Netanyahu heading to war    Eyal Megged
1. Iran will be in also
shahab -> 5   (02.08.10)
2. Mr. Eyal Megged __ "Eretz Israel" __ "Land of Israel"
*Demise*   (02.08.10)
3. the price for
peace with syria is too high. the golan is now and will always be Israeli. otherwise they are sitting ducks .the arabs WILL use this strategic ground to once and for all try to eliminate the Jewish state
Barney ,   USA   (02.08.10)
4. War a necssary evil before Peace
It needs to happen. Lieberman and co are right. Only after a decisive war in which Israel is victorious will Peace be possible with our defeated enemies. The other "peace " talked about will ensure Israel ceases to exist
DT ,   TA Israel   (02.08.10)
5. Damascus
Isaiah 17:1 - It WILL happen one of these days!
Norway   (02.08.10)
6. Si vis pace para bellum
The only way to have a peace with Syria is to put Assad away. And sure, a war will be necessary. If it is the price, it must be paid.
Norman ,   france, Eurabia   (02.08.10)
7. So idiotic! what about 250km range missile
that syria gives to hezballah???? such a poor analysis, such blindless. ynet youre dispointing me
stephane ,   tel aviv   (02.08.10)
8. demented and ridiculous article
We've had de facto peace with Syria for 37 years, and I can spell the reason for it in five letters--G-o-l-a-n. Syria is deterred and has been for close to four decades--obviously. Megged wants us to GIVE UP MORE LAND--even on a front where we already had peace. We gave up Sinai and now it's a major smuggling routes for terrorists and weaponry. We gave up Gaza and southern Lebanon, and the results aren't too peaceful, are they? Megged, stop the self-flagellation, what's wrong with you? Go to a shrink. Ask him why you fantasize that the brutal dictator Bashar Assad is a poor dear who's rejected by the cruel Israelis. What kind of diseased projection is your mind performing?
Pheppsie ,   Netanya   (02.08.10)
9. I was find out that part of the Golan was
bought by jews in 1881 from bedouins, so the golan land isn't belong to syria either way. this I didn't invent it is for real, just because Syria conquered it, it doesn't mean it's theirs. I didn't find more info about Isac Loebel but he was the head of the comeety who bought the lands in the golan. so if you by something from arab it's yours.
ghostq   (02.08.10)
10. What an idiot! Can Eyal guarantee that Syria wants peace?
Eyal starts with a dangerously wrong assumption that Syria wants peace. All the signs are that Syria does NOT want peace - moreover, it plans with Iran the destruction of Israel. Now, WHEN and IF Syria will make significant ACTIONS for peace - not only empty words (which are rare anyway), we can start discussing the Peace with Syria option. For as long as Syria prepares for war and not for peace, we better prepare for war too. And war will come whether Eyal or Netanyahu want it or not. Because Syria never abandoned its dream of domination over Israel, "palestine" and Lebanon. Golan Heigts is just a pretense for not moving on. If Syria really wanted Peace, they would have done the same as President Saadat and King Hussain of Jordan who now have all the territories they lost in their wars of aggression against Israel. But Syria wants ALL of Israel and so it builds its arsenal and its strategic ties with Israel's mortal enemy: Iran. So Eyal, stop trying to blind us and get out from under the rock you've been living and be thankful that Israel has enough military capability to keep dictators like Assad and Ahmedinejad in check - for now.
(02.08.10)
11. Peace with Syria is impossible...
...at least for now. The Syrians work for Iran, and by extension Russia. As long as that's the case, true peace between Israel and Syria isn't going to happen. Also, look at Turkey. They are moving into the Iranian and Russian sphere of influence. See what's happening to Israeli-Turkish relations? Are you going to blame Bibi for that, too?
Chonny ,   Colorado, US   (02.08.10)
12. as pathetic an article as I have ever read!!
ari ,   israel   (02.08.10)
13. What a stupid column
Basically the column says that Syria has the power to force the return of the Golan. If so, what other power does Syria have? Can it force a return to 1967 borders, to the original UN partition plan, or maybe it can just destroy Israel. Or does Mr. Megged believe that Israel should depend on the "kindness of strangers"? That the Arabs will let Israel survive even though they have the power to destroy it. Two millenia have taught the Jewish people how safe it is to depend on the kindness of strangers.
Sidney ,   USA   (02.08.10)
14. One eyed analysis
Good to see how in some ghettos the only warmongers are some Israelis. This king of thinking inevitably arrives to the conclusion that the source of all conflict in the world is the existence of Israel. Time to convert and to get out of the close Ayoub Megullah.
