1. Since Israel doesn't execute people, let it (it, not him!)
Anat, mother of Shai ,   slaughtered by it   (03.07.10)
remain in prison for the rest of its life, and hopefully in solitary confinement.
2. this guy should thank israel he is not dead
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (03.07.10)
so who cares if he rots in jail for the rest of his life? and who cares what he thinks?
3. death penalty needed - prime example
Leah ,   Yerushalayim Yisrael   (03.07.10)
Here's a prime example of why we need to legislate the death penalty in Israel for terrorist murderers. I don't understand why this is not on the table. If people like this were not still alive and enjoying our hospitality, Gilad Schalit may have been released by now. Convicted terrorist murderers would not be on the list of demands because they would no longer be alive. Of course, he can't be released, except from his body. It's hypocritical to have targetted assassinations and not to legislate and implement capital punishment for convicted terrorist murderers.
4. So what is the solution?
Salma ,   Palestine   (03.07.10)
If Hamas insists on the liberation of Abdullah Barghouti, and "Israel" refuses, does this mean that Shalit will remain a prisoner forever :(
5. Civilian court instead of military court?
Logic ,   Israel   (03.07.10)
This is something rotten in the system when the war criminal enemy is treated with the rights of a common criminal.
6. Salma , Palestine
Jerry   (03.07.10)
1000 murderers will remain in prison too not so bad
7. #4
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.07.10)
Eventually Israeli leaders will realize that the only way to release Shalit is to free more land from the Arab occupation. If Netanyahu declares that Israel builds another 1000 housing units for Jews in Judea and Samaria every day Shalit is prisoner Hamas will release Shalit after the first day.
8. Who permits him to speak with 67 life-sentences ?
Roland Seener ,   London England   (03.07.10)
9. Israel is a nation of hate
david ,   NY USA   (03.07.10)
since when was killing people the solution ? you kill to live?!! what a nation no pride, only united by war..blood and killing others
10. thank you, anat, no. 1, for sharing with us your experience,
margaret ,   london, on canada   (03.07.10)
although with little more than a hint. i do hope you can expand and by so doing finally shutting up the mouths of those who perceive terror as a theoretical matter that can be resolved while they sip coffee at a starbucks cafe or at a university debate in the uk. and such people still demand that we listen to them, while they attempt to silence those who have been affected the most by muslim terror, in israel and elsewhere.
11. He is just disappointed that ...
Daniel   (03.07.10)
... he will not be free so soon thanks to the exchange of prisoners.
12. To Salma,Palestine. The solution is not to free anybody..
Ari ,   Romania   (03.07.10)
Sorry for Schalit. This is a security matter. The same Barghoutti says, if he is free he would go back to fight. To continue the struggle. Even to throw the Jews out of Tel Aviv. That is to continue terrorism. One thing is to fight a battle and another to blow a Pizzeria. I don't know if you notice the difference Salma. I know most Palestinians condone terrorism by saying this is a fair strugle. To blow up a Military base can be consider part of the struggle but to blow a place filled with innocent people without a prior warning as Israel did in Gaza by sending fliers and calls to avoid civilian victims is something else. Besides Israel offered to free near 900 prisoners that would have gone already to their families, even risking security matters for Israel. Why doesn't Hamas accept it. It is better than 900 guys including some women rot in Jail than to free Schalit ? While Mashaal and all their leaders have a pleasent life in Damascus. They are a bunch of cowards that want to make the struggle by remote control. They don't even live in the Palestinian territories. And they are the ones deciding the lives of more than 900 palestininas and the Feedom of Schalit. Is this Fair? In my opinion 900 is better than nothing what you think Salma. Finally in any war in any place in the world soldiers risk their lives, this is part of the posibilities when at war. Shalit also was aware of this. The Shalits are entitle to wage their war to liberate their son. But weavewerd mothers and fathers of the Pizzeria's victims have also a piece of saying in this. Their relatives were not in uniform, they were just eating Pizza. Most of the 1000 prisoners have blood on their hands. That is the main problem, Salma, They are not white collar workers that avoid paying taxes or petit robers who stole a vehicle. They are murderers that wish to continue terrorism, they don't have regret in their hearts. Believe me Salma I would love to have peace with the Palestinians but not at any price. We lived in armony with them after 1967, until Yasser Arafat appear and screw everything up. Shalom, Salam
13. 4 - shalit isn't the only one who will stay in jail forever
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (03.07.10)
don't forget that your beloved terrorists will continue to rot away because of ONE minor jewish soldier. if it's worth it for your terrorist masters, it should be ok for you and them.
14. This Mass Murderer
Brod ,   USA   (03.07.10)
should be given the ultimate punishment. Why should he be given the opportunity to see daylight after all l the people he had murdered and would be killing should he have the opportunity?
15. Islamist justice: murder Jews and demand to be free
Roger ,   Paris, France   (03.07.10)
And not only murder them - man, woman, child and the elderly - only because they are Jewish; do so in mass, and the more the better. What a skewed state of mind!
