Funny, I don't see those in physical labor retiring in the US at age 44. If they're not able to do heavy work by that time, they move to something else they can handle. That's apparently not the case in Israel. Just as low economic participation among the haredim is a product of government sanction and financial support, the same applies to the Arab sector. Low economic participation especially among haredi men and Arab women is a drag on Israel's economy. Compounding that by providing income in the form of government aid when they're still capable of earning a living is just nuts.

what you and everybody else may miss because the article did not give hard details is the fact that Arabs are not given much vocational training opportunities. You bemoan them for living within the norms of their experience. Now I personally don't invest emotional energy into them, but the facts are, as related to this article, all about taking the drag off the stats. Having been to Arab communties I know they cannot be compared to your US experience, where many people tell the unemployed to get off their butts. In Israel there are many differences. One of them is the infrastructures related to opportunties. For decades Arabs did most of the hard labor jobs (still do) and in recent times there has been an invasion of Thai workers taking those jobs. We are at a place now where sheer need to reoccupy those males is affecting the stats, and so now the reality is Israel much create vocational training and start it much younger so that there will be trade laborers as plumbers, etc. This will ripple up and cause a stir among the Jewish trade laborers until it all evens out. As for Haredi men, they are being pressed. Once the economy improves they will be the first to be ignored.

Arab labor is cheap and it is hard work. Shlep cement block by hand, hand mix concrete, build scaffolding to pour that concrete and remove all by physical labor... I'd retire early also considering they start work in their early teens. I am quite a Zionist BUT I do watch Israel being built with the hard labor of the Arabs. NO JEW WOULD WORK LIKE THAT PERIOD! Not many can afford this early, in the West only the wealthy (even people who work hard physical jobs can not unless have medical reason, then it is still a struggle) So, how do they live? What do they live on?

Like so many news reports I read, it doesn't add up. Here in America, a wealthier country than Israel, few can afford to stop working at such a young age. I know Israel has liberal benefits, but it still doesn't add up. Are we getting the whole story here.