Uzziel   (02.08.10)
15. NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You want to give the Golan for peace, not only will we not have peace, but we will loose our deterrence. Than we have even more fighting. Peace for peace, nothing else. If we are attacked, than we take more. That's all there is to it. The guy who wrote this article is real goofy.
Brian ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.08.10)
16. Alarmist making a mountain of Syria
It is time to stop this nonsense of making a mountain of Syria. Syria is irrelevant and is small factor in any war in the region. War in the region is caused by Islamist-Jihadism or Islam. As Islamist scholar, Omar Abdel Rahman, explains, "There is no surah called 'peace.' Jihad and killing are the head of Islam. If you take them out, you cut off the head of Islam." (p.24, "Islam and Terrorism" [2002] by Mark A. Gabriel, PhD) The ultimate goal of Islamist Jihadism is to subdue, dominate and islamize the whole non-Islamist world which they call Dar Al Harb and turn it to Dar Al Islam (House of Islam) as commanded by their koranic god. A strong Israel is the only deterrent against its enemies' aggression. Don't fall for the Syrian 'peace' crap which is a big Taqiyya to fool Israel so that the dark forces can achieve their Charter that calls for the destruction of Israel.

17. bringing war
Megged supported Rabin and Peres whose failures led to the first Oslo War. Megged condemned Netanyahu who ended that war. Megged supported Barak whose failures led to the second Oslo War. Megged condemned Sharon's first government that ended that war. Megged supported Sharon and Olmert, whose failures brought the Second Lebanon War and Cast Lead Operation. In total , Megged failed 4 times in predicting how a war would start, and failed twice in predicting how a war would be finished. With such a bad record, why would anyone listen to Megged's prediction?
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (02.08.10)
18. Heading to war
Israel, sir, is already at war! You need to pull your head out of your rectum and stop living in denial. Stop pointing your finger at BIBI and write some articles about your muslim "friends". You have to wonder about a "Jew" that would believe it's Israel's fault? Traitor.
william borchers ,   swansboro USA   (02.08.10)
19. eyad megged
eyad is a poet similar to grossman, beilin, ben-ami, sarid. Now, he is saying bibi does not believe inpeace with assad which is true and i agree with bibi. He says after a terrible war, israel would be made to sign the same deal as it rejected before. No, war costs both sides and after, if it is a good deal, israel signs with free will and both sides have been sobered. megged well illustrates the defect that the jews have since 2000 years. fear, run to the master assad, hide, war and guns are terrible, no, please don't hurt the jew. This was the mindset of many good jews who went into the gas chamber expecially the haredi.Instead of bielskis, they went to their deaths. Now back to megged--in olmert's deffense, he offered the arabs almost everything, did not react to provocations and had a war forced on him for which he was untrained and out of his element as he oil and war with the military and hates it.Yet the arabs knowing they had him by the throat, still wanted more, capitulation. They syrians want goln, palestine with a zimmi jewish minority. Since 73, they have embarked on the terror army project with iran, using hezbollah and now hamas and jihad as their spear. They have done everything in their power to kill israelis, accusing jews of being christ kilers. Who is megged trying to fool? You are one of the weak, blinded beilinist, paralyzed by fear of violence and war.I would be surprised if you did any notable military service. Rather like olmert, suspicious injuries or avoidanace like his son-outright cowards. Liebrman and bibi are showing some resolve in the face of blood curdling arab threats and standing up. Yoiu, sarid, beilin, olmert and livni-give them, give them more, talk peace, sign a deal. Jews have to expung this almost genetic trait of cowardice from their veins. All the haredi should have to do martial arts and then army. Torah is no excuse. All the rabbis should in addition to their study, betrained in martial arts and do idf duty if they are able. Megged, similiar to most of the ben ami beilin crowed, though education and having the odd good idea, basically are miserable cowards afraid of combat. Israel cannot afford them. if they cannot change into really being israelis, they should leave israel and hide in a cave in some other country. six million died to listen to this gibberish from pathetic cowards!!??
alexi   (02.08.10)
20. Golan = Israel = Security
The Golan is part of Israel. It has been part of Israel longer than it was with Syria. Syria would let Israel leave the Golan and Israel would get a piece of Paper NOT PEACE. This per ASSAD. When Syria had the Golan they used to attach Israel. Now Damascus is vulnerable from the Golan Heights.
Garrison Katz ,   USA   (02.08.10)
21. What is megged smoking ???
What made the syrians go to war in 1967 ??? Israel needs the Golan for strategic purposes.
