marcy ,   miami   (02.09.10)
no need to use fur, no need to sacrifice animals either, while we're at it.

While I agree with your point...in fact I think shtreimels should be the first thing to be banned, there's a matter of religious freedom that somewhat complicates the issue. In fact, we have the same problem in the U.S. where we're forced to accept certain practices because banning them would infringe on people's ability to practice their religion, and, apparently, the same thing holds true in Israel. But I think we should still applaud this important step that Israel has taken.
7. Good news for oned.
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.10.10)
How nice, good news for once. It is not just those fancy fur coats, it is also toy animals made with real fur of animals skinned alive or boiled alive. It is all those little dangling toys that the teens put on their hack packs without ever realizing the source and the cruelty.
8. Fur banning
Marilyn ,   USA   (02.10.10)
This is a positive step for Israel and for women. In the past, as women, there has been the image that we would do almost anything as long as it made us look a little more beautiful. In many cases we've just not know what was involved in some of this stuff. Little by little if we can get rid of some of the really unnecessary things.
9. All people should thank their skins that htye have some fur
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (02.10.10)
and a hide to protect them from the fatal environment we live in. A few more skins hung over our skin does a body good.It keeps you mighty warm in cold weather.

It may work as a barrier when a person uses, however there's lots of other things that we can use for this purpose that are not ethically challenging. Anyways when fur is on something that it was made for and attached to, there are a series of complex processes going on there. It is like people aren't going to be able to just put on a fur coat and somehow feel the same from it.
12. Excellent !!!
Sharon ,   Yavne   (02.10.10)
Israel is more human than many other countries who declare open mindedness & humanity- but slaughter thousands of animals - just for status symbols !
13. whats wrong with it
yoni ,   tel aviv   (02.11.10)
can someone please let me know whats wrong with fur? Its clearly not the killing of animals thats wrong since we kill animals for everything from food to couches and shoes and purses. Plus I think a vast majority of people understand that animals are permitted to be used by humans. Its a part of the food chain. Just like lions using the gazelles. I really dont get the issue at hand sorry
14. #13 What you described are survival issues
Global Citizen ,   Israel & USA   (02.11.10)
Does the shtreimel fall into that category? Some would say quite the opposite. If you can prove that the fur donor's meat went to feed a hungry family, then it's a step. But the facts say otherwise about the industry. Who eats mink? Do you?
15. The free market should decide not politicians
zionist forever   (02.13.10)
As long as the fur comes from a legitimate fur farm then it should be for the free market to decide whats sold not the politically correct politicians & any pressure groups. These animals are bred only for the fur trade same way chickens are bred to be slaughtered so they can end up on our dinner plate and nothing else. They might be used for different purposes but at the end of the day each animal is bred to later be killed to provide 1 purpose for humans. If this is all about morals of some kind then there is no difference between allowing the sale of a fur coat and a shtreimel? So allow all fur or ban all fur including the stuff used to make hats.
16. government decisions
Teresa ,   Bethesda, USA   (02.13.10)
Why should the government decide what one can wear or not wear. Should the government decide what are you thinking too? They already decide what you eat, what you drink, what are you allowed to tell your children - enough. Why would you want to be treated like a small child, without a mind of your own, and BIG DADDY will tell you what, how and when. Fur industry is such a good example - if you don't want to wear it, don't wear it. If you don't want to eat french fries - don't eat it. Just stop forcing the rest of us to remain children forever.
