What do you mean something new? Keeping Shabbat IS part of the 10 commandments... Though I don't think closing on Shabbat should be a condition of a business license. There are plenty of non Jews in Israel that would be affected. Also there are plenty of Kosher workplaces to hire people who'd like to observe.

So if Europe is better because you want off on the Christian Sabbath and work on the jewish one why are you in Israel. But Israel is a democracy and the Israeli people have through their elected representatives created this rest law that is the secular law of the land. To be a democracy Israel must follow the law the knesset legislates. The law is Saturday is the day of rest fot the state of Israel not Sunday. The anti democrartic incitement of the left should be ignored and the law of the state enforced

Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot, Israel   (01.13.10)
The Torah forbids work on the Sabbath, but, what is work? Work was originally defined by the rabbis as the activities done to build the temple. Over the centuries rabbis grappled with defining new developments as work or not work. We now live in a urban society as opposed to an agricultural society. But, farm work itself is no longer the same. What is urgently needed is redefinition of work and rest constant with life in the 21st century. Moral or religious laws beyond the basics are doomed to failure just like prohibition in the U.S

And if people want to open their businness on Shabbat , that should be allowed . They have to choose AN OTHER rest day . That's because otherwise people will work 7/7 , and that is wrong in the whole world . The Knesseth can legislate in an other way . For official instanties , rest day Shabbat . For businnesses one rest day a week . But why should i have to stay at home because there are NO buses this day ? Why should i have to pay 60 sh for a taxi , instead of less than 5 with a bus ?
