US flight diverted after tefillin mistaken as bomb    Associated Press
1. PERFECTLY LOGICAL MOVE BY THE PILOTS
tfilin are not very well known to the goyim... and could just as well have been explosive devices in the eyes of the goyim. this passenger should have known better than to wear his religion on his sleeves and could have refrained from the use of these religious devices.

2. Flight was out of New York, pilots should know better
Gavriel ,   US   (01.21.10)
3. #1 stuyde ham. I detest the use of the world goyim
You over used it, why don't you just say say non jews??. Would you refer to non Jews as 'the goyim' when you are back wherever you originated from? as from your language, I assume English is your mother tounge and you read the English version of ynet.
Esther ,   New York   (01.21.10)
4. Silly Pilot
He could have called someone at his headquarters and had her/him googled "Tefillin" to verify it in less time than it would have taken to land. As it is he inconvenienced the passangers on this flight, the next flight, and perhaps another one. He cost his airline the extra landing and crew costs. All for what would have taken less than two minutes to verify.
Aryeh ,   NY, USA   (01.21.10)
5. Good Lord!
Maybe my fellow Jews should stop putting on tefilin on commercial airplanes. Do they expect everyone in the world to know religious Jewish rituals? The pilot absolutly did the right thing. The guy is a stupid idiot.
Joe ,   Las Vegas   (01.21.10)
6. Considerations
Sometimes, when there are no options available, one has to pray on board a plane (eg long-distance connected flights) - it's always wise to explain in advance to a member of the cabin crew just what's going on, and arrange a place to stand that will not disturb. But sometimes people take advantage of a relatively short flight to cram in their prayers when they could have delayed the flight or delayed their prayers. Even though one could still arrange with cabin crew etc, it doesn't say very much about one's respect for the prayers, or for one's consideration of other people.

7. If this was a British airline, American talkbackers would be
screaming Brit anti semites/Londonstan, the usual.. But no such reaction from Americans.. Just thought I'd throw that out there, you know it's true.
Gabriel ,   Jerusalem   (01.21.10)
8. response to #1
The passenger should be proud to wear his religion on his sleeve. What are we in Nazi Germany. We should all be proud to be Jews and preform daily rituals.
Smith ,   USA   (01.21.10)
9. "I know what these are" - a personal tale
Lesson One in the security training for cabin attendants should read: "Jews don't blow up planes." Seriously, did the attendant think those leather straps were a fuse? I recall going through the airport in Montreal back in the 1970s (I was studying at McGill). As the inspector was going through my carry-on, he pulls out the tefillin bag. As I was about to tell him what it was, he smiled and said "I know what these are" and repacked it.

11. 7. don't presume to know us as u obviously do NOT

12. Tefillin on Flight?
The flight from NYC to Louisville is approximately 2 hours. Couldn't this passenger have donned his tefillin before he left or after he landed? Clearly this man had his head in the ground in terms of today's flying climate. I agree w/Aryeh in #4-whatever inconvenience this man caused he should be financially responsible for.
Keith ,   Los Angeles, CA, USA   (01.21.10)
13. Stupid thing to do but he is only 17. Ignorance
Putting on Tefilin is scary for ignorant people. He should not have done it but he is only 17. I did at 16 on a Greek plane and freaked my 2 neighbors. I no longer pray in public.

