it is not a derogatory term. it is a yidish name for a non jew. pure and simple. there is no insult in that.

around some passenger's neck.
He wasn't tied up or handcuffed so just how scared were they.
Just a chance for the pilot to look like a big shot.

35. Funny article & sad at the same time
This article is so funny because the pilot & crew got scared out of their wits and decided to land. Sad because it was out ignorance.
1) Airline personnel should be trained a little bit better.
2) The kid is only 17. Maybe with what's going on in this World, he was scarred of flying and did not want to die so young so he took refuge in his religion, even if it was wrong for many reasons.
3) I only experienced men putting on Tefillin at the back of a plane while travelling to Israel & returning. Shimon( # 19) is right. A minyan (10 men) is needed and no, I am not talking about "filet mignon" which is meat.
I am also not creasy about the words “Goy or Goyim”…why not just say non-Jew? All in all, I think Ynet is willing to print just about anything and that's the funny & sad part.

39. Tefillin on flight: Please consider that
having tefillin and sneaking in an explosive within the box framework would be an achievable ploy for a suicide terrorist. Do these things happen? Let me give you a for instance: In Israel, a young soldier was hitchhiking and was picked up by two men dressed as Charedim. It turned out that the two were Arabs who were searching for a victim. The young man was brutally strangled and left on the roadside for dead This happened about one decade ago. The story was all over the news at the time the body was found and the perpetrators caught. I, myself, happened to meet his uncle, a former IDF man and bodyguard, now retired. He told me the story. In today's climate of terrorism and violence, I would not want to have to deal with tefillin and any suspicions about what they could be hiding.

40. Better Safe Than Sorry
1. The youth does not know the Talmud, he should not have put on his tiffilin in front of non-Jews.
2. There was no reason to pray on that flight, he could have done it before or after.
3. Jews should not and cannot expect non-Jews to know about tiffilin.
4. The pilot was correct as he did know about tifflin, he took no chances and landed his plane.
5. As stated in onother talkback, if the youth felt he must pray on this flight, he should have made arrangements with the flight crew.
6. In these timesit is best to take safety first.

-his mixing christianity and judaism is an affront to both faiths -
Christianity at its inception consisted of Jews it wasn't till 15 or 20 years later that non jews were included.... thru Pauls ministry
I don't always agree 100% with paquid ...
|
|
45. 44 - what DO you agree with teh pakeed about?
for example, take away his christian bashing and what is left? he talks about keeping torah and all, but what about his being the "16th paqid" of israel? what about his weird teachings about jesus (which jews should accept as authoritative)? is this acceptable, or is it ok as long as he engages in the other stuff above? just wondering.

We agree on some elements of the early church...but disagree on validity of some of the new testament books....
one must bear in mind he is a member of the menza society....
many not all of those in menza tend to see themselves above reproach when it comes to intelectual issues... I used to work with a lady that was in menza ..and frequently saw her take offence when she was chalenged on one issue or another.

most of the disscussions I had with him related to new testament documentation ... I saved a couple discussions but did not save others...it has been a better part of a year since I last engaged him...as for other area out side judaism and christianity ... I don't believe I have
But he came off as arrogant and that only his view was correct....I am sure there is some areas he is but when he ,as you say , Demonizes others in the discussion ,his aurguments loses legitimacy...

well, in all honesty, each one of us thinks our view is the correct one. the difference is how we communicate our view to others and how we treat them when there is a disagreement.
mensa's have a reputation of lacking basic social skills, not to mention the fact that despite their supposed greater mental acumen they haven't made a relatively proportional positive contribution to society. it's a shame that the bad aspects of personality override and negate the potential good.

55. #9 How sweet
"I recall going through the airport in Montreal back in the 1970s (I was studying at McGill). As the inspector was going through my carry-on, he pulls out the tefillin bag. As I was about to tell him what it was, he smiled and said "I know what these are" and repacked it."
But this isn't the "70s.

59. To: No. 57 - Second Attempt
First of all, I don't HAVE to explain anything to you. Moreover, we are of different faiths and will necessarily draw different conclusions. That said, the four passages known as the Songs of the Suffering Servant, which Christians believe prefigure the coming of Jesus Christ, are considered by Jews to refer to the nation of Israel.
However, since you mention the Book of Isaiah, doesn't Isaiah also comment on what the coming of the Messiah will herald? Yes, he does. I refer you to Isaiah 2:4:
"They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore."
Whatever else Christ may have achieved, peace, harmony and brotherhood surely haven't been a part. That's why Christianity had to invent a second coming to begin with.
As to Psalm 22:16 -- I will defer to Tim Hegg, a Baptist minister, to explain it to you:
