'Anti-Semites have the say in Budapest'    Sarah Stricker
1. Kertesz, Antisemitism in Hungary
I was born in a Hungarian ghetto from where most of my relatives were sent to Auschwitz. Only the Allied victory saved my life. I believe by corollary that I do have sufficient moral weight to say this: While we expect - even demand the Germans and other Fascists express remorse for the Holocaust, - the Red Terror what the Communist Jews implemented first in 1919 by Bela Kun, and Rakosi after 1948 remained obfuscated and swept under the rug. No Jew EVER expressed contrition for the Bolshevik terror of Yagoda, Kaganovich, the NKVD, Cheka etc. Hungarians remember the pernicious role that Bolshevik Jews played in Hungary hence their Antisemitism: as long as victims of Bolshevism is not honored the and the Jews want to evade Marx's role, anti-Jewish sentiment will only grow.

3. #1: More proof that the Soviet mindset poisons everything
even Jews. We certainly see it in Soviet-era descendents of Jews, who have brought a horrific sense of anti-Semitism to Israel that makes the Palestinians look loyal to the state.

4. antisemitism?
If antisemitism is indeed increasing in Hungary, it can only be a result of the growing orthodox population in that country. That being so, loyal readers of this site have no need to worry: the Hungarians are doing exactly the same thing there as the seculars are are trying to achieve in Israel.

5. To #1 Tamas: Anti-Semitism in Europe
Europe and in particularly, Eastern Europe and the UK have a long history of anti-Semitism. Pogroms were the order of the day in Czarist Russia and while there were Jews in theCommunist Parties, most of the Jews in what became the USSR were persecuted and thousands sent to labor camps. So, why should we be surprised at the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe? Well all know that no one really needs an excuse to hate the Jewish people!

6. A metropolitan person belongs to Berlin!"
Berlin in many parts is Balkan, North Africa, Pali, Iraqi, Turkey (of course) and largely islamic

7. Disagree with #1
You historical analysis is lame. Kun and Rakosi did not represent Jews. Under their rule there were a total of 500 executions. Horthy alone had 10 times as many people killed in 1919. Add the hundreds of thousands killed in WW1, WW2, Nyllas terror. Order of magnitude does count. The situation in Hungary is frightening and resembles Weimar Germany: media, judiciary, stormtroopers. The situation in the world is frightening too. Oil money has bought up the media already. Obama is not Roosevelt. The situation in Israel is frightening too: Jews are restricted to live in enclaves. Can you imagine your life as a Jew in Umm al-Fahm?

8. to Tamas Reds=Jews
Yes, Tamas, some vicious communists were Jews. But most (by far) vicious communists were not Jews. Yet, you seem to blame all communist viciousness on the Jews and use that as an excuse for Hungarian anti-Semitism. There was anti-Semitism in Hungary while the Jews all lived in ghettoes. What was the excuse then? Well-poisoning? Blood for matzohs? By the way, there were lots of Jews in the US Army in WW2, who participated in the Allied victory that saved your life.

9. Reply to #7 Zoli and #8
#7 is the paradigm of the disingenuous deflection of guilt by attempting to bring up events that are not germane to the subject. The modern foundation of Antisemism is the Jewish people's perceived role in implementing Marxism-Stalinism, disseminating Communism and their stubborn denial of these facts. In the eyes of Hungarians Bela Kun, - with mere 500 executions (!!) - and Rakosi, Gero with torture and terror from 1948-1956 were just as much representational of the Bolsheviks as Eichmann was that of the Germans. #8- Read the book by "William O. McCagg Jr" A History of the Habsburg Jews 1670-1918. The entire Hungarian industrial and commercial base was built by the Jews from 1867 onward until WWI like the industrialist Weiss Manfred. My family was part of the upper echelon of the Hungarian bourgeoisie as Jews and there was no institutional Antisemitism prior to the Bolshevik takeover.

10. Being a Jew in Hungary is a nightmare!
I completely agree with Kertész, although I think he should live in Israel and not in Berlin if he cannot live in Budapest. At this time being a Jew in Hungary may be a nightmare for many of us, and "Muslim Berlin" may look like a "shiny" center of tolerance but I think Jews must raise their voice and become active "fighters of democracy" if they choose to live in Hungary, otherwise vehement antisemitism will only increase. Hungarian Jews are usually very passive by watching negative trends (antisemitism, anti-Israelism, xenophobia). It's time to raise your heads, brothers and sisters! This is what Imre Kertesz wanted to say and I completely agree with him!