Norman   (02.08.10)
22. Eyal, have you lost your marbles?
So now, you have drifted back into naive leftness? Do you seriously think for a moment that giving the Golan back to Syria and bowing to Syria's demand for a border up to the Kinneret will make Syria peaceful? Syria lost the Golan in the first place because it was not peaceful. Do you really want Dmascus to be able to stand on the Golan and see all the Israeli towns in the Galil all the way down to Degania?? giving one inch to jihad is to cower before jihad. Don't sink into the dhimmitude of so many of your fellow writers.
bob ,   potomac, md   (02.08.10)
23. peace with syria
Megged's article is a sad commentary on peace activists. it says that no matter the risks, sign any deal, give up the golan and hope that assad really exchanges iran for modern ambassadors. These are the words of a gutless coward, afraid to pull a trigger, ashamed of israel, and hoping for some poetic paradise where jews and arab live in harmony. Megged belongs like haber in a hospital for pacifists with depression. Olmert was bad enough, but at least in cast lead he said-hit them when barak said lets stop now. Hit them so they learn a lesson. Ask one million israelis who they are happier with, olmert of bibbi and lieberman. Megged, if antidepressans cannot help you, then jump off a cliff to end your nightmares. Israel is not going into the gas chambers again. And if it has to go down, it will do so with guns blazing unlike the bloody wimp that you are.
mohson   (02.08.10)
24. Knowing the Cost
Mr. Megged is correct about one thing. The cost of a "negotiated" peace is well known. It includes the Golan, all of Judea & Samaria, Jerusalem and ultimately the Galilee, Central Coastal Israel and the Negev. If Mr. Megged is willing to give up his country so that he may live in "peace", he should find another place to live.
Bruce Abrams ,   Efrat, Israel   (02.08.10)
25. To 19 Alexi
Sir, I strongly agree with your clever and accurate comments in your post. BRAVO !! AM ISRAEL CHAI
dave ,   Bs.Aires-Argentina   (02.08.10)
26. Assad can't make peace.
He's an Alawite ruler of a Sunni country. The Alawites are bitterly resented, and have been using the hatred of Israel to funnel off anger. If Assad signs a peace treaty with Israel, he will not actually make peace, because if he does so his junta will collapse. So don't buy into the happy-optimistic BS; just keep things going quietly with Syria. Some day, the junta will fall and someone will take power there who may actually see peace as a vital interest.
Zzzzz   (02.08.10)
27. Naive View
Assad is not a partner for peace. No one wants a war or even the ongoing friction between Israel and Syria but really one cannot think that Assad would even sit down with Bibi. It is not in Assad's interest to actually talk it is only in his interest to sound like he MIGHT talk. Even Assad said recently that the Golan was not sufficient for peace. If you dont solve Iran and Hezbollah first you cannot solve Syria and its puppet leader, Assad.
Mike ,   Edmond USA   (02.08.10)
28. A terrifying take on Israeli security
I cannot believe I actually read this. The notion promoted here by Eyal Megged terrifies me. If you follow his logic through, we will continue to give up more and more until there is nothing left, or until we are so small that we can -- G-d forbid-- be taken out. Our security will come from strength, and Minister Lieberman is absolutely on the mark.
Arlene Kushner ,   Jerusalem Israel   (02.08.10)
29. megged shmegged
where did this guy come from and where does his reliable information come from? Assad is threatening war as part of a pact with Iran. Megged is misleading, and proposing what Chamberlain did with Germany - appeasement. Next, he forgets to mention the wars of "peace". Rabin's Oslo war; Barak's camp david war; and he mentions Olmert - but was the war in Lebanon becasue of the withdrawal or in spite of it? And howabout Olmert's gaza war? Withdrawal lead to missiles, to war. The only peace which did work after Oslo was with Jordan, and this did not involve surrender of territory, perhaps a few small fields. So why should anyone trust the judgement of those responsible for thousands of deaths of Israelis in the last 17 years? And why should anyone trust a dictator, who threatens war unless his demans are met, or war if Israel defends itself against Iran. Can such a dictator be a peace partner?
eddie ,   london UK   (02.08.10)
30. Megged.
Yeah. Israel knows the price. The price with Syria, is giving them a military advantage to destroy Israel. Areil Sharon told Assad to go to hell. So do I. Remember when Israel agreed to everything Yasser Arafat asked for? Arafat refused, and went home. When is it going to dawn on you lefty "journalists", that the only thing that will satisfy the muslim nations, is the destruction of Israel, and the death of all Jews? Endless words, castigation of Israel, and appeasement, may make you feel good about yourself, but your "peace" will never, ever come by those means.
