Approximately 10 months ago, Al Jazeera Arabic interviewed a man in Damascus, Syria who was believed to be part of a cell that had kidnapped and killed two Israeli soldiers, Avi Sasportas and Ilan Sa'adon, in 1989. Al Jazeera has since learned that the man - who kept his face covered for the interview - was Mahmoud Abdul Raouf al-Mabhouh, a Hamas military commander who was killed in Dubai on January 20. Al-Mabhouh had been one of Israel's most wanted people for 20 years and was accused of being responsible for a number of operations, including the kidnapping and killing of the two soldiers. "Our work was well-planned, not random. We used to plan to kill first and then capture ones [soldiers] alive. If I was Mahmoud al-Mabhouh and I wanted to go underground starting by faking my own death, this is quite clever; find an expendable double and have a dozen mates with forged identity papers beat him to death in my hotel room in Dubai and then take me away to safety. If those forged identity papers can be made to look as if Mossad or the PA or my Hamas rivals or Fatah had a hand in obtaining them, so much better. I would wait for DNA confirmation of the identity of the deceased.

Just doesn't make sense for Mossad to kill a man they can track and compromise. Better to "bug" him, and all his contacts & associates... Now he will probably be replaced by someone unknown, and probably more efficient. Very likely he would not resign, and was killed by his own people, because they knew he was "leading" the Mossad into their inner circle.

I thought the incident happened much later than 1989. Could have been more than one. Israel is a fascinating country to which I am very attached but a very insecure and in some ways dangerous place.

After the revelation that "palestinians" are involved, it's more than likely they chose one of many Arab or Pro-"pal" sympathizing govt intelligence agencies or mercenaries for hire. That have a long standing history with foreign terrorist groups. This could easily be the work of ex-IRA or Russian mobsters. Either way, the involvement of "pals" makes this look more like an internal tribal feud and less like an Israeli operation. But everyone seems to love a good conspiracy theory, especially if reality is less exciting.