11. questions
We are all human so we all make faults, don`t we? If so, then before we make a statement of something or somebody, even about a nation, we should look after if what we think is right. Just read more about Hungarian history! The nation did almostall the time what he was said so by the leaders. That is/was the bad fate of Hungarians. At the IIWW Hungary tried to capitulate, but what could a small country do against of Germany, who`s soldiers an troops fled all over in Hungary... And as so were many people who helped Jews to escape, or hide at that time not agreeing the antisemitism as so today! My family members experienced it. And than what is also not a right behavior thinking that what the politicans do or say is the same what the nation think. Few questions come to my mind reading the article above, why is he in Berlin, not in Israel? Why did he say once his roots are in Hungary, and another time they are somewhere else or even he is rootless? Why does he say that - accepting a prize as citizen of Budapest - that he got it for what he did/created he did in Budapest? And just something interesting about the famous writer - he said that during the Socialism in Hungary he never ever read a book which was permitted to read because he felt sick of them - but his greatest succes The fateless was edited in Hungary in 1975, also there were others edited in 1977 and 1988... And one more thing, why does he makes statements about Hungary, Hungarians if he does not live thre even he does not confess himself as Hungarian...?

14. They are 'anti-Jewish' and 'Jew-haters', not 'anti-Semites'
Time to retire this stupid euphemistic term 'anti-Semite', which was coined by 19th century German Jew-haters. Hebrews, Israelites, Jews...these are historical terms. But 'Semites'? This term has no bearing on any facts, other than the Semitic languages. It is a linguistic, not a racial or ethnic grouping.

15. Tamas #9: Bela Kun & Rakosi did not act in the name of Jews
They may have been of Jewish origin, but they and other likeminded Communists of Jewish origin, like Trotsky, were strongly hostile both to Jewish peoplehood and Judaic religion, and later to Zionism. As for Karl Marx, he was baptized Lutheran as an infant, and in his adult life was an avowed atheist and had nothing to do with the Jewish community. In fact, Marx wrote vociferously against the Jews in his essay 'On the Jewish Question' , denouncing them as an avaricious social class who will disappear in the the 'liberated' classless society by assimilation.
Jake   (11.18.09)
16. Reply to #9, Antisemitism prior to 1919.
Hungary had the Tiszaeszlar blood libel in 1882 and an Antisemitic Party in Parliament 37 years before any Communist takeover. So Hungarian Antisemitism was NOT caused by Jewish Communists. The "liberal" Monarchy, by the way, restricted voting rights to 6% of the population!

You don't want to comprehend the gist of this thread but that's your prerogative. Even though many German perished in the Death Camps, many even joined the resistance like Willie Brandt, still when you say "The Germans" some people cringe, and the imaginary image of an SS Obersturmanführer jump into the fore - Angela Merkel notwithstanding. Did you find wide spread love for the Germans among Jews? They tend to call Nazi every one of them. Don't confuse religion with ethnicity: even if I would convert to Buddhism my mentality, countenance and physical feature would give me away: everybody in my family were Jewish. The Bolshevik Jews were all atheist and "self-loathing Antisemitic like Chomsky, Soros, Judt but their ethnicity remained Jewish and the Hungarians associating Communism with Jewish ethnic characteristics.

18. # 1
Tamas ! You are partly right and mostly wrong, there was a perception that all Jews are communists, and primitive people will swear that this perception is true, yes some of the communist leaders were Jews, but Jews were the first victims of communism,as merchants and small manufacturers, It was a Jew named Pinchas Rotenberg, who was friendly with Alexander Kransky, the provisionaly prime minister of Russia in 1917 p Rotenberg suggested to Kransky to hang Lenin and Trotsky, unfortunately,Kransky rejected the idea, the opposition to stalin was called:the Jewish opposition, there were 2 Jews who opposed Stalin and communism openly,Osip Mandelstahm and Boris Pasternak,to compare Kun Bela and Rakosi with Eichman is silly, they did not act as emissaries of the Jewish people, while Eichman carried out the policies of a criminal but legitimate and popular German government,Kun Bela and the others acted as idividuals not as Jews, or maybe by orders of Lenin, while Racosi, like other leaders under the soviet boot ,carried out the orders of Stalin,in my opinion the reason why many Jews become communists is not because of Marxism but because of Lenin,Lenin was the first leader in history that made Antisemitism a punishable crime,(no Russian was ever prosecuted for Antisemitism ) as far Antisemitism in Hungary before kun Bela,in the 19 century a member of parlament named Eshtertsy ? suggested to expel the Jews to than Palestine,so Mr Tamas,Jews don't owe any apology to their tormenters.

19. number one.
I am deeply sorry for what you and your family suffered But I think you should know My Dad Philip rosenbloom was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He fought over France and Germany. He was in command of six B29s. So I think you could say he had some small share in the liberation of Hungary I am certainly sorry for what your family suffered and you too. But not all Jews were communist. Many Jews fled Russia and were and remain capitalist.
