Budget passed for Arab street names in Jaffa    Yoav Zeitun
1. Name them after arabs & beduins killed while serving in IDF
Yerushalmi ,   Jerusalem   (11.11.09)
2. Really?
Sweet. What's the Arab word for "brazen thief" and "attempted land grab?" What's the punishment? Death? Alevai.
Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (11.11.09)
3. a disgusting misuse of recources
Tel Aviv has a whole host of problems than need some serious investment now but there isn't the money for them but they have managed to find $13,500 to change the names of 6 streets. Meretz is supposed to be a left wing party I would have thought they more than anybody would be saying the city cannot afford to waste such large sums of money on just changing street names but they are the ones who have been spearheading all of this. Also where is the moral justification for renaming streets after arabs? They refused to allow a street to be named after a jewish couple who helped found the city but they will name 6 streets after arabs and they are now pushing for more.

4. Why encourage Arabization of the Jewish Israel?
avraham ,   nyc   (11.11.09)
5. they will name them after 911 warriors.
or suicide bomber of Delphinarium or Jerusalem Pizza etc... So dont be surprised of "Arafat avenu" or "Bin Laden" street in ISRAEL!!!
Rehavam ,   Israel   (11.11.09)
6. Ohh honey... how do you think jews got that land..???
by asking the arabs for it peacefully?? nooo... they stole the land.. they killed the people that were in it and took it as their own... you call arabs land thiefs..??? jews stole that land from them.. plus since you live in New york, U.S.A.... let me ask you a question? how do you think america got their land?? peacefully?? also not.. they stole it and killed the poeple who were living in it brutally ...so next time you decide to call arabs land theifs , think about who are the real land thiefs ( Americans and Jews).. at least , here , the arabs asked for the street names by protests ( a democratic way)... but the first americans and jews who claim to be democratic stole it by forcing and killing people..
Dana ,   France   (11.11.09)
7. Sarah,avraham and other zionists:
Sarah as far as most of the world knows, you, zionists are the land thieves not the arabs, they are the indigineous population, you are the immigrants and land garbbers!
Wildmandxb ,   M.E.   (11.11.09)
8. the terrorists of 911 are not atabs.. they are muslims but
they are not arabs... plus Arafat is not a terrorist.. plus these streets were for the arabs before the jews stole them 61 years ago..
A Proud Arab   (11.11.09)
9. i wonder
how many streets would get hebrew names in a palestinian state?
steve ,   united kingdom   (11.11.09)
10. Only Arabs who serve in Tsahl should be named
We don't want our streets named after PLO murderous scum like Arafat or Abbas.
Tomer ,   Herzeliyya   (11.11.09)
11. Lets name them after the Arab Killers from 1921 Jaffa Riots!
Meretz's probably prefer that we honor the Arab Terrorist (Killers) from the 1921 Jaffa Riots. Like their grandchildren they had no problems killing women and children.
Dovid ,   Modiin   (11.11.09)
12. to 7 , Most of the democratic world knows
that vast quantities of arabs came here in the 1880's , when Jews , who bought land from arab landlords , needed workforce . And as they treated their workers much better as the arab bosses in the surrounding countries , plenty of them came from countries as far as Yemen and Sudan . But for you they are "indigenes" of course . Even today they install their tents , build some "houses" and then claim this ground as their property .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.11.09)
13. petite p. Dana in France
Tell me , when did Jews kill arabs here ? Can you give some details ? Who said : we will throw all the Jews in the sea ? Have you heard something as this from a Jew regarding arabs ? And , don't forget your own [ ? ] history . Algeria is one example to remember .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.11.09)
14. Stop denying 9/11, Proud Arab!
Take your head out of sand. The 9/11 murderers were Arabs, 15 of them from Saudi Arabia.
Avraham ,   nyc   (11.11.09)
15. beginning of the end of the jewish state...
uli   (11.11.09)
16. Dana of France, some information you want to consider
From about 5,000 BC (yes BC, I not politically correct & have no problem with it & can see no honesty in BCE) to abot 100 AD the polulation of France was Celtic & Teutonic. Where are they now, ops gone, why yep you guested it, invasions by possibly your ancestors. Now for the France attitude to Jews. Remember Dreyfus, probably not. The French (excluding the Hugenougts or French Protestants) lined up during 1939 to 44 to denounce every Jew they could. There is Jewish real estate in France that stll has not been returned to it's rightful & legal owners. Give the Norman lands back to the English, they are the legal & righful owners. The Jews were recorded as being in Israel before 1250 BC. The Arabs (their Semetic cousins or brothers) only arrived in the third century AD. Now as for the Arab refugee situation, they left for three reasons. 1 to allow a clear killing field for the Arab armies in '48 (too bad they get absolutely nothing). Those who left because they didn't want to be involved (they should be fairly & properly compensated). Those who were expelled & some were, Falajah comes to mind they should have their propertly restored or fully & fairly compensated. The standing orders for the Arab armies in '48 & '67 were, no survivors, no prisoners.

17. Good to see Arab names honoured if they deserve it
It is only fair & just to honour anyone that has merited it. The concerpt that only Jews have done "enough" to have a street named after them is dumb. There have been any Arabs as well as Druze & Chritians etc that have worked for the broader community & deserve recognition. Just ensure that it is on merit & not on tokenism, please.
John Phee ,   Sydney, AUSTRALIA   (11.11.09)
18. Name the streets after Rabbi Kahane
and Dr.Goldstein. This is our Jewish land. Not arab!

19. Budget passed for Arab street names in Jaffa
Dear Yoav Zetun, Just read with interest your article on the six streets to be named after Arab figures. I wonder, however, why the name of the Arab-American poet Kahlil Gibran is misspelled. As co-author of "Kahlil Gibran His Life and World" & wife of the poet's cousin American sculptor Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008), l suggest that the sculptor’s and the poet’s name should be spelled in accordance with their English signatures as appearing on countless letters, drawings, manuscripts, paintings, and sculptures. I often am asked to authenticate both the poet's and the sculptor’s work. Be assured, if I come across a piece signed Khalil Gibran, I confidently conclude it is a fake. It's true that some writers and critics use the modern transliteration when referring to the poet or the sculptor, but --- in the interest of: 1) Tradition; 2) Books still in print; 3) Library usage - (e.g. University of North Carolina--the location of Haskell/Gibran Journals); 4) Museum nomenclature (e.g. Telfair Academy - site of Haskell bequest of Gibran works), our position always has been that the author's and the sculptor's original signatures must be respected and retained. Thanks for considering our point of view. Sincerely, Jean Gibran
Jean Gibran ,   Boston USA   (11.12.09)
20. Who are those six ?
Emile Habibi was an Israeli Arab , communist , Knesseth Member , supporter of the 47 partition plan [ he , anti Israelis ! an Israeli Arab member of our parlement , this in what you call an "apartheid" state ! ] Gibran , look at what J. Gibran has written . Ibn Khaloun : 14th century astronomer , economist , etc . Nagib Mahfouz , a writer , and Harun al-Rashid a 8th century caliphe . did'nt find Adele Azar . This after a "tchic tchac" check . No terrorists , murderers or so . Are'nt there streets abroad named with Israeli and/or Jewish connection ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.12.09)