15. #3 - GOYIM IS A PERFECTLY RESPECTABLE WORD
AND IS EVEN FOUND IN SUCH THINGS AS YAKOV'S BLESSINGS IN your very own torah.
stude ham   (01.21.10)
16. #8 - LITTLE BLACK BOXES ARE FRIGHTENING
especially to the goyim who do not know what phylacteries just happen to be. that is why the insensitive kid was questioned and that is why the pilot made an emergency landing. the insensitive kid could have done his matinals without dragging out those black boxes which most probably frightened everyone else on board. that kid should have known the consequences of his actions... especially after all those mad bombers caused paranoid air security regulations and uneasy discomfort among the flyers.
stude ham   (01.21.10)
17. Power like a bomb
A great story! Great that this young man confessed his faith openly. Great to think and experience that The Word of God and prayer founded on it is so powerful that it was taken for a bomb. - Also a sad story though. Has the training of pilots become so secularized that religion is not only excluded from it, but cannot even be recognized? And have modern men become so scared that they become even ridiculous in their behaviour our of fear? What, I ask as a non-Jewish believer in the God of Israel, can you do better than pray on a plane?!
Dorothea Killus ,   Loerrach, Germany   (01.21.10)
18. The christians don't know their religion ?
They don't know jesus you call ribi yeshua ? Only you call him so , NO TRUE JEW will do it . No true ORTHODOX JEW will accept him as you do . But you have a reason to accept him : You are a Christian TOO , under a Jewish "mask" with a self proclaimed conversion , NO TRUE ORTHODOX Rabbanut , Nor any TRUE Jew , religious or secular Atheist , will even consider you as Jewish . Those who consider you as such are insulting the Jewish PEOPLE .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.21.10)
19. To all talkbackers
The Talmud explains that it is forbidden )for the very reasons in this article) to undertake private prayer ritual etc. in front of Non-Jews. Tefillin, shaking a Lulav are examples given and can only be interpreted at best as ridiculous and at worst as threatening. Jews pray with a Minyan in private or in a synagogue (without non-Jewish observers) or in public in our own country Israel.
Shimon ,   Poleg   (01.21.10)
20. flight attendants should be educated on this
i recall a similar episode a few yearsa ago also. i am a physician and we got training in culture specific practices that are rare but we may come across (e.g. the practice of "coining" young children that can be mistken for child abuse). his type of thing should be taught to flight attendants.

24. Re:18. The christians don't know their religion ?
I have the growing feeling - many of the families today that we concider gentile ..may in the past had a jewish heirtage...as is with my name Galutia - the root Galut (galus)is of jewish origin dating back to the first dispersion in babylon...yet when a Daniel Galusha came to america he was a Christian... I am guessing at some point there was a persquetion that forced a jewish to christian conversion... I also suspect there are many many others with a simialar history...perhaps Gods way of hiding his people underthe noses of those that would eliminate them. Also remember the early church was virtualy All Jews for 15 to 20 years after Jesus died and was raised from the dead. Yes Jew would like to see that fact buried ...but one day will have thier eyes opened.

26. The Pilot was Wrong.
1. Only the nation of Israel respects and follows the Torah of Moses. 2. The pilot likes cheeseburgers. 3. Expect differences in the way Torah observant Jews live, and the way others live. 4. The Pilot needs to get educated about Tefillin,... (then he can go back to ignoring the Torah).
Ezra ,   US   (01.21.10)
27. HELLO, use the phone!
They should have called it in. I am sure someone at LaGuardia tower must know about tefillin. There are enormous number of frum people going through LaGuardia and JFK and many of them daven on the plane.
Harold ,   NY, USA   (01.21.10)
28. Coorrect Me If I'm Wrong But I Always Thought "Goyim"...
was a derogatory term. I always thought it was similar to a person calling a black the "N" word or calling a jew a "kike". Am I wrong? I doubt this post will be allowed as I dared to use the 'K' word but I frequently see the word "Goyim" used by Jewish posters on this site. If it is a derogatory term then why does Ynet allow its use?

i am a non jew. when i travel all over i know what tefilin is and i know that it is not a bomb. no jew ever has had a bomb on a flight at all. you should not mistake them for muslims. everyone has seen in ads and in news this item. only ignorants do not know what it is and that it doesn't present any danger. the pilot and some of the passangers were just ignorant. but then again, most americans are absolutely ignorant. american in europe

jews need to pray at various times of the day. at least the observant ones. everyone knows what these gadgets are, particularly coming out of n.y. which is the highest jewish population in the world except for israel. do muslims that pull rugs in planes need to explain to the pilot what they are doing?
