1. Jerusalem
Israel Forever ,   Israel   (12.08.09)
If Jerusalem is divided there will be civil war in Israel.
2. 'fraid not
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.09.09)
Jerusalem is the eternal, undivided (and unshared) capital of the State of Israel. This is NOT subject to negotiation. The United States, on the other hand, is free to share Washington D.C. with any country in the world. Tell you what. When the United States shares Washington D.C., Israel just might consider it. Considered and rejected out-of-hand, of course, but let's see which country the United States decides to share Washington D.C. with. Right. I'm not holding my breath, either.
3. Tony Blair said "There will be a big fight!"

4. #1 I totally agree

5. EU - capitals will be divided by the Almighty !

6. ahahhaha finally justice will prevail ...
Paco ,   Canada   (12.09.09)

8. Appropriate EU Ruling
Leon ,   Chesterville, Canada   (12.09.09)
The EU has finally found a semblance of backbone when it relates to the Middle East. Israel has already stated that they will not share Jerusalem, so the notion that negotiation was needed was nonsense. The Palestinians need EU support if there is ever going to be peace. According to the International Criminal Court ruling in 2004, East Jerusalem is "occupied Palestinian territory." Israel is not a signatory to this but most of the world is. If Israel really is a nation based on the rule of law, they should implement this ruling. Israel needs to realize that they can't simply choose to follow some and ignore others. They are not the US.
9. Ah, is anything ever truly settled in that part.............

of the world, Sarah? Politics is always the art of the possible.
10. Jerusalem for Yisrael !
S Rivera ,   Camuy,Puerto Rico   (12.09.09)
This its the most stupid idea, how they going to divide the capital of a State Of Israel, Its that happen all the people who give they live for Israel is going to be in vain, This is the time to tight up yours pants and fight for the capital, if you don't fight all the arabs going to look Israel like a coward state !
11. Jerusalem and to #2
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.09.09)
Under what international law does one country have the right to decide on the capital of another country??? If somebody wants Jerusalem, let them do what Israel did: take it back. As for Washington, D.C. forget about sharing it. Just bulldoze it into the Atlantic with the politicians in it.
12. Ah...Sarah.
Bob ,   NYC, USA   (12.09.09)
One can see how loyal you are to the US. But what can one expect from a maritime slip and fall lawyer. Jerusalem shall be divided and you will like it. Hold your breath as you may, I will enjoy your azure complexion.
13. Israel needs to tell EU to "butt out!"
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (12.09.09)
For Sweden to insist East Jerusalem should be the capital of Palestine before it treats WEST Jerusalem as the capital of Israel takes a bit of chutzpah. Moreover their proposal is nothing less than a repudiation of UNSC 242, which does NOT reference Jerusalem - or the Palestinians for that matter - and clearly implies a border beyond the pre-1967 lines. It's therefore clear they should recuse themselves from the Quartet, as they're abandoned the role of honest broker, and adopted a blatantly partisan stance.
14. You call this soft?
BBSNews ,   Charlotte, NC   (12.09.09)
"8. The Council is deeply concerned about the situation in East Jerusalem. In view of recent incidents, it calls on all parties to refrain from provocative actions. The Council recalls that it has never recognised the annexation of East Jerusalem. If there is to be a genuine peace, a way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of two states. The Council calls for the reopening of Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem in accordance with the Roadmap. It also calls on the Israeli government to cease all discriminatory treatment of Palestinians in East Jerusalem." In fact the whole statement reads like one of my talkbacks. Jerusalem - future capital of both states. CHECK. "The Council reiterates that settlements, the separation barrier where built on occupied land, demolition of homes and evictions are illegal under international law, constitute an obstacle to peace and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible. The Council urges the government of Israel to immediately end all settlement activities, in East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank and including natural growth, and to dismantle all outposts erected since March 2001." CHECK
15. It is time for nations of the world ....
Psalms 83 ,   Selah   (12.09.09)
to read the book of the prophet ZECHARIAH it tells about what will happen to the nations that set out to divide Jerusalem in the laterdays...
16. Divide Jerusalem???
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (12.09.09)
Pure garbage. Which Arab capital will be divided with Israel?? No; gee whiz what a surprise. The EU wants to allow Jerusalem to be both an Israeli and an Arab capital. Tell you when the first european capital such as London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Vienna, Prague, Geneva, Moscow are will to share their areas with Israel, then there might be an opportunity to talk. Until then, the EU can take their obvious BS and insert it where the sun doesn't shine. Even the UN, the voice of the Arab world, doesn't have the stupidity to try that garbage. Tony Blair can give London to his Arab friends, provided the Queen and her current PM agree. Won't happen !!! Israel is not ready to be a vassel state in the Arab world.
17.  EU
jamil ,   US   (12.09.09)
Israel and Jerusalem existed prior to EU . EU is not relevant to Israel determining its own capital. The final EU wording does not state Jerusalem must be divided. An Arabs Pal state has been an option and they have had that chance since 1948.
18. another
dan ,   nyc   (12.09.09)
heres an analysis thats pretty middle of the road- supportive of israel but also acknowledging a palestinian state will emerge http://israel.foreignpolicyblogs.com/2009/12/08/the-building-of-a-wall-this-time-by-the-eu/
19. Israel will have to make deal with PA over J'lm but what?
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (12.09.09)
The is only a delay and a signal that if Israel doesn't make some kind of deal over E. Jerusalem then EU and others will. Next year is likely to see talks restarting but the question is can progress be made or will Israel and PA just delay while building restarts.
20. "Disputed city", no, certainly not!
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
Jerusalem has never been the capital city of any people or state but that of the Jewish people and the state of Israel. There is no dispute! What there is on the part of the Muslim-Arabs - not Christians, not Druze - is a desire to covet the city; to take it away from the Jews, just as they wish to take over the entire country. When Jerusalem, between the years 1948 and 1967, was under total Arab control, Jew-free, "cleansed" of its Jewish residents by the Arabs, together with the Jews from Samaria, Judea and Gaza, no independent Arab state was set up and Jerusalem was not considered the capital city. Only when the Jews of Israel, in the defensive war of June 1967, Six-Day War, did the Muslim-Arabs begin to desire Jerusalem. Thus, there is no "dispute" here since Jerusalem is and has been the eternal capital city of the Jewish people for over 3,000 years and will continue to be so.
21. Jerusalem divided??

