians, if they had already consented? to help them leave?