16. Thanks, Margaret, for the invitation, but the experience is
Anat ,   Haderah, Israel   (03.07.10)
too painful. I simply want to say that no murderer, especially those who went out to murder children, should ever see the day of light. He doesn't deserve it.
17. Olmert should be sharing his Cell
Umm El Kul Naqba   (03.07.10)
Olmert is an anti-Israel Terrorist Support if he even considered releasing this unrepentent animal. With all due respect to Shalit, HOW CAN ANYONE JUSTIFY SHALIT'S RELEASE FOR 1000 MURDERING TERRORISTS, 66 MURDERED ISRAELIS AND A HUNDRED FUTURE DEAD ISRAELIs? Olmert should be judged, sentenced, and sent to prison to share a cell with Marboutti and learn what a depraved terrorist is and who he has released to return to murder more Israelis.
18. Good question my friend!!!
To Roland UK ,   Il   (03.07.10)
& Clear example
19. deceptive headline: he against Israel's very existence
Aaron Lerner ,   Raanana, Israel   (03.07.10)
The headline that he is against the "occupation" is deceptive, As the article notes, he opposes Israel everywhere.
20. exile him to DUBAI
(03.07.10)
21. Correction to previous post: Abdullah Barghouti
Umm El Kul Naqba   (03.07.10)
Correct name of the animal is Abdullah Barghouti
22. to Aaron 19
Aaron 19 ,   IL   (03.07.10)
What's new doc? Thats what they learn in their Koran- and what's engraved in their hearts and education for all of their lives... and oh! poor is the seldom spirit who raises a question cause he would b punished harshly or killed for daring putting in a spark of doubt in their lessons!
23. "Occupation", when translated into Arabic, is any non-Muslim
Eitan ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (03.07.10)
and non-Arab regime on any parcel of land between the River and the Sea. The implication of this definition of Muslim-Arabs to the concept is the elimination of the Jewish state of Israel and the denying of it any right to exist on any parcel of land between the River and the Sea. This, incidentally, is the reason for the refusal of ALL Muslim-Arab leaders to accept Israel's right to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people. And this refusal goes back to 1920, long before the "occupation".
24. to mike in Israel
Barney ,   USA   (03.07.10)
the thought of him "rotting away" in jail is justice. look at this guy. the picture of health, in fact, even a little overweight. too much good food and living in Israeli prisons. Poor Gilad was thin as a rail and very pale. this guy in contrast looks like he just got back from vacation. i say let them really rot as they are rotten.
25. 1
zionist forever   (03.07.10)
Legally the courts can execute murderers. Thanks to the leftist judges the only man ever executed was Eichaman and the only reason for that was because his crime and eventual punishment were known before the trial began. If a terrorist was tried in a civilian court then they should be considered a murderer same as any other and then executed that way there will be no releasing of dangerous men in prisoner exchanges or goodwill gestures. Yigel Amir who murdered 1 politician who has spent the past 14 years in solitary & 3 requests to be let out of solitary rejected these terrorists who have killed 66 civilians are all kept together and get regular visits from relatives and all kinds of other things that Amir doesn't get.. The system is screwed up
26. 25 - "1 politician" = democratically elected prime minister
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (03.07.10)
there is no higher political office in the state & murdering him is not as minor as you portray. it is treason against the state and is treated differently than the terrorist murders.
27. 26
zionist forever   (03.07.10)
mike Yigal Amir wanted to try stop a political process he believed was harmful to Israel. Murder is not the way your supposed to change political policy and I do not support what he did but he wasn't trying to kill innocents who were neither soldiers or politicians making the policies. He believed that kill Rabin and you kill oslo and he protects Israels interests. Barghouti murdered 66 civilians and his punishment is not as severe as a man who killed 1 politician. Neither had a right to do what they did but Amirs crime was not the same as Barghoutis but his punishment is much worse. Why has Amir been in solitary for 14 years whilst Barghouti has plenty of freedoms as far as possible in jail and he is a much more dangerous man than Amir.
28. 27 - your amir apologetics sound like what terrorists say
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (03.07.10)
terrorists use the exact same reasons/excuses for their actions. in that sense, amir and this terrorist have quite a bit in common. you are right that amir's punishment is not the same. in a democracy the sitting elected leader is unique and representative of the majority of the people. his life has more significance while in office, so to speak, representing and leading according to the people's will. not so when he is out of office. to murder the sitting democratically-elected leader is a crime against all of the citizens of the state, even he is merely a single life. his murder represents the antipathy of the basic values and essence of what this state is all about, hardly a more grave crime that can be committed. blame the army for not killing this terrorist on the spot. blame the security doctrine that has been established. blame the justice system for giving him amenities in prison. blame the governmental system for considering to release him. blame israeli society for being divided about the subject. heck, blame the old zionist leaders for making this country the way it is, unable to deal with situations like this by forbidding the death penalty. blame israeli voters for not wanting the death penalty enacted. get angry, that will help. maybe be glad there is no death penalty, especially since the terrorists would also have done the same to shalit by now. well, you may not be glad but there are a heck of a whole lot of israelis who disagree with you and are very glad. don't like it? get involved in the democratic process and get it changed.