23. #9..CAMERON, USA....YOU WILL FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF...
ABRAHAM ben JACOB ,   CANADA   (12.09.09)
WHEN THE MEXICANS START TO OUTNUMER YOU CAMERON AND WHEN THEY START COMING IN A BIG WAY TO RECLAIM VAST AREAS OF LAND IN TEXAS, CALIFORNIA. THEN YOU WILL KNOW, AND THEN OTHER PEOPLE WILL SAY ABOUT YOU, THE USA, WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT OTHERS ............... " Ah, is anything ever truly settled in that part of the world,.." WE IN CANADA DO NOT HOPE FOR THIS AS WE WANT A GOOD AND STABLE U.S. NEIGHBOUR .
24. Real solution
Lewis ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
What is the real practical solution? Israel should transfer the Jerusalem neighborhood of Meah Shearim to the Palestian state. This way, we rid ourselves of tens of thousands of violent anti-Zionists, and we thus respond positively to internatonal presssures regarding Jerusalem. The result would be a better, safer Jerusalem.
25. Possibly so, ABRAHAM
Cameron ,   USA   (12.09.09)
For your part, given the no. of Muslims pouring into Canada every year, the times ahead will be very interesting and uneasy for Canadians. Your problems with the French in Quebec will seem passing mild compared to what that Islamic lot are going to be throwing at you. Challenges for everyone!
26. Jerusalem is Jewish, will remain Jewish and should not ...e
Ron B. ,   Lod   (12.09.09)
Jerusalem is Jewish, will remain Jewish and should not be up for negotiation The true demographic threat in Jerusalem is the freezing of Jewish building and the limitations placed on the natural growth of the capital by diplomatic initiatives, unless you expand the border of Jerusalem, including Arab neighborhoods – you wont have the area required to allow Jerusalem to expand. In order for Jerusalem to bloom and expand it should remain Jewish and entirely under Israeli sovereignty. Jerusalem should not be up for negotiation, it has always been the symbol of Jewish unity as explained at : http://xrl.us/bjheo

Zechariah 12 1The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD who stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him: 2"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people. All who burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. 8"In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David, and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. 9And it shall come to pass in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him as one who is in bitterness for his firstborn. Zechariah 14 1Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 2For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished. And half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3Then shall the LORD go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle. 4And His feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWSATpx7uzk Arn-Orao.
28. A disputed city?
r cummimgs ,   uk   (12.09.09)
It is better to deal in the facts rather than emotive nationalist claims, Yehuda Ben Israel. Jerusalem has been the capital of a dozen or more tribes, races and religions, many before the Jews and many after. The Jewish claim to be the unique one stems from a book written by Jews for Jews. It is less convincing to the rest of the world. East J'sem is indeed occupied land. Israel seized it in 1967, which was lawful under the law of 'belligerent occupation'. However, military occupation does not, under international law, entitle an army to (a) gain territory (b) annex territory (c) settle its own people on that territory or (d) change the administrative borders of that territory. This is because an army occupation does not affect the sovereignty of a territory, which resides in the civil power. In the case of the occupied municipality of E J'sem, the civil power resides with the PA. No changes in status can be effected without their express agreement. Israel has flagrantly breached international law, the UN Charter and Geneva Convention 4 in respect of (a) - (d) above, and also in applying Israeli law in an occupied territory. In a nutshell, there is nothing 'disputed' about these facts. Israel does not have a legal leg to stand on ref E J'sem, which is why NO country in the world recognises its 'annexation' or is prepared to condone it by moving their embassy there. Ethno-religious, nationalist claims and wish-dreams very rarely translate into reality, as people like the Serbs found pursuing a similar 'Eretz Serrbia' crusade in Bosnia and Kosovo. Most of the leaders are now behind bars in the Hague.
29. To: No. 12
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.09.09)
Not quite, dear. I do mostly charterparty breaches. Protection and indemnity clubs do FD&D, under which category crew injuries fall. Jerusalem will never be divided. Hell, the Palestinian Arabs turned down an offer for a two-state solution which would have included East Jerusalem. What does that tell you about Arab malevolence, Arab lies and Arab intent?
30. To: Cameron at No. 9
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.09.09)
Sure. I agree. I am waiting patiently for each of the thirty-odd terrorist organizations each purporting to be the sole true representatives of the Palestinian Arab people to repudiate their charters calling for the destruction of the Israel and the extermination and/or expulsion of the Jewish people, and for the explicit recognition by these Palestinian Arab organizations that the State of Israel has an inalienable right to exist in its ancient homeland. Absent that, Cameron, nothing is possible. I think you know that. So, unless and until, dear, facts on the ground must prevail. That would be six wars, each started by Arabs and won by Jews. Kind of hard to argue with that, wouldn't you agree? I wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
