You say the cost will effect the west (keeping in mind you posted from london and this effects you!) you seem to think that the loss of the oil from the middle east will have a huge effect when you forget that we have some of the largest oil fields over here and we arn't consuming it, we are consuming the middle easts oil. When it dries up you'll be paying us my friend.

If you guys take a good look at a map,you could easily notice that iran has the most shores next to the persian gulf. How hard would it be to launch missiles or artillery towards the ships stationed in the persian gulf??. Contrary to popular belief,it would be very hard to stop those attack(via air strikes,or ground assaults). The sunburn missiles max just mentioned are very hard to destroy,before they reach their targets( I did a little search on them,and yes iran does have those). War with iran would be very costly,and as one US states department official once said: Anyone can go to Baghdad,real men go to Tehran(you can search that quote and read it for your self). PS: Those of you who say that iran didn't defeat iraq in the 8 year war,well I have news for you. Back then iraq had full international support(it's airforce was rebuilt 5 times during that war,most European countries fully supported it during its war with iran and last but not least,lets not forget the US was also politically on iraqs side and they also sent Donald Rumsfeld to iraq for talks),iraq made use of chemical weapons(causing a lot of damage to the iranian troops at the end of the war when iranians were advancing into iraqi soil). On the other hand Iran was under arms embargo and had lost its military in the chaos that came after the revolution(most generals and pilots were executed by the newly established islamic republic). Saddam never dared to oppose iran when the shah of iran was in power(he was also forced to accept the algeria deal,regarding the dispute over the Arvand river,which separates the 2 countries in the south). While on the other hand,before the US decided to strike iraq,that country had been under crippling sanctions for nearly a decade and had lost what ever it had left. So please be realistic and tell me,which one was a fair fight??

Peter, Your research is not complete, you failed to look at current technology that already can knock mortar and rocket rounds out of the sky (C-Ram) or the fact that even if Iran hits those surface ships in the gulf that leaves several subs in the region to retaliate, the best defence is a good offence and we have the best over here my friend.
